To not wake him in the night?

Napnapnap · 31/05/2022 14:29

My son is 18 months old and for the past few weeks his nappies have been over filling during the night and leaking onto his pyjamas and bedding. Wee, not poo.

He likes to drink a lot during the day so we've cut this back around bed time but it's not making much difference. I think the main issue is he sleeps on his front so the back of his nappy is bone dry and it's all going into the front / leaking out of the top. I'm washing his pyjamas and bedding every day at the moment!

I've tried different sizes and it doesn't seem to matter. We used supermarket own brand at the moment but have tried more expensive like pampers and tbh I found them even shitter.
Going to get some pull up ones instead today to see if they are any better.

Anyway, I do don't want to start waking him up to change him through the night, he's been sleeping through for months now like an absolute trooper 7:30pm - 7am and I don't want to ruin it by waking him but also feel bad that he's waking up damp all the time.

help!

Pull ups make the world of difference - make the switch to nappy pants, you'll probably find it stops.

Beees · 31/05/2022 14:32

Can't you change him without waking him? Keep the door ajar with the landing light on so you can see but it's not too bright and once changed out him back in bed. He might stir but he shouldn't necessarily wake up.

BuffaloCauliflower · 31/05/2022 14:33

Try nappy pants and maybe the size up too. My 18mo (75th centile, still breastfeeds through the night and sleeps on his front) wears Fred and Flo size 5 nappy pants and never had a leak

SummerHouse · 31/05/2022 14:35

Could you put the nappy on so it's lower at the back and higher at the front? I don't think pull ups will be better. Just how much is he drinking? Is it like a worrying amount? Has he always drank a lot or is it recent?

qpmz · 31/05/2022 14:39

If he's sleeping through regardless, it means it doesn't bother him that he's wet. Therefore if you can cope with the extra laundry I wouldn't do anything different. I wouldn't change him in the middle of the night that's for sure!

Oh my no, this would never work. He wakes at the sound of a nats fart 🤣

He's always drank a lot, he just likes to have a drink. I have thought before of maybe checking with the Dr/ HV. It's not a worrying amount but he always has access to his water bottle. We've started taking it away around tea time now and just has a small milk when he goes to bed.

To be fair my DS is the same 95% of the time but if you catch them in deep rem sleep it's amazing what you can manage to do. Although word of warning if you do try my DS tries very hard to roll back onto his front mid nappy change.

No it doesn't seem to bother him at all

My DC did this & I used the extra absorbent one of the size they used so 5plus and it mainly solved the issue.

But no way would I wake them, we all need sleep!

My child see does most of their pooing in their sleep despite being day time toilet trained so I do pop in and change (if necessary) when I’m on my way to bed but they are 3 and go straight back to sleep (if they even wake!).

I'd be really worried about trying, he's hard to get back to sleep once he's woken. I tuck him in when I go to bed around 10/10:30 and he stirs then and I have to leg it out the room ha!

Another one saying don't do anything. If he's happy sleeping, then leave him to it. Does he move a lot in his sleep? If not, you could put him on an incontinence pad, to safe on having to clean the sheets every morning. I'm talking about the bed pads they do for elderly people. They're cheap and very helpful for little ones, and you can just throw it away in the morning (granted not great for the environment, but neither is daily washing!)

TheHomeContact · 31/05/2022 14:58

I've heard parents of boys mention pointing their penis down before securing the nappy. Could this help?

My eldest was a heavy wetter. And also slept through it. Couldn't pin point at what point the leaking was occuring, so put Boots plastic pants over the top of the nappy, or put extra boosters in the washables.

Windy999 · 31/05/2022 14:59

I had smile with my son (although he was slightly younger) He too was a front sleeper.
Two nappies stopped our issues - first one right way round sitting slightly lower than usual, second one back to front.

Windy999 · 31/05/2022 15:00

*the same!! Not smile!

linerforlife · 31/05/2022 15:03

Use a nappy liner in the front of the nappy? It'll help.

KeyWorker · 31/05/2022 15:22

Nappy pants fit much better at this age and are different to the ‘pull ups’ of the past. Also, try a different brand. Don’t restrict his fluids. You could also try boosting your disposable nappy’s with a cloth booster like the bambino mio boosters or Aldi had their own version recently. I know it’s extra washing but better than a whole bedding set daily.

AperolWhore · 31/05/2022 15:26

Two pampers nappies on top on each other will stop this, works every single time!

anxiousatnight · 31/05/2022 15:32

DS1 went through a stage of this and even pull ups/nappy pants didn't contain it. I also tried a reusable nappy liner inside a nappy/pull up, which didn't work either.

What did work was a normal nappy with a larger pull up over it. He didn't seem to notice the extra layers (wasn't uncomfortable, no rash etc) and he stayed dry. Not very good for the environment I grant you, but neither was all the extra washing and it didn't last forever.

PossiblyPertunia · 31/05/2022 15:38

My son leaks through every night too so we layer 2 nappies (pull ups) over night and that stops leaks 99% of the time.

caringcarer · 31/05/2022 15:41

Off solution but stick a tena lady pad down front of his nappy to take some of overspill. It works.

Crocky · 31/05/2022 15:49

Have a look at pampers dry nites bed mats. Not a cheap option but may give you some peace of mind.

Mabelface · 31/05/2022 15:58

Definitely make sure he's pointing down so the wee hits the nappy instead of leaking over the top.

this! Let him sleep, and let yourself sleep. You’ll be a better mum in the day if you have unbroken sleep than if you don’t.

But lots of good suggestions about ways to stop the wee leaking through - Tena lady down the front , two nappies, try pull ups etc all sound worth a go

That's what we did with one of our boys. The top nappy was next size up too, he was bone dry in the morning.
