Do I need to write these cards?

Finishing my placement on my PGCE very soon, I'm asking on here for some advice. Do I need to write a card to every child to give to them on my last day. If I'm being truthful I can't be bothered and I don't really care as I'll never see those children again after that last day. However, my gut says I need to do something as a leaving gift so I will definitely do something to say farewell to the children. Perhaps chocolate/sweets?

Check your school's policy. Our school doesn't allow class gifts. Previous schools I used to give a book to each child. Pgce placements a pencil/stationery item and little chocolate. But if you don't want to, of course you don't have to!

SBAM · 25/05/2022 19:46

How old are the kids and how long have you been teaching them?
Cards seem like a lot of effort that small children aren’t likely to appreciate, but I bet they’d all be happy with a mini bag of haribo/lollipop or something similar.

HarrietSchulenberg · 25/05/2022 19:49

Nah, no way! A nice, big card that can be stuck on the wall till the end of the year, and maybe some small treats that everyone can share.

ScootsMcHoy · 25/05/2022 19:57

No, you don't need to do anything at all.

nokidshere · 25/05/2022 19:58

30 cards to small children who will put them in their bags and leave them there for the rest of the year then they will get chucked out with the rest of the rubbish in their bags. What a waste of time and paper/card.

User354354 · 25/05/2022 19:58

You don't need to write an individual card. You could get them some sweets/bubble ect depending on age.

LunaLoveFood · 25/05/2022 20:10

A class card and drew book for their book corner would be nice.

This.

Get on TES and get a bookmark template. Use Microsoft Publisher to put in a picture or a pattern, books or air balloons or stars or whatever. “Keep reading/Keep flying high/You’ve been a superstar love from Miss X”. Print on school printers and whizz through a laminator. Cut out length ways. 10 minutes- done.

Blackcountryexile · 25/05/2022 20:25

I'd also suggest one big card and a couple of books for the class, if you know they have favourite books you can get another one by the same author or on a similar theme.

Cheerybigbottom · 25/05/2022 20:27

My son has been given a pencil and a pot of mini bubbles from placements in his school (separately). He's never had a card.

Don't bother, get a box of biscuits or chocs for class to share and say thanks to them all then.

This is awesome. My daughter would cherish this way more than a card.

Can't be bothered and don't really care? The signs of a truly fantastic teacher.

Agreed. My daughter was given one at the end of year 4 by a teaching assistant. She's now in year 9 and still has the bookmark.

That, and maybe a bag of Haribo, doesn't take much effort.

That's exactly what I was just about to write.....it's one thing not having the time to do it. It's another saying you can't be bothered don't really care as you won't see them again.

anothernamedoesntsmellsosweet · 25/05/2022 20:46

My dd is 20 and still has a bookmark a favourite teacher gave her at the end of the school year when she was 6. I think that's a great idea

grafittiartist · 25/05/2022 20:48

Postcards with a message on are easy to print, and then quickly handwriting child's name is quick?

RedPandaFluff · 25/05/2022 20:48

Yes, I found the "can't be bothered and don't really care" bit a little jarring too. The teachers I know work crazy hours and are really stressed; they do it because they are very much bothered and care very deeply!

Agree that you don't need to sit down and write cards, though.

Seasidefuntime · 25/05/2022 21:09

I doubt the kids would give a toss given that you have a don’t care and can’t be bothered attitude towards them.

Concestor · 25/05/2022 23:26

Your attitude sucks and I hope you never teach any of my children.

Just do a printed "card" on paper that you can cut out, six to a sheet of A4, and take some haribo in.

I can't believe you don't care at all about the children, that's so upsetting.

iluvsummer · 25/05/2022 23:36

Thank goodness you’re (hopefully) not the student I’ve got in my class who’s leaving soon. The children have loved having her and so have I and she’s worked her socks off to do a great job. If she had your attitude I’d be disgusted and quite frankly hope that no school would employ her. You clearly have no idea how much extra workload having a student entails for a class teacher or the SLT and how unsettling it can be for children to be taught by their class teacher AND someone who is training to be a teacher! This is not the profession for you to be entering with the attitude you’ve just displayed here!

Porcupineintherough · 25/05/2022 23:41

I guess these kids were just another stepping-stone on your path to glory OP.

I think the bookmark thing is nice but I am the same as you and can't see the point of cards. Ignore those saying you don't care about the children. I adore children and still think about children I used to teach but you are just being practical. Why would you care about cards that will most likely be binned within a few days.

Beautifulmonster87 · 26/05/2022 12:15

‘Can’t be bothered as you don’t care’
nice teacher you are! You sound delightful

PaddingtonBearStareAgain · 26/05/2022 12:16

OP doesn't care about cards though, they say - I don't really care as I'll never see those children again after that last day.
