Dog using grass verge?

namechanger0002 · 29/05/2022 13:43

Sorry for the terrible title. Obviously name changed.

I'd just mown and strimmed the grass verges in front of my house and was in process of sweeping. I stopped sweeping temporarily as people approached on the path so they could get past. One woman and her dog left the path and started walking directly over one of the verges. She then let the dog stop and use the grass as a loo, it was crouched and she waited, she had a waste bag ready in her hand, but didn't need to use that.

I didn't say anything but I thought it was inappropriate and rude. I'd clearly just mowed it and now there will be a patch where the dog used it. I know I don't own the verge but I maintain it (the local authority only does them once every few months and not well). I'm not a dog owner and wondered if this was normal and I'm being unreasonable.

The storm drain thing is an old fashioned thing to me. In the 70s you were seen as a ‘responsible owner’ if you trained your dog to wee and poo in the gutter near a drain! Now, quite rightly, you pick up poo. Wee is unpleasant I suppose, but not potentially harmful like poo. I don’t like to see trails of wee across the pavement though, so I make sure my dog isn’t so desperate she needs to do it there. I’ve never had a dog that is random with their toilet habits though, they have always been easy to predict so I work round that to avoid unnecessary mess when out.

MissMaple82 · 29/05/2022 18:01

Of course you are bring unreasonable. Get a grip!

potteringinmysocks · 29/05/2022 14:01

It didn't wee in her garden. It was never in her garden.

Potteringinmysocks, you sound insane

MiniatureHotdog · 29/05/2022 18:09

😂😂😂

potteringinmysocks · 29/05/2022 18:29

@MissMaple82 how do I sound insane?! I was responding to a poster who had issues with dogs weeing in their front garden... I was pointing out to the poster that the dog the op has taken offence to wasn't in the garden.. the dog had never been in the op's garden. Not sure what's insane about that?!

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 29/05/2022 18:35

My dog doesn't go on pavements. Grass verges is what he aims for.. you're being unreasonable.

We have a maintained grass verge. Someone let's their dog shit on it and doesn't pick it up.. so maybe pick your battles

Menora · 29/05/2022 18:36

Where I live the road and houses are all separated by grass verges, almost the whole area. I would have a hard job stopping my dog using the grass to go on, they naturally want to use it. I would never let him go on someone’s private property or garden but a public area is surely maybe better than a park, where people want to sit on the grass? People don’t usually sit on grass verges. YABU

Menora · 29/05/2022 18:37

Who the fuck would walk their dog into the road to squat on a drain? Like, when traffic is going past?

Staynow · 29/05/2022 18:51

You are the rude and entitled one thinking you can mow it and do as you please with it but other people can't use it as a public green space.

Bumblefuzz · 29/05/2022 18:54

When I first started reading, I thought the woman had a wee on the verge, as I couldn't understand why anyone would be upset about a dog doing a wee on a small piece of publicly owned grass.

Hugasauras · 29/05/2022 18:58

@MissMaple82 Did you quote the wrong poster? Confused That person has said nothing even approaching insane!

FabFitFifties · 29/05/2022 19:02

YANBU - it was very rude, when you were actually working on the verge at the time. I am an experienced dog owner - you absolutely can control where they do their business if on a lead. However, in normal circumstances, it is not unreasonable to allow a dog to wee on a public grass verge.

InChocolateWeTrust · 29/05/2022 19:12

Dogs do not just wee when and where they feel like it because damn near all of them are trained not to piss in the house, so they do have an ability to hold it until taken for a walk.

On that basis as a pp said, I'm kind of surprised people dont train their dog to go at the start of the walk over the drain nearest the house.

Dog piss everywhere is grim. It's not comparable to wildlife, dogs are far larger and the piss ends up concentrated near where people live.

As stated mine does. He's doesn't wee or poo on pavements. Grass verges though? Yup. No way on hell am I taking my dog into the road ffs

GirlInACountrySong · 29/05/2022 19:22

It's STUPID threads like this that make me use mumsnet less and less....the entitlement of some on here is bloody worrying!

GirlInACountrySong · 29/05/2022 19:24

Dogs wee....and mark territory

Ours does 6 small wee's/marks per walk usually

And our grass has no spots or patches from when he goes in the garden

People love making things up for a thread when they are bored on a Sunday afternoon

Oh, the DRAMA!!!

Minimalme · 29/05/2022 19:58

It's everyone's grass verge. You like to mow it, dog likes to piss on it.

In my fantasy life I get to worry about non problems like this because everything is going soooooo well.

You must be joking wanting dogs to squat over a drain so they don't use public grass 🙄

It's also not a case of if they pee once at the start of the walk that's them done. As so many people have pointed out in this thread, dogs pee to communicate and also mark their scent, they will pee where other dogs have, it's instinct.
Yes, you can control where dogs pee, that should be not letting them in peoples gardens, private property etc, not stopping them from going on a grass verge.

It is in every way comparable to wildlife - also a bit ridiculous to say dogs are bigger than wildlife, never seen a dog breed smaller than a fox where you live?

Soubriquet · 29/05/2022 21:08

I have a dog smaller than the average cat.

Shes smaller than my own cat.

Is she ok to go weeing on public grass?

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 29/05/2022 21:19

People don't even generally walk on the verges here

That doesn’t surprise me. I’m guessing they float everywhere on a cloud of self righteousness and entitlement.

Seriously though, I’ve had a very strong word with the dog I walk and have asked that they refrain from pishing on verges from now on.

You’re welcome. 😉

WishILivedInThrushGreen · 29/05/2022 22:00

You sound like you live in Surbiton.

Dogs wee . It's almost impossible to stop them from weeing.
Only support dogs can wee on command.

You shouldn't be mowing verges, it's the council's job. Certainly not in 'no mow May.'
