PFB - Drying clothes outside

I think I am having a PFB moment! Should I dry my babies clothes outside on the line?

1st baby is due in July, I have huge boxes of 2nd hand clothes. To be fair they are all clean I just don't know what they were washed in so I'm rewashing them all with fairy.

Anyway 1st load is on now, will I dry them outside? I normally dry clothes outside if possible. Good bit of wind and it's sunny today. But many farmers, inc my DH, are cutting silage today so I'm imagining grass/ pollen being up. I am allergic to both so baby might be, many people are! Over thinking?

Will this possibly 'get on the clothes'? However I dry them I plan on putting them in the tumble dryer for 10 mins to make them nice and soft.

YABU - dry them on the line
YANBU - do not dry them on the line

I always dried my babies clothes outside - loved how soft everything felt and smelt so lovely. And - Free!

Bunty55 · 27/05/2022 11:47

Why not wait until they have finished in your area?

Perfect thanks 😊I do love when I get to dry all the clothes outside so not sure why I questioned this!

Look out for spiders willies 😆

Darkstar4855 · 27/05/2022 11:50

Put them on the line, don’t waste energy on the tumble dryer. Global warming is far more of a worry than a bit of grass pollen!

WalkerWalking · 27/05/2022 11:56

Do whatever you're more comfortable with. Never feel guilty about "being ridiculous" when it comes to your baby xx

FWIW though, I washed and tumble dried and put away a whole load of newborn clothes, and then the neighbours decided to have a huge bonfire which somehow got through our (single glazed) windows, and inside the chest of drawers, and I ended up washing the whole lot again anyway 🤦‍♀️🤣🤣

Irishfarmer · 27/05/2022 12:01

@DorothyZbornakIsAQueen it's too late for my own clothes, I left them outside all night 😂

@WalkerWalking thanks, I feel I have been mostly calm/ chilled but then I get a little bit ooooo is that safe for a tiny little baby!! That is so annoying about the smoke. It is a mad dash for the line here when the neighbours go spreading slurry!!

Bug them on the line.

Top tip, sun acts as a bleach and will take poo stains out of stuff. I used cloth nappies for my second child. The sun was amazing.

KarmaStar · 27/05/2022 12:45

Agree,let them dry naturally outside.
Lovely to see a long white line of clean nappies blowing in the wind.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/05/2022 12:58

Better for them on the line than tumble dried, less chance of shrinking.

Irishfarmer · 27/05/2022 14:11

2nd load nearly done. 1st load out on the line they are so freaking tiny!!! I will need about 1000 more pegs. I dry pretty much all my clothes on the line not sure why I thought it wouldn't be ok. I'm blaming baby brain

New baby clothes, all hanging together on the washing line is such a lovely sight!

WonderingWanda · 27/05/2022 14:24

I love how you've talked yourself down op...this was a bonkers moment 😉

Hullabaloo31 · 27/05/2022 14:31

Definitely dry outside, and second what another poster said about the sunshine, you'll be needing that to fade the exploda-poo stains out of clothes. Works like a charm!

powershowerforanhour · 27/05/2022 14:33

The silage is still gonna be leafy rather than stemmy and pollen-y I would think. Anyway, not convinced cutting is really going to stir the pollen up that much. My mum used to get ferocious hayfever at times (bummer for her, she loved gardening) and wouldn't have thought twice about hanging our (or her) stuff out. Two of us turned out fine, my brother became very slightly asthmatic then grew out of it and is now fine.
Ahhh the smell of silage. It's the smell of summer. All I need is the distant banging of silage trailer tailgates and the tractor buckraking and I will be lulled to sleeepp...
Anyway, am most impressed with your organisational skills getting all the stuff ready now.

Diesel fumes too that damage lungs

Being protective and worrying is part of the job…. May I wish you well for the birth and hope you smile when you see your baby in these freshly laundered clothes ….and yes lots of pegs or those sock hanger things ( perfect for tiny clothes) would be a useful addition to the baby equipment …..

namnamnam22 · 27/05/2022 15:35

I had my DD in September last year and soon you’ll realise there’s nothing better than getting everything out in the fresh air to dry, it’s honestly one of my favourite things in life now 😂😂

Madmaxxy · 27/05/2022 15:40

I've found that pure cotton baby clothes are more prone to shrinkage in a tumble dryer. Dry on the line :)

Topseyt123 · 27/05/2022 15:49

I had three babies and always dried the baby clothes out on the line wherever possible..

wanderingscot · 27/05/2022 16:05

Why not? Tumble dryers were only invented c. 60 years ago. Everyone had to dry their clothes outside before that

Irishfarmer · 27/05/2022 16:17

They do look very cute all out on the line together. I plan to use reusable nappies too so good to know about the sun helping with poo stains! I always put the duvet out to let the sun/ air get at them. I love getting the clothes dried outside just had a weird moment where I was thinking it would irritate his skin if it gets full of pollen, but the clothes won't get full of pollen!!

I have one of those sock hangers in the garage must go look for it.

And just to be clear, I did think I was being unreasonable! I dry all my clothes outside at this time of year.

If your nappies have poo stains on them you’re not washing them correctly! Join clean cloth nappies on Facebook, and learn how to wash them properly before you start. Cloth nappies are fabulous but only if they get nicely clean.
