To think prices in car parks in city centres are too expensive now

Parked in city centre today and was shocked at the prices.
£1 for 30 minites,
£2 for 1 hour,
£4 for 2 hours,
Isn't that a bit much? And surely it will damage the high street shops and restaurants that will be struggling already enough after pandemic and now the cost of living crisis.

To park in the car park at the arena where I go to gigs often is £11.
Because of the fucked up Scotrail trains there's no public transport either.
It's shit.

Nw22 · 28/05/2022 15:31

I wish it was that much in my city. Sone car parks charge £20 for more than 4 hours

thevanilla · 28/05/2022 15:33

that’s cheap!

greenbirdsong · 28/05/2022 15:37

It is expensive in the town where I live. Which is one of the reasons the high street is becoming a ghost town with empty shops and the out of town retail parks are thriving.

DenholmElliot1 · 28/05/2022 15:39

Thats cheap compared to where I live. Which city was it.

I guess if you can afford to drive into the city and shop as a leisure activity then you should be able to pay for parking. I don't mind paying, as long as funds go to the local community (which they probably don't lol)

I'd be happy to use public transport but thats rubbish where i liv.

Mushroo · 28/05/2022 15:41

That’s cheap! It’s about £20 in Manchester for 4 hours.

girlmom21 · 28/05/2022 15:41

Where do you live? That's cheaper than pay and display at our local parks.

SwedishEdith · 28/05/2022 15:43

I think it should be more expensive in the daytime. We should be discouraging driving into city centres. Evenings, yes, should be relatively affordable as public transport can be shit.

nearlyspringyay · 28/05/2022 15:45

I think that's cheap!

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 15:50

LA budgets have been slashed by central govt at a time when there is ever greater need for services.

Fees and charges is a key way for them to generate income. I don't have a problem paying for parking.

It's also nudge economics to deter car driving which I support (although without realistic alternatives might well result in fewer visits to town centres - it's difficult getting the balance right).

UsernameA1B2 · 28/05/2022 15:50

£20 for more than 4 hours 😮
I live in Lancashire.

Is this a city with a park and ride?

2pinkginsplease · 28/05/2022 15:53

This is the one reason why we don’t shop in our local city, the parking charges are astronomical. We head to shopping centres where the parking is free and the city centres wonder why so many people are deserting shopping in them.

UsernameA1B2 · 28/05/2022 15:53

If they want to deter car driving then surely public transport should better, more frequent and be cheaper.

We can't get in or out of our small town after 8pm because of Scotrail, so we have to use our cars.
We're only 40 minutes out of Glasgow too.

orwellwasright · 28/05/2022 15:54

It's quite a progressive tax too because preumably it will help maintain car parks - something you have no need of unless you use them.

Mostly it's Tories that whinge about paying charges yet they're the ones championing taxes that are only paid by those who'll benefit. So this should suit them.

purplesequins · 28/05/2022 15:55

tbh it's too cheap imo.

but shit if no alternative (secure cycle ways, public transport) is offered.

There is no alternative here.
It's either pay parking or don't leave after 8.
I quite like to go to the Cinema and gigs, neither of which we have.

MissyGez · 28/05/2022 16:08

We get 2hrs free to encourage people to go to the town centre

LondonQueen · 28/05/2022 16:09

lol, I paid £25 for 4 hours in Leeds.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 28/05/2022 16:10

In Liverpool the main city centre parking is £11.80 for up to 4 hours. But then there's a few streets (not residential) where you can park for free and it's only 20 minutes away

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 28/05/2022 16:13

Where I live now (south east) shops are shutting down and the parking is quite expensive. But then it's also always full so I think the issue here is more raising prices for street rental.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 28/05/2022 16:13

I was in Manchester recently and used the free park and ride carpark at East Didsbury, and got the tram into the city centre and back which was great.
Hoping Leeds has similar as I'll be there in mid June.

Ouch, missed this when I posted.
Is there a park and ride?

Fairyliz · 28/05/2022 16:14

I live about 5 miles outside of a city and the public transport is dire, about one bus every two hours and they often don’t turn up.
The parking costs about £7 for three hours so consequently I never go into the city but instead shop at the out of town retail park.
The city is now grim and desolate and the council wonder why.
