My house is brand new, super duper insulated. But the cost of heating it has still doubled because energy firms are greedy. Standing charges have gone up to account for people using less fuel.

I also used to live in a drafty old terrace. The LL got insulation installed for £500 under a government scheme and then the whole house ended up with damp and we had to leave the windows open all of the time to stop it. Offsetting the insulation completely.

There's been free insulation for years. Maybe they stopped it more recently.

But agreed. Additional insulation would help everyone.

No, it won't help everyone. That's the point that many posters have been making. There are many of us living in older houses where adding insulation to the walls will cause damp issues. What will help everyone is investing in reliable baseload generation that keeps us independent from fossil fuels sourced from dodgy states.

As I type this 63% of our electricity tonight is being generated from gas-fired power stations. Granted, almost all of our gas supplies are home-generated or from friendly states such as Norway but we are still subject to changes in wholesale prices caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Find an alternative to gas turbines and our gas demand will fall by a third. This will not only reduce gas prices for domestic and industrial users, but it will also help Europe wean itself off Russian supplies.

@Porridgeislife
I spoke to the company who did our solar installation as they also fit GSHP and they said usually 2-2.5 times the size. So I did normal rad calcs for each room and most of ours were oversized already so only needed doubling.
The only rooms we didn't do that for were the utility and conservatory as they will be replaced by a new build with underfloor heating.
