My little boy was having a tantrum went to chuck himself down (he was kneeling) and hit his head on the corner of the wall!

He seemed fine afterwards cried for a minute or two but this egg came up straight away, he's fallen asleep on the sofa now its been about 40 minutes since he hit it

Is it ok to let him sleep? He wakes up when I try and put a cold pack on it...

What age and would he normally be napping now? I'd be concerned about concussion personally. Might be worth ringing 111 for advice

Throckmorton · 29/05/2022 14:35

If sleeping at this time of day is unusual for him I would be going straight to A&E. At the minimum I would call 111 right now for advice

almostsinglemum · 29/05/2022 14:36

I'd also be ringing for advice. Bless him that must have really hurt!

Aprilx · 29/05/2022 14:37

I would also be ringing if not heading to A&E right now.

Similar to an injury DD had when little - I took her to paediatric a&e to get her checked over, rightly or wrongly but unusual sleepiness may be a sign of concussion, similarly if he is sick at any point.

I was always taught to keep them after a head injury- although a sleep could be entirely normal for them, there's no way to distinguish normal sleep from a 'head injury sleep'

cottagegardenflower · 29/05/2022 15:05

Kids of this age who have had a nasty shock like banging their head, often sleep so it's difficult to tell if it's concussion or not. Don't leave him longer than 15 minutes, then wake him up and assess him then. Good luck keeping an ice pack on, I don't think he would tolerate it and it would be even more painful. Give some calpol (it doesn't disguise a head injury, contrary to popular belief) and see if he plays normally. If he's still 'unusually' sleepy, vomits, disorientated or you are worried his behaviour isnt normal, take him to A&E. Def call 111 as I'm not sure if the advice is still to check 2 hourly overnight. That means wake them up! The bump looks scary but it will go down and form a bruise soon. If you're concerned take him to a&e, they won't mind but all they'll do is check his pupils, and give you a head injury leaflet, but it is reassuring.

Thanks everyone I appreciate the replies!

I left him to sleep and every time I tried to put the ice pack on he woke up! Hes running round again like nothing happened and the bump has gone down.

Iv dealt with head injuries in the past with DD but never an egg like that Blush

My son had an egg like that after a head injury and A&E gave us a leaflet like this about things to watch out for: www.ouh.nhs.uk/patient-guide/leaflets/files/36865Phead.pdf
