Posting to try and take our minds off bad things for a moment
I'm in my fifties someone on here posted about a "Party wall" a few weeks ago, I laughed because I thought they were mistaken, I have always thought the word for a wall between two properties was "Parting wall"
How did I not know ??
Also over the years when I've watched, usually men taking off the tops of beer bottles with their hands on US programmes.
I may or most definitely may have tried to do this myself not realising they have twisty tops in the US.
You ?

to be honest OP, it's amazing what men can use to take the tops off beer bottles, where need be. They can pretty much do it with their eyelashes.

I genuinely believed until long after I had passed my own driving test, that it was illegal to drive along with the internal lights on in the car. And I just had to google it again now before I posted, to make ansolutysure that it really isn’t illegal 😃

Thank you. All my life I have believed this 🤦🏼‍♀️

That elbow grease was a product you could buy, like Mr Muscle.

That it was "on tenderhooks" rather than "on tenterhooks". I used to imagine a fish impaled on a hook. Still think tenderhooks is better.

Elbow Grease is a product nowadays

My OH's friend has the nickname Mini (OH says it's because he's short, but they've always called him it and it's fine). I told DD the other day that his real name is John and she couldn't believe all these years she'd been calling him by his nickname as if she was agreeing that he's short! She said "my whole life has been a lie" 🤣

A family friend has only ever been known by her nickname. Every year my parents got a Christmas card from Rob and Maureen and had no idea who they were 😁 Eventually one year it came addressed from Rob and Maureen (‘Nickname’) - I think they’d finally twigged my parents had never sent them a card back!

Our youngest son is named Leon and is almost 20. About 6 months ago my mum revealed that she'd only just found out that it was a 'real' name. She thought dh and I had made it up.

She's not a Stranglers fan then 😁

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 28/05/2022 18:32

Abba songs are an endless source of "misheard lyric" amusement - my favourite mistake was in One of Us - where it should be "and so I dealt you the blow, one of us had to go", I used to sing it as "and so I dealt you the blow, when the bus had to go".

  • *I also thought it was ‘When the bus had to go’! I thought she ditched him, then pissed off on a bus 😁

As a side note, if you haven’t heard Cher’s cover of ‘One of Us’, have a listen - it’s amazing.

NoisyBrain · 28/05/2022 18:35

On the subject of misheard advert songs (I also thought it was "peppery goodness") for ages I thought that Toblerone took "triangular robins" from triangular trees. I was quite disappointed to discover it was actually almonds.

I’m 😱 at Evelyn Waugh - always thought ‘he’ was a man (studied Decline & Fall) and have corrected people in this before!!

Evelyn Waugh, the famous writer, WAS a man.

Pelsall116 · 28/05/2022 18:40

As a child we used to sing On Ilkley Moor Bar Tat at brownies - I thought it was on Milky Mow by Tat
My mother thought that Abba's Song Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (a man after Midnight) was a Ladder til Midnight

That dogs kept themselves completely clean and tidy in the same way that cats do. What a hideous surprise when we got our dog a few years ago!

Unless she's filthy, mine does. I quite often hear a "slurp, slurp" and glance over to see her washing.

Thisisnotreallymyname · 28/05/2022 18:42

Before I learnt to drive, I thought you had to remember to switch the brake lights on every time you applied the rake 🤔😳

Thisisnotreallymyname · 28/05/2022 18:43

“ brake “ LOL

bellocchild · 28/05/2022 18:44

"thought the Channel tunnel went through the sea, not under the ground!"
You must have missed the news bulletin where the tunnelling machines met in the middle!

Happyher · 28/05/2022 18:45

I used to think the song ‘poetry in motion’ was actually ‘oh a tree in motion’. I used to live near a factory call Hall & Pickles and I always thought it was Halls Pickles it wasn’t till I mentioned ‘the pickled onions factory’ to my DH and he laughed at me and put me right, that I knew

sueelleker · 28/05/2022 18:48

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 27/05/2022 12:52

I believed there was a Police Nessy in the Family Ness named Eliot Ness. I even have a completely false memory of seeing this character in the show.
I must have heard about the real life prohibition agent of that name, conflated it with the TV show and then imagined the rest.

Are you thinking of The Untouchables? www.imdb.com/title/tt0106165/

NotMushroomInEre · 27/05/2022 21:53

I was around 28 when I realised it was a chest of drawers and not 'Chester drawers'. I wouldn't mind, but I'd had a mortgage for 4 years and I'd bought some previously. I thought they must've been made in Chester. I blame the Yorkshire accent 😅

I used to pronounce drawers as draw-ers, until my DH corrected me!

EatAllDay · 28/05/2022 18:50

I recently discovered the word is longitude … not longdidtude
Mortified !!!

I thought it was 'Like a tree in motion'.

And that 'You and me endlessly' in 'Grooving' was 'You and me and Elsie'.

"Good King Wenceslas LAST looked out.
😃

My DP says 'Good King Wences' when talking about the song.
He's a musician, has played it in concerts and Carol Services for years. Obviously never looked at the title.

lop32 · 28/05/2022 18:59

Until last week. Segue. Pronounced in the same way you'd say segway. I thought it meant gliding effortlessly as you were on a Segway (scooter).

Appreciate it's not a million miles off the actual definition but I'd always rather prided myself on my pretentious use of vocabulary. This has now stopped.

riesenrad · 28/05/2022 18:59

I was rather miffed when we got to the shops and it was all sofas and chairs and it turned out they meant sofa suites

I used to mishear "three piece suite" as 3p sweet.

riesenrad · 28/05/2022 19:00

As for segue, I thought people were saying segway. It kind of works in context :)

@diddl
I say all-so and ah-mund

Colleague says olso (like with an o as in orange) and Al-mund (al as in gal).

I'm with your colleague there.

@FlippityFlapperty (love the name)
That woman was absolutely wrong
Brown hairy coconuts are just matured green ones.

It doesn’t matter if the fruit on the tree is green or brown they still need the husk removed to reveal the the brown hairy coconut we see in supermarkets 😊
