Expensive houses with all the bedrooms in the eves

This is my pet hate, when cruising on Rightmove ( other for property listings available. ) It seems that's the million pound plus properties that I certainly cannot afford all seem to have bedrooms with the ceilings cutting in. I mean your paying the money for half the room. I don't want to only be able to stand up in the Centre of my million pound bedroom or hit my bed when I sit up in bed.

I like them, they give the room character. But then I’d rather live in a cottage in the woods that feels like something out of a children’s book, so that’s just me.

Thankfully I live in a shit hole so all rooms are a decent size and the mortgage is cheaper than the average car rental scheme Grin

My mum has just moved into a house like this. It's not my personal taste, but you can definitely stand up in all rooms.

🙄OP was not moaning. Just making a general observation.

DysmalRadius · 31/05/2022 00:28

Millionaires are all under 4 foot 3 though, so they don't have the same requirements for head's pace in their bedrooms as paupers (or 'moneyless giants' as they call them).

PrinnyPree · 31/05/2022 00:30

Yeah I was having a browse and noticed the same with million quid new builds (I'm the same at looking at houses I couldn't afford without a lottery win) they always have loads of ensuites too and small overlooked gardens. They are technically detached but by about a wheelie bins width. In my minds eye I always imagine million pound houses to be 3000sqft (not including the loft) half an acre of mature garden and a seperate big double brick built garage and electric gate to the turn around drive.

BlackberrySky · 31/05/2022 02:16

I prefer a set up where there is a master bedroom/bathroom on the floor below, and don't think I would buy a property that didn't have this. On a separate note though, £1 million pounds is what you pay for a run of the mill four bedroom terrace/semi round my way, so those houses wouldn't be luxurious etc, as in, they would come with compromises. For me though, all eaves bedrooms would be a compromise too far!

cherrymax · 31/05/2022 04:45

I rented a top floor flat and it was honestly a nightmare trying to furnish it because the ceilings were so low. I couldn't even have a wardrobe.
I wouldn't live in a flat/house without full height rooms again. Any loft conversation would need a very generous loft space.

OP isn't moaning about HER house, just looking on rightmove at houses she has already said she can't afford and is making an observation.

Jesus, is it privileged to just look at the massively expensive houses now and have an opinion on them?

I love looking at the max price houses on rightmove OP! Fantasy shopping eh? 😁

DSGR · 31/05/2022 06:44

I love bedrooms in the eaves… cosy and lovely. Each to their own!

NewHouseNewMe · 31/05/2022 06:59

My loft builder commented that when people want to keep spaces lower than 1.2m, they think they are adding space but in fact that space isn’t usable. Far better to cut it off 1.3m and add storage space in the eves, and saves on carpet and decorating.

People who live in such houses will make sure that the bedroos in the eaves will be occupied by staff, so no danger of you hitting your head

NewHouseNewMe · 31/05/2022 07:12

Million pound houses are semis in much of London and the South East so definitely not “people with staff” territory!

camelfinger · 31/05/2022 07:15

I assume it would be done in a new build to save money, and in an older property to maximise the space. If it’s on the top floor then surely all space will be compromised to an extent because of the roof line? I think just as long as you can get out of bed and walk to the door or wardrobe without banging your head, that’s ok. High ceilings look nice and definitely feel nicer but I do get that every inch of space needs to be used nowadays.

MissyB1 · 31/05/2022 07:19

I agree. Some people might think it looks cute but how do you fit a wardrobe in?

Same! Also my childhood bedroom was in the attic and sloping ceilings and beams give me that instant-hit nostalgia. Had I millions of pounds I’d go straight for something crumbling and impossible to maintain, with bats in the belfry and ceilings to knock my head on.

hattie43 · 31/05/2022 07:30

I hate eves .

A work colleague has had a massive extension done and every room upstairs has huge eves . Half of the rooms are unusable and the eves close the walls in . Very claustrophobic and darkening .

This .

A million doesn't buy an awful lot of house in the SE anymore.

SafelySoftly · 31/05/2022 07:42

A million pound house probably buys you a terrace in much of London so of course you get loft bedrooms. Jealous OP..?

Dashdotdotdash · 31/05/2022 07:51

I never really understand this when I see this type of house (not necessarily expensive) on programmes like Escape to the Country. It would be such a pain having to be careful about getting out of bed in case you bang your head, some of them look like you'd struggle even to sit up in bed.

SquirrelFan · 31/05/2022 08:04

@DysmalRadius 😂

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 08:22

I don't mind converted attics in houses but it annoys the hell out of me when I see houses listed as eg 4 bed bungalow when one or more bedrooms are attic conversions and therefore no longer a bungalow as there are rooms only accessible by stairs.

godmum56 · 31/05/2022 08:23

oh PS they are "eaves"

Ferngreen · 31/05/2022 08:27

They would be very hot in summer as no loft above to store the heat
