Posting to try and take our minds off bad things for a moment
I'm in my fifties someone on here posted about a "Party wall" a few weeks ago, I laughed because I thought they were mistaken, I have always thought the word for a wall between two properties was "Parting wall"
How did I not know ??
Also over the years when I've watched, usually men taking off the tops of beer bottles with their hands on US programmes.
I may or most definitely may have tried to do this myself not realising they have twisty tops in the US.
You ?

My DH didn't really believe lamb was lamb. He thought it was a word for part of the sheep!

Wasn’t there someone (a weather forecaster) on Would I Lie to You who thought sheep and lambs were different animals?

Yes Tomasz Schafenacker!

Isn’t Mirror in the Bathroom by The Beat?

Yes it is.

I thought, well into my adult years, that spiders got into the bath/sink by crawling up the plug hole 😲

I have a terrible fear of spiders so when I was growing up, I would put the plugs in before going on holiday to stop them coming up! By sheer chance, whenever we returned there were no spiders which just reinforced the idea.

DH thought I'd lost the plot when he saw me putting the plugs in as we were about to go on holiday 😂

lop32 · 29/05/2022 22:14

Hang on, I thought spiders can come up the plug hole or the overflow hole?

If thy came in up the plughole they'd need to be good swimmers because of the u-bend thingy.

I think mostly they fall in, and if you leave a bathmat or towel hanging over the side they will eventually find it and crawl up it and escape. That way you don't come back from holiday and find a dead spider in the bath.

ChristineCagney11 · 29/05/2022 22:23

It's very unlikely they arrive up the plug hole, given the heat of the water let out, plus the water in general. They tend to fall in and get trapped in the bath looking for water.
You can put a spiders ladder in to help them out or as PP has suggested leave a towel or something similar there so they can get out

This thread is so informative...! I also thought pineapples grew on trees. I was genuinely amazed when I saw this too - a massive pepper-like thing for a tiny cashew nut

@lop32
There's a cashew nut in there ?😮
That has blown my mind

Truly brilliant thread 😂

I have had so many of these moments, but now can't think of a single one. Prob too busy laughing

BrassyLocks · 30/05/2022 01:57

@PumpkinPie2016 You're not wrong. If you go away for a while the water in the pipes dries up, allowing creepy crawlies to make their way through. I've seen the floors of apartments left empty for a long time strewn with dead cockroaches that came up sinks and baths and then presumably starved. Disgusting 😖

The cashew is the little thing hanging at the bottom. Which sounds wrong but hopefully you know what I mean...

I've always sung that too!

My son heard another line as "I miss the trains down in Africa" so that's all I wing now.

There was a male Anne in France, constable of France in fact.

StrangeLookingParasite · 30/05/2022 12:04

er, all I sing not wing.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/05/2022 12:41

Whereas the Waltons "Ma Walton" really is called Michael. That's why they put the word "Miss" in front of her name on the credits..."Miss Michael Learned"

Isn't there also a (female) Michael in The Bangles?

Clive James' birth name was Vivian, which was indeed a unisex name then; but as soon as Vivien Leigh came to stardom, it largely became considered only a female name (even though the spellings might have been different) - and I gather he was bullied for it. His mum let him choose a new name for himself and change it when he was quite young.

Wasn't that also sort of the premise of The Young Ones - with Vyvyan (whose surname I've only just learned was 'Basterd'!) being a tough, toxically-masculine hard nut but who also had the misfortune to have what could be (and regularly was) made fun of as 'a girls' name'?!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 30/05/2022 12:45

Same here! I wondered why people actually liked it as pepper and chocolate just seemed weird

Probably all the same people who nowadays buy salted caramel - I assume somebody must be buying it, as the shops still keep stocking it!

Coming soon: 'strawberry scampi' and 'Vienetta gravy' Grin

rbe78 · 30/05/2022 13:13

Apologies if someone has already posted this, but here's some coconut truth:

As the orignal coconut poster said, they grow on the trees green, and what we know as a coconut is just the central kernel. The inner coconut is surrounded by a load of fibrous material (the remainder of which is the hairs on the kernel - they don't grow during transport!!), then green skin on the outside.

Oh and I've just remembered, when texting first became a thing, I was absolutely one of those people that thought LOL was lots of love.

When I first started seeing Dh years ago he sent me a lovely message with a kiss on the end of it. It took me far too long to realise that there wasn't a special button to add the kiss. It was just an x Blush

NecklessMumster · 31/05/2022 09:48

When I was a small child my parents told me they were going to decorate my room. I excitedly anticipated a type of streamers/bunting/tinsel affair and was very disappointed to realise it just meant new wallpaper

Aww that's sweet but sad at the same time - I can just imagine your wee disappointed face! I hope your world is full of bunting and tinsel now (well, as much as you want it to be anyway!)😊

@ChristineCagney11 I've had a message from my mum in the past...

Please call me, your grandad is very sick and nanny is not coping LOL.

I was very confused until I found out she thought it meant that.

lop32 · 01/06/2022 07:30

My mother seems incapable of using punctuation in texts. She sent me one that read "We've had a trying day dad dying to see you". I had to read it a number of times before I stopped panicking.

Yesterday it was shouty CAPS for no particular reason. Along with a daily quota of random voice recordings on WhatsApp.

Dara O'Brien does a routine about the excavation of the channel tunnel, all about the digger machine and what happened to it afterwards.
It's hilarious and tragic at the same time, I think he said it was one of the most commented on things he ever did cos so many people were upset by the ending.

in the spirit of the yhread....my sister was in her 30s when she discovered that Washington D.C. and Washington state were different things, when nobody met her at the airport!
