To be shocked I’m going grey/white at 33!

It’s been steadily building up over the past year or two, since I had my son ironically.
I look back at photos of me before I had him and I didn’t have this.
The main issue is wiry white hairs growing up on the top of my head, sticking up everywhere and looking awful.
But as I looked closer I realised I actually had white/grey in my hair now.
I am naturally blonde so they’re not REALLY obvious, but they are to me 😣

Most of my family members didn’t go grey/white until much later so I don’t know what’s happened with me.

@Namechangenye2021 If it’s any consolation, my grey has absolutely no correlation with my fertility.

dkedm15 · 30/05/2022 22:05

I'm 30 this year and currently pregnant with my first and I've lost count of how many white hairs I'm finding! (Completely skipped the grey stage and fully fledged white hairs 🥴) x

Blossomtoes · 30/05/2022 22:06

I found my first grey hair when I was 16. My brother was 50% grey at 21.

SoManyQuestionsHere · 30/05/2022 22:08

@ForestFae, we don't ... it's just contrast!

See my first post: I have but one or two greys at age 40. But because I'm so dark that it's almost black, they show.

My other colleague is a stereotypically North German light blond. He's pushing 25% grey at 45, but nobody can tell unless they look closely. There's just not much of a visual difference between "light blond" and "white".

I don’t think that’s young — I have noticed that every woman in my friend group is now quite grey, with the exception of me. I am 34 with very dark hair. My friends are 30-36, hair of all colours, all of them with visible white and grey and some of them very much so. It made me wonder if actually it’s always been common and normal for people to be quite grey by mid thirties, but pre-pandemic everyone dyed their hair and now a lot of people don’t.

I’ve only ever found the very occasional white hair myself, and only in the past year or so. My mum at 63 is still only a tiny bit grey — as in the occasional strand — and my dad went a bit grey around his temples aged maybe 40 and then it just never progressed. He has jet black hair and my mum very dark brown like mine. So it’s just genetics but you’re not unusual, OP.

My son has a few grey hairs.
He’s 15

MountainClimber22 · 30/05/2022 22:22

Lucky you! I started going grey at 17 and my son has had a small grey patch since primary school.

Simonjt · 30/05/2022 22:25

I’m 34 and wish I was only going grey, I’ve gone grey really quickly, I look like a B&M version of Tan France.

Greenhippoblue · 30/05/2022 22:33

@IloveStrawberrylaces a combination of the brush on/spray on wash out things, the Clairol root dye kits and gritting my teeth til my next appointment! I try and eek it out to every 6 weeks doing that.

Ohbother · 30/05/2022 22:34

Definitely genetics. I have dark brown hair, my dad and his brothers/dad had black hair. All of then started going grey in late 40s, my dad was probs 65% grey when he passed in his late 70s. I'm mid 40s and noticed my first grey in late 30s. Now I have maybe .005% grey - literally the odd one here and there. DH has been going grey since his 20s and now is as grey as my dad was in his 70s 🤷‍♀️

Change123today · 30/05/2022 22:44

Genetics my Mum being dyed her hair in her 30’s and I never realised why…until I found my first grey at 30 …I’m now mid 40’s with quite a lot of grey.

My husband in his late 40’s is pretty much grey/white he had black hair when I met him!!

least my girls know what is likely to happen!!!

Tokyopirate · 30/05/2022 23:03

I got my first greys at 20, I blame my poor mental health and a stressful life haha. Now I've just turned 30 and I'm noticing them a lot more and they're far more stubborn to dye. I know quite a few people in their 30's that have embraced the grey and have almost completely grey hair now. My Mum is in her late 50's and has only just started getting properly grey at the front, I honestly think it's just luck of the draw!

D0lphine · 31/05/2022 00:03

Just genetics.

A few of my mates have gone grey; others have fought it. Depends what you're happiest with!

VeryQuaintIrene · 31/05/2022 00:07

It can look wonderful, though. My partner (very dark brown apparently, though I didn't know her then) started greying in her early 20s and has ended up with hair so lovely and striking that complete strangers admire it in the street.

Maymaymay · 31/05/2022 00:25

Don't pull them out ! Those are the ones that go wiry. 33 is normal I got my first gray at 19 😬
