And then needs to be winded for an hour or so, before she settles down:

I'm exhausted. When does it get easier ?

With my first, she never woke up this much and by 5 weeks she slept through pretty much. Maybe one feed.

I am
Exhausted

Op, my partner was self employed too. Does he leave home early? Can he start late so he can do the 11pm/12am feed and then sleep?

User0610134049 · 28/05/2022 08:38

It will get better OP, it will
in my case it was 10-12 weeks.
also they start being more squidgy and smiley by then too which I think helps as you get something back!

Pippainthegarden · 28/05/2022 08:40

It is normal and you just have to adapt your life around it as much as you can within your means. Sounds like you had a very easy first child. Reduce your commitments to a minimum, If you can afford/access extra childcare for your older one, get a cleaner etc so you have chance to nap when baby does during the day. If no help then could dh help when not at work and do a shift system? It does get easier x

Yes it gets easier. I had a small baby, and she could only take a small amount of food, so was up every two hours - It was hell! You have my sympathies, but it does get better, hang in there

Mine wasn't small, but only takes around 60ml at feedings. When I look back at my first, she took more at feedings. This one sometimes takes more too, but then the vomiting is so much more. Also has a lot of cottage cheese vomiting later on. Basically the little thing is constantly possetting and covered in milk. So many outfit changes and so many bibs and muslins !

Sounds like my DS (he had terrible reflux, it got to the point he wasn't gaining anywhere near as much weight as he needed to). We tried, in order:
Infacol,
Tilting the moses basket,
Cutting out dairy (I was breastfeeding),
Anti-colic bottles,
Carobel in his milk.

The only thing that made a difference was carobel, but it was almost instant and he was a completely different baby!

ChocolateHippo · 28/05/2022 08:46

You'll survive if you sleep in shifts. Your DP needs to take the baby from when he gets in until midnight/one in the morning. He then gets to sleep until 7 or whenever he has to get up and you do wakings during that time.

TheGlitterFairy · 28/05/2022 09:01

OP try the Aptamil anti reflux formula - was a game changer for us when DS was 3 months old - I didn’t know it existed until I reached the end of my tether one night at 3am after another massive vom everywhere and spoke to the GP about it the next day. She suggested trying this first before any medication. As I say it was a game changer for us.

JenniferBarkley · 28/05/2022 09:04

You poor thing. It might be normal, but it's brutal.

Great that you're bottle feeding - it means your DH can take a meaningful shift (which he absolutely needs to start doing), and it'll make it easier to get any meds in. We never did manage to get gaviscon into our breastfed baby. 🙄

Infacol will help with wind but make reflux worse, so try both with and without to see what's working best.

I found that with the GP I needed to stress that this wasn't about laundry or my own rest - the baby was clearly in pain and so we needed to try something to help her. Ranitidine worked for us but you can't get it any more, there are other options though.

TheNinny · 28/05/2022 09:07

mine started sleeping through just before 6 months.

her worst sleep was at 5.5 months. She generally slept ok though but as a newborn in the first few weeks home I would’ve loved every 2 hours. Mine was every 45 mins for at least 3 weeks and it almost broke me. It will pass though, it will !

SmallDucks · 28/05/2022 09:14

Fuck me, I just wrote a long message and my thumb twitched and it deleted.

Lets start again.

All babies have reflux to a certain extent. Some things make it worse, such as swallowing air or difficulty getting air up (or CMPA if there's other symptoms).

What bottle/teat do you use? Does she sound like she swallows air or make a ticking sound? Does a lot of milk come out around her mouth when she feeds? Is she calm and relaxed when she feeds or stressed, crying and stops a lot?

I saw you mentioned infacol, have you tried it or planning on trying it?

SmallDucks · 28/05/2022 09:15

Also, has anyone discussed 'paced feeding' with you?

The cottage cheese is just quite digested milk.
Possets of milk are entirely normal.

Sounds like you have a newborn to me!

Slept through for 5 weeks??? Sounds like you were very, very lucky with that.

Yeah it was crazy. She would sleep from midnight until 6 ish from around 5 weeks !

I paid for it though after. From around 4 months, that stopped and she was up all night !

You must only switch to non-dairy with medical advice, it is not something to try on a whim.

My baby is CMPA by time I spoke to GP it was obvious I knew much more than him about it, his response was yeah give it a whirl sounds like you know what you're doing. As with most things GPS do not have time or resources to be experts at. When I went back and wanted a prescription for a amino milk I walked him through the difference between that and hydrolysed.

I use MAM anti colic bottles. There's some milk around the mouth during feedings. A definite clicking sound happens sometimes, more often recently.

I have been using infacol for a couple of weeks, but haven't used it the last couple of days I would say.

My baby is simmilarly refluxey. She is also CMPA. However I don't think the 2 were related. Dairy affected her digestion predominantly - she would writhe and scream in pain. Went DF at 2 weeks, now 9 weeks. The reflux wind seemed to be getting better which I believed was just her getting older but past few days it's got worse. Falls asleep whilst being winded but when I put get down she is clearly still windy abd wakes up choking. HV suggested getting prescription for gaviscon so going to ask for this Mon but I'm skeptical this will help the wind. I'm giving her gripe water too.

ChampagneLassie · 28/05/2022 09:34

I also use infacol

urrrgh46 · 28/05/2022 09:35

Sounds like colic and reflux to me and being a fussy newborn to me (dare I say a bit more of a typical boy 😱😳 5 boys 4 girls here). I'd be asking for some reflux meds from the doctors, use gripe water and keep baby as upright as possible as much as possible. Totally understand the Work situation my DH went back to work after 4 days when I had my 3rd I was discharged on the Thursday and he went to work on the Monday. I had 3 under 3 at the time. But second that he needs to take baby during the evening and do a lions share on his day off to allow you to sleep more. The LAST thing he needs is you going under - that'll make his life much, much, much harder than doing more in the evening/day off. Good luck!

urrrgh46 · 28/05/2022 09:36

Just read you have a girl - fussy newborn then not typical boy! 🤦🏽‍♀️

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 28/05/2022 09:37

Two very quick things. The clicking could be tongue tie which means they get more air. They no longer cut this on the NHS but a friend went private after her son had one.
I had severe reflux babies who were prem. I had to fight to be listened to and eventually had gaviscon.
I know several babies who are dairy intolerant and the symptoms are similar to what you describe. If you've switched to formula it might be allergy related more than reflux.

I actually don't think it's normal to have to wake every two hours, at least on a normal day. Even with my prem reflux baby they went three hours-4 in the early days. I could've just been lucky!

Glitterspy · 28/05/2022 09:38

Notsurenotquiteright · 28/05/2022 09:45

Check the size of the teat on the bottle, baby may be getting too much air when feeding if teat hole too big.
consider if the baby may have a reflux problem- this could be due to cows milk allergy- if you have a next to me crib put it on a slight tilt feet down so baby isn’t flat on their back.

you have likely already had a tongue tie check but I would strongly advise getting a second opinion-
ive been dealing with reflux, wind, hourly wake ups and poor latch since baby born - midwife, health visitor and gp all said no tongue tie. Finally diagnosed at 6 months.

we had to sit for an hour burping sometimes.
what helped stop the need for this was feeding and then keeping baby upright for 10-20mins after a feed.

4 weeks. Just won't settle after feeds. Lots of spitting up and lots of grunting and crying and just not settling after feeds.

Mine is just coming up to 4weeks old and she is the same takes what seems like forever to wind her, she's not too bad with feeds at night possible 3-4hours until she wakes up. Just wish husband would understand "I need to go to bed now at 8pm/9pm" and then keeps me awake till 11pmish at night.

I'm hoping it will get better
