AIBU to not know when to do LFTs now.

AIBU to not know when to do LFTs now. I should preface with I have anxiety and OCD and I worry a lot about accidentally passing Covid onto someone vulnerable.

I have 2 children, one at school and one at nursery. I mainly work from home, visit the office very occasionally. My husband commutes 3 times a week.

From when LFTs first became available until April 22, we were testing twice a week and coinciding the timing so that we tested just before seeing family or friends, especially older relatives.

Now I don’t know what is expected. I know what the guidance says but I want to gauge what the average person does. Generally we are testing now if any of us have any symptoms, if I go into the office, if we are seeing older family members or socialising with a group of friends inside. But not the default regularity of twice a week i.e. sometimes I might not need to test for a week-10 days.
I feel that maybe isn’t sustainable in the long run, not just financially (although I can and would pay for tests if I thought it was the right thing to do), but also environmentally and when does it end if we are to ‘live with Covid’?

So please can I ask what others do now?

My dad tests before he sees my mum or me (it's done at the care home)
My partner tests before he sees me as do any friends
I don't tend to test as I don't go anywhere Grin owing to being CEV

Topgub · 30/05/2022 17:26

Exactly @ludocris

SproutsRUs · 30/05/2022 17:27

Can't speak for everyone but no one I know is testing anymore.

ICanSmellSummerComing · 30/05/2022 17:32

When I feel strange or unwell

Summersdreaming · 30/05/2022 18:13

Never. We last had covid at Christmas, I think isolating stopped soon after that? But the last time for me was Christmas. No plans to ever do another.

comealongponds · 30/05/2022 18:21

The only ones I’ve done in the last few months are to go see my mum (vulnerable and very worried about covid still) and when I had symptoms. I’m in a part of the UK where you can still get free LFTs if you have symptoms.

emmathedilemma · 30/05/2022 18:40

i tested this morning because I didn’t feel well and I’d probably do one before staying with my parents as my dad is CV and neither of them have already had it, but other than that I’m not bothering now

@pixie5121 @ilovesooty the OP started by saying she has anxiety and OCD so I hardly think @Topgub was asking an unreasonable question....

Fair enough. I apologise.

I suppose I've been getting a bit tired of people leaping straight to this question but in this case I concede my reaction to @Topgub was unfair.

Picklerick42 · 30/05/2022 18:50

I rarely did them.

The DC had to do them at school when someone in their class had it and we did them as a family for a week when DS1 caught it. None of us had a positive test, despite DS2 and DH both having the exact same symptoms as DS1. After that I had no confidence in their accuracy.

If I felt unwell I just didn't go to see people. Same as I have always done and always will do.

Oblomov22 · 30/05/2022 18:51

Eh? Why would you, now?

BuwchGochGota · 30/05/2022 18:54

I'm testing if I have symptoms.

DS2 had Covid about a fortnight ago and we did a few extra tests around that time (we all have hayfever so there was a lot of is this high pollen count or covid questions in our minds).

I'm in Wales, where you can still get free LFTs if you have symptoms.

PollyDarton1 · 30/05/2022 19:00

I had it in April and haven't tested since, but I WFH, don't visit anyone who is vulnerable and haven't had any symptoms since. In fact, I'm not sure I even have any LFT left Blush

SherlockTomes · 30/05/2022 19:01

We don't test at all now.

Shepandawing · 30/05/2022 19:04

We dont test anymore

Hbh17 · 30/05/2022 19:05

The answer is "never" - and many of us have never done one (ie not in a job where it was a requirement).

Whatsonmymindgrapes · 30/05/2022 19:10

I never test..

megletthesecond · 30/05/2022 19:12

We've not had any symptoms.
I test once a week and also before we stay with family. I stockpiled tests so can keep at it for a while yet.

LittleBearPad · 30/05/2022 19:20

Never

Wizzbangfizz · 30/05/2022 19:24

I’ve no intention of ever testing for covid again unless absolutely forced to (travel for example). Waste of time.

miltonj · 30/05/2022 19:27

Not at all. But if my grandma asked me to do one I would!

catskillsdogskills · 30/05/2022 19:32

I'm still supposed to do them for work, but don't. Barely did them when the pandemic was on and I worked in a school, would take one if I had symptoms.

You sound absolutely bonkers to me but then I didn't sit out the pandemic working from home.

ludocris · 30/05/2022 19:39

@ilovesooty 👍🏻👍🏻

PerrinAybara · 30/05/2022 19:48

When I have symptoms (and last time I had symptoms it actually was covid) and before visiting my very poorly DM in hospital.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 30/05/2022 19:49

The only time I've tested was when I felt like I may have symptoms. A few weeks back both DH and I had a cough, we tested for three days and the were all negative so we stopped after that. The time before was because a friend in the group who we had been out for dinner with had tested positive (for work, but no symptoms at all) but again, we did it on day 1 and day 3 and negative.

This weekend DC has had a really sore throat and cough, they actively asked me to test them as they are meant to be meeting friends to do a photo shoot for some media studies homework and one friend has health issues, but we've done 3 now and all negative (they cancelled meeting though as too rough).

It's impossible to know really if we need to or not. I guess if you work in some industries you should. I'm half convinced DC has it but it's so minor now due to vaccines that it's not shedding enough to make a test positive.

We all have to get on with it as much as possible as we do with every other illness.

Throwaway32 · 30/05/2022 19:57

Pretty sure I have it now tbh. Someone in my immediate family who I've seen recently has done a positive lateral flow today, I have a dry cough although not continuous and feel a bit sniffley.

But I'm not testing, and I'll be going about my business as usual because you know what? I simply can't afford not to.

My kids have to eat, my home needs heating, I'm self employed and if I stay home every time I have mild symptoms of a viral illness I'd go under very quickly.

Call me selfish I'm past caring, I don't have a choice if I want to keep a roof over my children's heads and food in their tummies 🤷‍♀️
