To think I am within normal range?

So I earn about £25k in the manchester area (feel this is quite standard) everybody on mumsnet seems to earn like 50k or more…most of my friends actually earn less than me so it can’t be just us?

or is everybody on mumsnet rich?

Either everyone on MN is rich, with huge pots of savings, or some people on MN are lying 🤔

Monkeybusiness9 · 31/05/2022 12:28

Never thought of that 😂😂😂

Think it depends on your age but I think you’re within normal range.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 31/05/2022 12:39

£25 k in Manchester is probably equivilent of £50k in the south east due to housing costs.

User487216 · 31/05/2022 12:44

I'm recently retired now but if I was still working that would be my earnings, I live in Northamptonshire.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/05/2022 12:45

There are loads of these threads. Stop comparing yourself. I'm on minimum wage, I'm not bothered what other people on MN earn.

Monkeybusiness9 · 31/05/2022 15:02

@Waxonwaxoff0 thank you x

Most people on MN seem to live on another planet, where everyone is on 100k, has pots of savings and great pensions. And even with all of this, they still consider themselves to be scraping by.

Meanwhile in the real world 90% of the country earns bout 30k.

richardhammondsgoatee · 31/05/2022 15:09

It also depends on your age and what you do. Location wise I would earn the sane in Manchester as I do in Hampshire but most wouldn't. But I've also been doing my job for 20 years and I'm at the top of the payscale. (Although still under £50,000)

AnnaSW1 · 31/05/2022 15:28

It depends on age too.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 31/05/2022 15:33

Most people are very poor by mumsnet standards.

I earn about £21k as I’m still training. When newly qualified it’ll be around £28-30k which I’m quite happy with. DH earns just under £40k which is a really good wage for our area.

on mumsnet we are paupers.

ForestFae · 31/05/2022 15:37

Depends on age and location, but I’d say that’s a pretty normal salary.

altiara · 31/05/2022 15:40

Depends on the thread though. I’ve seen lots of threads where people think 25k is loads and on other threads it’s not.

dottiedodah · 31/05/2022 15:41

I think Mumsnet has a fairly high proportion of people in the SE ,who are MC and professional .TBH it depends where you live , and what your OG are.In Manchester 25k is a reasonable sum. If rent and cost of living is compared to London you are about the same level of Income

SofiaSoFar · 31/05/2022 15:53

I live on the other side of the Pennines to you (not a million miles away from you) and there are few jobs which pay much more than £25k locally but plenty which pay less, from what I see and know of, so I expect you're doing just fine compared to the average.

I've been at both ends of the pay scale myself and am lucky to have done very well for the last 15-20 years, but it's definitely not the norm up here.

Also remember that there are quite a few places where you could by a 3 bed house for 2x your salary. There are other places where 10x your salary wouldn't buy a 1 bed flat.

So when you're comparing yourself to someone earning twice as much but in London/Southeast they're probably not much, if at all, better off really.

(Oh, and as someone already pointed out, don't assume everyone is being honest on here!)

The wealthy people just stand out and keep adding to the threads about money

ColourMeExhausted · 31/05/2022 16:09

Ha this is a good thread! I earn in the mid 30ks, and every time I log on here I feel massively inadequate. I used to earn more but took a pay cut for what was meant to be a temporary job, which I loved so much that I've stayed through two DC and mat leaves! But getting dissatisfied now and seeking better paid positions as I believe I am underpaid for what I do. DH better paid and we have a comfortable lifestyle with savings (for now!). So there's not a huge need for more money, but when I read threads like the recent one about the poster earjing 65k and not feeling it was enough, I feel like a total loser! Good to get some perspective and remember that I love my job (until recently) and it's given many benefits including flexibility with childcare and strong friendships.

I'm in Scotland if that's useful to know?

Sorry for typos, I have a broken hand and Covid...

Maybe 20 years ago 😂 or you want to live in a shit hole.

ColourMeExhausted · 31/05/2022 16:12

Also, I don't believe that many people are lying. Just check out the threads about school and education to see the amount of posters for whom private education is an option, even with multiple DC. That screams money to burn to me...

Fenella123 · 31/05/2022 16:32

Depends a lot on where you are. Like, a LOT a lot a lot. House prices in Grimsby are half what they are round my way, but double that again for bits of London.

Have a think about where your career might go - who was doing your job 10-20 years ago ... what are they doing and earning now? How does that stack up against local house prices? How is their work/life balance - do they have a huge commute? Do they have cleaners and nannies because they're never home?

Then bear in mind that a lot of the "work insane hours to get on in career, build up pension, then retire to somewhere cheaper in the country" types will have to go to London to maximize their earning.

You may well have a good a lifestyle as someone earning twice as much in London.

I don't think anyone wants to live in a shit hole. It's how the cookie crumbles.
