Phobia of a particular food???

Ever since I was a child, (now 26) , I’ve had an overwhelming fear of a certain sauce. Can’t even write the word, but it’s white and branded hellmans.

The fear is real. Like I can’t even walk past it in a shop I will avoid the isle. Everybody that knows me avoids it completely which I feel bad for but appreciate massively. Im unsure where the fear stems from as I don’t even think I’ve ever even tried it. I just have a horrendous built in fear and would refuse to try it as a child. I can’t sit with anybody that eats it. I can’t eat anything that’s been near it. I will stop eating if someone mentions the word!

I am unable to order from most takeaways now because, for example; KFC/McDonald’s/kebab houses etc - I will stress ‘No M*) and it will come with it anyway and I will literally inspect it and have a bloody panic attack if it’s found and I had touched it . I won’t take the risk anymore so I am scared to bloody get anything except for a safe bet pizza!
Whats annoying is meal deal sandwiches in any shop ever. They assume that every sandwich needs it on and everybody wants it so I’m never able to get a meal deal , I think just sainsbury’s does one - ‘only ham’ - yippeee.

I just can’t seem to escape it!

am I an absolute psychopath? Please tell me there’s other people out there with phobias alike ? What could be the issue here ??

It's the most unusual level of phobia I've heard of. I have a phobia of spiders but I can say the word.

My DH does hate that stuff and shares your annoyance at meal deal sandwiches. Tesco have a few like just ham, cheese and pickle, chicken tikka with chutney. Pret does a balsamic chicken, mozzarella and tomato baguette. The easiest way to find your options is to check their website and filter it with "no egg" or if that's not an option look for vegan (though some might have a fake version).

A psychopath no but you do need some serious therapy as that is not normal and your phobia should not impact on other people.
Honestly I can't believe that you haven't delt with this ridiculous aversion before

It's a phobia , they are by their nature irrational.
It's not 'a ridiculous aversion '.

I know how it started with eggs. I was 4 or 5 and read the story of Jemima puddleduck. The ending where the dogs eat her babies traumatised me and I spiralled from there.

I'm less sure where the baked bean thing came from, but I think it's connected to hearing "beans beans, good for your heart..." a lot in primary school. I don't think anything particularly happened, I think I just built the idea up in my head that beans are disgusting.

But I think I'm a bit weird in general about certain food textures/colours touching others. Like ketchup for instance, I will only have it in very specific and limited situations and even then have to grit my teeth a bit to eat it.

Actually I think I am a bit weird about some things in general full stop because now I am remembering how I really wanted to do gymnastics when I was younger but we couldn't really afford it. I begged and begged and eventually my mum took me to a class. At my first and only session I noticed one of the girls had a bit of white dry skin on the sole of her foot and it made me think of bird poo. All I remember of that class was trying to look at it, being both fascinated and disgusted. I refused to ever go back to gymnastics after that first session and never told my mum why. I hope it was a free trial. I'm not like that about dry skin anymore.

It is not ridiculous. Would you say that to someone terrified of spiders, or has a fear of flying?

You clearly don't understand what a phobia is.

Plinkyplankyplonk · 29/05/2022 15:23

Turkey, can't bare the sight or smell, just imagining eating it makes me feel ill. I know where my phobia comes from though.

balalake · 29/05/2022 15:31

I can understand not liking a particular food, but OP your fear seems so bad I think you need to seek help.

ddl1 · 29/05/2022 15:33

Well, you are U to have such a strong aversion to even seeing the food; but you are aware of this, and one often can't control one's phobias.

My dad had a less severe phobia of cottage cheese; he didn't mind seeing it or even seeing others eat it, but he was revolted by the idea of eating it himself. This seemed to be because he grew up on a farm, and cottage cheese looked like some of the 'bad' sour milk products that were disposed of as unfit for human consumption.

venusandmars · 29/05/2022 15:57

Phobia about austrian smoked cheese in a brown plastic casing.

I used to love it, I asked for it for Christmas [weird child]. Then one year in my stocking there was the familiar sausage shape... BUT it had chopped ham in it. Throught the brown plastic skin I thought the buts of ham were maggots (I could even imagine I saw them moving). Can't even look at it in the supermarket isle.

BrownHairedQuirk · 29/05/2022 16:04

I don’t have a phobia but just wanted to say that tesco meal deal wraps have a selection of M free ones that are really good! Especially the sweet chilli and this ham hock and apple chutney one I found the other day!

DressingPafe · 29/05/2022 16:16

For me it’s prawns. I can’t bear to look at them, I could never touch one, let alone actually eat one. When they’re shown on TV (like ads or cookery shows) I have to look away. My family know not to eat them in front of me. I tell prospective partners quite early on too! I couldn’t go for a “romantic meal” with the other person eating them and I could never ever kiss someone who’d just eaten them.

I have other foods I don’t like but nothing else affects me the way prawns do. I don’t know why I feel like that but luckily for me they aren’t as common as some other foods. So not hugely difficult to avoid.

Mammma91 · 29/05/2022 16:20

I don’t like it either OP. My 3 year old DS has a massive phobia of banana’s. Always been scared since he was weaning. Didn’t like the texture now can’t look at one without gagging. We have to hide them so he doesn’t see them in the house or he screams bloody murder. Never once was he forced or encouraged to eat it. We will seek out some help and support as he grows for it as I wouldn’t want him to have a panic attack over seeing one. I think therapy is the way to go OP.
