As someone from the US I think the uk has the perfect mix of all different kinds of weather

im not sure if it’s just me but I recently visited the uk and I was amazed at how the weather is just a mix of everything. It actually made me think that England is one of the best climates to live in, it obviously rains a lot and is cold but at the same time it’s very sunny a lot of the time and quite humid in my opinion. To me it’s not too hot or too cold it was just the right amount of everything. Does anyone else who lives/visited there think this too or am I insane???

I hate our UK weather! It’s crap!

cold and dark and wet winter which lasts for months. It makes me miserable. And then spring and summer often turns out to be a right let down. Where I am in the Uk it’s cold and has rained most of the week - you’d never think it was late May/June.

Im really envious of other countries with better climates eg Spain. I don’t think I’d ever get bored of the heat.

I don’t get people who whine about being “too hot”

glamourousindierockandroll · 01/06/2022 09:17

I completely agree. I love how the light changes through the year, the colours of the trees and how the gardens change. As PP said, the rain means lots of greenery which is lovely too.

BrioNotBiro · 01/06/2022 09:21

I think the unpredictability of UK weather - even within a single day- gives us a pragmatism so that we just crack on with things whatever.

I'm currently really struggling with my mental health and I think it's because of the weather. The worst part about living here is its unpredictability. I spend all winter waiting for summer (I love the sun) and then am never sure if it will come.
At least in other places you are guaranteed warm weather.

Last summer was pretty decent where I live (by the north's standards). This year it's been so crap and I just can't handle it. I am always checking the weather forecast and feeling really down - just when they forecast something I can deal with (18 degrees, it's all I ask!) they change it to cold again.

Yesterday was 12 degrees and raining. I got soaked walking home from work. All I want is to sit in the garden in a vest and shorts in some sunshine.

I would actually prefer really awful winters if I knew that the summers would be good. Instead we just get this half way house of year round greyness.

@garlictwist

totally agree

it’s shite

plus I get sick of wearing the same type of clothes. I want to wear sandals and no sleeve tops and not have to think about which jacket goes but can’t cos it’s too bloody cold!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2022 09:51

Try actually living in it, OP, and you'd probably change your mind!!

Yes, Texas can be a griddle; I stayed during a heat advisory, and commented one morning it was "a lot cooler today"; it was actually 95 degrees, which goes to show you can acclimatise to aything

There's always New England though - proper seasons, and a decent summer to lok forward to when the snow's piled up

Kris02 · 01/06/2022 09:56

I kind of agree. I don't mind the rain - not in the summer. In fact, I love the British climate from March to October. Right now (June 1st) we're having quite a lot of rain. Some people are complaining, but I'm loving it. We have a shower, then a spell of sun, then another shower. As a consequence, everything is vivid, rich green. I find it kind of beautiful when it rains in the summer

The problems begin in late October. From when the clocks change (I think it's around 20th October) to mid February can be hellishly grim. If we get a rainy, mild winter, uggh, it's dreadful. Christmas 2021, for example, was awful. From around the 15th of December to about the 10th of January we barely had any daylight. The sky was relentlessly low and black. It got light(ish) about eight in the morning and was dark by four in the afternoon. That's the downside to the UK. At times like that, I would give anything for the bright, open skies of Texas!

Still, I kind of like the British weather. People emigrate in search of the sun (many elderly people, for example, will retire to Spain), but I enjoy the variety. I also loathe the heat. If I could choose, I'd probably live in a perpetually cool but sunny English June. A cold, bright September is also gorgeous. Heaven, to me, is Cambridge on a cold, bright September morning, with the leaves just beginning to turn and the light glinting off the ancient buildings. First I'd have a coffee, then do some people watching, and then spend the day in the bookshops. Wonderful.

I love our weather! Four distinct and beautiful seasons to enjoy. Stuff grows abundantly. Snow! ⛄️

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/06/2022 10:04

If I could opt for anything I’d bump the degrees up by a couple and lower the grey

Love it, Marsha - now I've got visions of you sitting on a little cloud, twiddling knobs Grin

RosieRoww · 01/06/2022 10:09

I love how early the spring come every year.
How beautiful the autumn is.
How mild the winter could be( well sometime 😃)
But the only thing is the summer, I miss the hot days , there's usually few but not enough for me.😔

Thatswhyimacat · 01/06/2022 10:10

I love our weather. Recently it's rained a lot but it doesn't actually seem to rain much in London compared to other parts, which helps.

I just got back from holiday and honestly got sick of the oppressive heat and sun, constantly struggling to sleep, constantly sweaty and feeling unclean, having to put suncream on 24/7, never able to wear the clothes I want because they'll get sticky if I walk anywhere, makeup ruined in the evening, hair frizzing and curling everywhere. It's nice for a time but when it's constant it's boring and annoying.

JudgeJ · 01/06/2022 10:28

When we livedf in a hot country we really missed having seasons.

MassiveSalad22 · 01/06/2022 10:50

Yep it’s perfect! No real extremes. So lucky to live in the UK 🇬🇧

TabbyM · 01/06/2022 11:32

I am a peelly wally Scottish person so anything above 17 C is hot for me, and above 24 C is Too Hot as I burn, and everywhere is Too Hot because are buildings don't cope well in heat. I have lived in the central belt and eastern Scotland and there has been a shift in the weather since I was young - wetter warmer winters and summers hotter and wetter. Big difference between being on the coast at sea level (little frost but lots of wind/haar) and higher up inland (more frost/snow)

onlythreenow · 01/06/2022 11:37

I like our seasons, and I love the long nights in summer which comes with our latitude

If I could opt for anything I’d bump the degrees up by a couple and lower the grey

Come to New Zealand! We have seasons, long nights in summer, warmer temps and less grey (and rain)! At least we do in my part of the country.

KarenOLantern · 01/06/2022 12:09

HalloHello · 01/06/2022 09:12

I think the main thing is the unpredictability. We can't say oh let's have a BBQ on Sunday because even though the forecast is good, it can change so suddenly.

That's exactly it. And I think the unpredictability makes people feel like the weather is worse than it actually is. Because everyone has had their summer weekend plans ruined by rain at some point, it's easy to think "oh, it just rains all the time", when actually we do get plenty of sun and warmth, we just never know when it's going to happen!

Greenpurplepalm · 31/05/2022 20:22

10 months of the year grey and cloudy? That’s just not true though is it. Certainly not in the south east of England anyway.

I agree OP, I love our weather. When I have had visitors from abroad they are often surprised as it’s made out to be much much worse than it actually is!

The irony of this post, did you read my first sentence?!

I'm Central Scotland and we've had about 3 sunny days since last August. So yes, almost every other day has been grey, cloudy and cool. Unless it's been black, wet and bitter cold.

dillydally24 · 01/06/2022 13:12

I completely agree! I am British and love our temperate climate. It's almost never too hot or too cold plus the rain is good for gardening.

ThereWillBeSnacks · 01/06/2022 13:24

The weather in the UK would be absolutely perfect if only we could guarantee two things:

  • a full month of sunny, warm days so you can actually plan things to do outside
  • that our transport system would still function in the regular inch or two of snow we get most winters

Sorry but where in that first sentence does it say you’re in Scotland?

The first sentence says that the UK doesn't equal England (as OP had put UK in her title and England in OP, a mistake I'm sure many non-Brits make). Then you jumped on me to tell me that actually I was lying as SE England isn't grey and cloudy 10 months a year. So yes I was speaking from my own perspective but, once again, SE England =/= the whole UK.

It has also been a particularly rotten spring up here so I'm feeling very negative about our weather.

I was just pointing out that the whole of the UK isn’t cloudy ten months of the year. Anyway, I do get you. Here’s hoping for a better summer!

For the love of puppies, stop with the all-inclusive quotes!

And get a room.

I live in Scotland. The weather here is pish. 12 degrees today and it’s the last day of May.
The weather in the south of England is usually 3/4/5 degrees warmer than here and that would make a such a difference in terms of heat and feeling like we don’t just have Autumn for 10 months of the year.

Yes, I can concur with that and it's why I live in the south of England. Love Scotland and lived there for three years. At that point, I scuttled back south with gladness in my heart.
