To ask your experience of the copper coil..?

Posting here for traffic. Hope that's ok.
Due to get copper coil fitted today as the mirena made me bleed constantly and most hormonal contraception I've tried either made me moody or gain weight.
I've scared myself reading horror stories of heavy periods and pregnancy though so I'm considering cancelling the app.
Anyone got any experiences with it on here, good or bad? Thank you.

I have a copper coil and love it. I didn’t respond well to to mirena so had that removed and a copper one inserted. My periods are actually lighter with the copper coil than they were without any contraception. No pregnancy here either:)

I've had one for a few years now, regular, pretty light periods. No pain. No baby. All good for me.

emmylousings · 31/05/2022 09:01

I had heavy bleeding with mirena, but the copper coil was fine. The best thing is just give it a go, once you find the right one, coils are great. Good luck today.

I wish I'd had one years ago. I don't mix well with hormonal contraception and for me this was a game changer.

Theuserwithnoname · 31/05/2022 09:13

No complaints here. Always feel period coming on with a bit of minor cramping whereas I didn't before but it's good to get the warning. Definitely a bit heavier and last longer than without but completely manageable and definitely preferable to the miserable and unpredictable time I had with the implant.

Definitelynotem · 31/05/2022 09:31

Sorry to be the negative one but I hated my copper coil! I usually have normal periods and it made me have longer, very heavy periods and it was so painful - both getting it in and at that time of the month. Maybe if you already have heavy periods though it works differently, good luck either way!

ofwarren · 31/05/2022 09:34

I hated it
Made me have even heavier, more painful periods and ended up with an infection and had to have it removed.

yikesanotherbooboo · 31/05/2022 09:42

I had one for about 25 years with3 children in between.
It suited me very well.
Periods were probably a little heavier than they would have been without it but not in anyway a nuisance.

NoSquirrels · 31/05/2022 09:45

Totally pain-free and baby-free for me, fitted after DC2. Hate hormonal contraception and this has been brilliant. Barely think about it.

Workinghardeveryday · 31/05/2022 09:50

My mate had one and she went from having regular light periods to flooding.

I remember she went out for a meal with family, not even due on. She flooded out of nowhere and had white jeans on. Her mum had to wrap her coat around her so she could stand up and leave. Blood on chair and everything…

JoJo36 · 31/05/2022 09:52

Brilliant experience here for over 10 years. I’m quite sensitive to hormones so wanted a hormone free one.

cumulonimbus523 · 31/05/2022 10:03

I really, really wish it had worked out well for me because any type of hormonal BC makes me very ill. Getting it fitted was fine, periods were more heavy and painful for first couple of days but apart from that pretty normal. Pre-coil I only had 3-4 days of bleeding so a slight extension to 5-7 days was tolerable. Main horrible side effect was intense, stabbing cramps in luteal phase which came out of nowhere and seemingly had no cause (got it checked out at clinic). Unfortunately I ended up getting pregnant and had an early miscarriage (before I realised I was even pregnant, wasn't tracking as cycles were long and weird over lockdown) so it was taken out at the EPU. Just being honest, as I said I wish it had worked for me because I genuinely would have put up with the heavier periods, just the intermittent cramping I couldn't cope with.

GregBrawlsInDogJail · 31/05/2022 10:05

I've had 4 - pre, between, and post kids. Insertion easy, periods fine, no hormones, totally reliable, loved it. I'd still be using one if DH hadn't had the snip now.

OwlinaTree · 31/05/2022 10:07

I have had one, heavier periods especially for the first year. After that it was fine. It fell out after about 5 years though!

brokengoalposts · 31/05/2022 10:07

I hated mine. Made my already heavy periods much heavier and big clots. Had it removed and a mirena put in, love it.

Bloomingdelightful · 31/05/2022 10:08

I had one, it went horribly wrong and I had a hysterectomy

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 31/05/2022 10:43

I had years of lumbar pain with mine. I assumed it was a bad back and had chiropractic treatment, physiotherapy, pain relief, pilates exercises etc. I then had it removed as its time was up and the lumbar pain went overnight. I couldn't believe it. Years of pain just gone. I wish I'd never had it fitted. It also made me have bloating and a heavy dragging sensation in the pelvis.

LaFloristaCalista · 31/05/2022 12:38

I hated it. I had years of thrush infections after I had it fitted, and my thyroid packed up (this could be coincidental). The thrush disappeared the month I had it removed and it never came back

ButteryNuts · 31/05/2022 12:45

I got it fitted a few months ago.

My periods have become heavier and with worse cramping than I experienced before, especially the first one after it being fitted, but 3 periods later it's improved. Have to be more on the ball with changing tampons / pads, but not going to leak through too quickly if that makes sense. And the cramps are just a mild niggle now. I assume it will continue getting better.

I didn't have particularly long/heavy periods or severe cramps to begin with though.

No emotional or hormonal changes obviously which I'm grateful for and wanted to avoid.
