To add a child to a rail ticket to save money? F&F railcard (boring sorry!)

I have a family and friends railcard. I am going to London in the summer, alone. If I buy a ticket for myself the cost is £16 more than buying for myself and a child (who is not coming). I cannot find anything in the T&C to stop me doing this - is it ok?

no it is not.

Family & Friends Railcard Terms & Conditions:

2.10. Fraudulent applications and fraudulent use of Railcards and Railcard discounted tickets may lead to criminal prosecution.

I heard a radio play about this once. The woman carried a (well wrapped I imagine) baby doll with her in a moses basket so she could use the family railcard

My friend made her son take his twelve year old brother with him on a university open day because otherwise the train fare was going to be £180 more expensive. Grin

🤣

Friend of mine had one of these. She was picking up her child from an event, and had bought return tickets for them both, and had forgotten about the terms of the card. She just had to pay the full fare, when it was discovered, and buy a single ticket for herself.

And this is one of the many problems with train travel in the uk... how on earth can it be significantly cheaper to buy a ticket for two people than it is to buy a ticket for one person?! We live in the midlands. Often have weekend breaks in London, always drive as it's loads cheaper to drive at park then use the tubes than it is to get a train. It's crazy!

Clever thinking!

Absolutely loving all these stories of kids dragged across the UK to save their parents money 😂😂😂

What the rail companies claim is fraud and what a court of law would consider fraud are not one and the same.

It is not fraud. It is a breach of the terms and conditions. They are not the same.

there were also those mega tickets where you eg bought a cheap ticket from London to Southampton. A couple got out at Eastleigh (shorter journey) and were effectively treated as if they didn't have a ticket at all and made to pay the full price! Mad!

The rail companies in the UK are completely mad. Read the UK Rail forums - it is very enlightening about how they feel about passengers.

@yellowsuninthesky

I agree it's a breach of the terms with the sole purpose of a receiving a discount, which should not apply.

Fraud is an intentionally deceptive action designed to provide the perpetrator with an unlawful gain. I don't understand why this is not fraud, please can you explain.
