So, I am getting really bored with my mundane office job, would really like a change. I don’t know why but I would really like to work with recovering drug addicts? This area is of such an interest to me I love seeing people turn their life around and would like to be there to help them.

does anybody work in this field and how did you get there?

My best friends husband does this. He needed a social work degree. He's not technically a social worker though. He's a support worker/manager of a halfway house-type set up that supports people recovering from drug addictions, or just released from the large mental health hospital we have in town.
It's not very well paid though, and he works on shifts, but always seems to have a fair amount of time off. My friend, who is a pharmacist, is the main breadwinner.

You can get in to lower level positions quite easily. Start of with 3-4 months of being a carer then apply if you've no other relevant experience.

If you want to be able to go further up, you may well need a related degree or masters- if you have a degree then a social work Masters is probably the most useful option and then lots of options if you find the work becomes frustrating for you.

Look on charity jobs.com for the actual jobs- occasionally NHS or local council as well.
