I’ve never had a job interview before.

It’s over teams, so that already makes me very nervous as I find being on camera rather than face to face very nerve wracking.

It said the the job advert that they’re available to discussing part time hours, which due to change of circumstances is what I’m going to be after. Do I speak about this with them tomorrow?
I’ve also applied to do my masters in September as I didn’t hear back for a while and assumed I didn’t get the job. So I tell them this before or after the interview? I really want the job and with part time hours I think I can fit this in around doing my masters.

Any tips would be hugely appreciated too.
I’m really very nervous.

I would perhaps email today with hours you can work and ask if these are acceptable to them as you dont want to waste their time. I had a candidate do this recently and it made it a lot easier than trying to talk about it in the interview and meant we knew her expectations etc. Re Masters is this relevant to position? If not perhaps wouldn't mention it.

Interviews are just as much about them talking to you about your interest in the role and organisation as it is about you establishing whether it's somewhere you want to work.

They should give you an opportunity to ask questions, so I would absolutely talk about doing your masters and whether doing part time during this is a possibility.

They are just people doing a job, their job is to work out whether you can be successful in the role you have applied for so please don't stress.

Find out the values of the organisation. Let’s say one was ‘Equality’, mention that’s important to you and say how you demonstrate that in your personal life/previous job role. Use the STAR technique for answering questions: S- situation T- task A- Action R- result. Example:

How have you dealt with a difficult patient:

S- When working as a support worker it was a hot day and I was asked to speak to a patient as they were complaining it was hot in the waiting room and it was also an hour past their appointment time.

T- My task was to establish why they had been waiting for so long. I did this by checking the notes drawer and quickly realised that the consultant they were due to see had been late to clinic.

A- I introduced myself to the patient and explained the above. I explained that they were next in the queue. I also went and found a fan as it was a hot sunny day.

R- The patient thanked me for explaining that their appointment time is an arrival time and they then saw the consultant. I also spoke to the matron about buying more fans for the waiting room.

Always use the work I, never We. The interviewers want to know what you did.

Thankyou!

ive noticed in my email with the interview link, there are other names copied in. Would this be the interview panel, not other candidates? I don’t like the thought of being interviewed with other candidates.

Bound to be the other interviewers.

RibNSaucyArseCrack · 26/05/2022 13:03

so No need to email ahead, just speak to them tomorrow about everything? I’m so nervous.

Yes it'll be the other interviewers!

What's the job/industry? Some would be more open to flexibility than others!

RibNSaucyArseCrack · 26/05/2022 15:12

It’s in the health industry, don’t want to go to into it as it’s quite niche and may well be an interviewer on here haha!

It says they can offer flexible working ontthe job advert. I really really want the job. But the masters training will be quite intensive.

im not sure wether to see if I get the job and do my masters later. I guess all I can do is be honest with them and see what they say.

I had two Teams interviews during lockdown and found it really helpful to stick large post its all up on the wall behind my laptop, with key points/words to remind me what I wanted to say. Sometimes I didn't need them, sometimes a quick glance, when I felt I was 'drying up', gave me a boost. Just an idea.
Good luck!

jeaux90 · 27/05/2022 17:59

How did it go OP?

RibNSaucyArseCrack · 27/05/2022 19:29

It went well! I should hear next week if I’ve been successful. I was open and honest about uni and they were understanding. So fingers crossed!

That's great, feeling fear about something and over coming it, you should be proud whatever the outcome.
