To regret spending too much money.

Hi everyone

So before anyone says it I realise I am very fortunate to be in this position. Me and huby both earn an average income and one of our priorities when it comes to spending is 1 holiday abroad a year. We are generally very frugal in terms of spending and I always manage to find good deals on holidays. We have 3 kids and in the past the max we have spent on a week away is £3k.

We havent been anywhere since covid and with the kids being off and me an huby both having annual leave I have booked a surprise last minute holiday for the family which has cost me £5k. I told the kids and huby today and they were all so excited and to be honest I am looking forward to it too. However in the back of my mind I cant believe I have spent this much money. AIBU?

If you can afford it then no yanbu

Justwingingit2005 · 26/05/2022 21:52

I think 5k for 5 is about right if u spent 3k precovid.
We booked our summer hol 2022 last summer and it was 4k, priced it up last weekend for curiosity and it was nearly 6k.

bumpermom · 26/05/2022 21:52

We are a family of 5 and £5k is average for a holiday. We've spent £5.5k for this summers one. Enjoy!

gamerchick · 26/05/2022 21:52

Sounds about right for holidays atm. If you can afford it then let it go and enjoy.

Badgirlriri · 26/05/2022 21:53

Where are you going?

don’t say centre parcs or YABU 😂

User135792468 · 26/05/2022 21:54

Thats 1000 pp for flights, hotel, food etc. Hardly extortionate. This is the weirdest humble brag as it’s quite a normal price to pay in school holidays.

Nothingiseverything · 26/05/2022 21:54

Just enjoy it!

AyeEee123 · 26/05/2022 21:55

If you can afford it then I don’t think it’s a problem. We spend a lot on family holidays but it’s worth every penny to us, the memories are invaluable.

Nubbled · 26/05/2022 21:55

Sounds average to me (for these days)

DSGR · 26/05/2022 21:56

We’re a family of 5 and we spend more than £5K per holiday. Have fun!

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 26/05/2022 21:57

I agree sounds average for 5 people.

This made me LOL.

We are going to Turkey for a week and staying on a really nice resort. In the back of my head I keep thinking it's too much money even though I know I can afford it. Part of the regret is that last week when I looked it was £4k but it shot up in price so I ended up paying £5k. Wish i had booked sooner.

That's a good price if you're going somewhere abroad. The price of holidays has massively increased.

In 2019 we went to Florida and it cost us £7k all in for 2 weeks family of 3. Priced it up for this year....... £11k (staying exactly where we did last time etc), so YANBU. It's the high amount of rescheduled holidays too which has driven the price up.

5thHelena · 26/05/2022 22:01

£5k sounds about right for a family holiday to me

rookiemere · 26/05/2022 22:01

The money is already spent. Unless you can cancel the holiday and get a full refund then stop agonising.
Any economies you can make between now and the holiday to make you feel better about things and put some more money back in your coffers.
Is it AI - even if not you can make sure you eat and spend cheaply when away.

TabithaTittlemouse · 26/05/2022 22:02

You can afford it so it’s not a problem. If you were getting into debt I would still think it’s fine. It’s your money and your life. Enjoy!

Have you been accused of being tone deaf or stealth boasting yet? If not it won’t be long!

Asvan · 26/05/2022 22:08

Ok I get it I'm being very unreasonable. Yes I can afford it and I havent gone Into debt so I really should stop agonising like this. It's just hard as I normally live so frugally and could never see myself ever spending this much on a holiday.

OP posts:
Bournetilly · 26/05/2022 22:23

Just enjoy it! You can afford it and you haven’t been away in a few years.

Ragwort · 26/05/2022 22:29

If you think about it as £1k per person and break it down to cost per night it doesn't sound excessive ... I spent £1k on a weeks holiday in Turkey (for one) pre covid ...

Asvan · 26/05/2022 23:01

Thanks everyone. Had a good few wobbles over it today lol. I have been bought up to be very frugal as I come from very humble beginnings. I really think I need to learn to enjoy treating myself to the little luxuries in life.

Lovinglife45 · 26/05/2022 23:09

This works out at £1000 per person. This is good for flights, accommodation and possibly half board/all inclusive.

You also stated that you can afford it.

Enjoy!

Hoolahulahoop · 26/05/2022 23:11

The fact you have missed out on two summer holidays .. would that make you feel better ?

Antarcticant · 26/05/2022 23:17

As you missed your holidays in 2020 and 2021 you can divide the cost by three if it makes you feel better - you wouldn't feel bad if you'd spent £1.6k the last two years and were spending the same again this year.

BorisJohnsonatemyhampster · 26/05/2022 23:20

I don’t understand the voting? Is it YABU to be worried or YANBU to spend the money?

Banoffe · 26/05/2022 23:22

Think of it as you’ve missed two holidays, so 6 grands worth of holidays. Therefore it’s a free holiday 🤗

Just enjoy it and think of the memories you’ll make on your first family holiday in two years. Your kids won’t be kids forever so it’s money we’ll spent 😊
