To send frankfurter sausages in DS lunchbox

He doesn’t eat sandwiches, wraps etc.

I want him to eat.
I know he eats these, so is it acceptable? The other thing I thought of was cooked cold pizza slices.

I will add salad bits too and fruit etc.

Choking hazard? I didn't even know that!

They're the same diameter as a child's windpipe - so you need to cut them lengthways like cherry tomatoes and grapes so they can't plug the gap.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 25/05/2022 19:23

Grapes, cherry Tom's, meat balls , sausages and marshmallows are the worst choking hazards. I've always just cut them all length ways

Caspianberg · 25/05/2022 19:29

Does he prefer warm food? Maybe a small food flask and then he can take can take
beans, sausage and bean casserole, tomato veggie pasta, meatballs or whatever he likes

StressedMumm1e · 25/05/2022 19:32

You could put some heated frankfurters in an insulated lunch box and some hot dog buns.

PinkSyCo · 25/05/2022 20:19

By ‘send’ I presume you mean ‘put?’ If so, frankfurters are high in saturated fats and salt, so not an ideal food for a child to eat daily but once a week would be ok I guess.

Lots of alternatives to try.. not sure frankfurters are filling or healthy..
cold pasta
cold pancakes with fruit
quorn sausages
quorn sausage rolls
pork sausage rolls
pork sausages
Scotch eggs
bread sticks/chopped veg and hummus or cream cheese

I say this as a mother of a fussy DS who now eats a lot better!

Sausage rolls are scotch eggs are healthier than Hot Dogs? OK then…

OverByYer · 25/05/2022 20:28

I used to send mine in with frankfurters in baguettes with a bit hollowed out for their lunches they loved them

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 25/05/2022 20:32

I'm sure it's ok. Maybe not every day though. Could you try cold pork sausages? Might be marginally better.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 25/05/2022 20:33

AbsolutelyLoveIy · 25/05/2022 18:23

Can’t you at least get him vegetarian sausages which won’t go off? I had a dodgy sausage off a stall last week and was in the toilet half an hour later

Food poisoning is unlikely to show up within 30 minutes

ChickensandCows · 25/05/2022 20:34

@CreamteainCornwall IF IT HASNT ALREADY BEEN SAID PLEASE PUT THEM IN CUT LENGTHWAYS TO AVOID CHOKING! And it's absolutely fine, nothing wrong with them at all. Why the fuck do people always suggest Hummus on mumsnet! The majority of people let alone kids don't like it. It stinks and is nothing like a sausage!

nearlyspringyay · 25/05/2022 20:39

Cut them lengthways and then chop into pasta. If he doesn't want to eat the pasta he can eat the hot dogs.🤷‍♀️

I don't know anyone who doesn't like hummous, particularly kids. It used to be a wanky thing now it's a bog normal thing to feed kids. Stop shouting!!!!

Brieandcamembert · 25/05/2022 20:42

Oh please don't feed your child Heavily processed fat filled junk for lunch.

There must be whole foods he can eat?

LakieLady · 25/05/2022 20:43

You've made me really fancy frankfurters now, OP - not the tinned ones, but the Herta ones.

Most unreasonable! 😉

rocketfromthecrypt · 25/05/2022 18:50

Why would pork sausages be any 'healthier' than frankfurter?

Very little on this list is healthy .

I sometimes put hotdogs in or cold sausages as a treat instead of a wrap, my kids are always excited when it's a sausage for their lunch! If they didn't eat wraps I wouldn't have a problem with hotdogs or sausages. What about roast chicken as an alternative for a healthier option?

sashadasher · 25/05/2022 22:11

I use to warm em up ,heat a small flask with hot water and pop em straight in there and they stayed hot till lunch time.If things didnt look right or weren't at right temp for him hd wouldnt eat em, it went beyond fussy. He would happily go 3 weeks plus without anything. He had SEN
He's grown older his diet has improved alot, though he is still stick thin,he has a much more balanced diet.If I could see into the future when I would be pulling my hair out then I would say go with flow and relax!

Yeah I bet ops never thought about giving him healthier alternatives that he will eat 🤔

ODFOx · 25/05/2022 22:15

OP, bockwurst are 90% meat, unlike uk sausages, so I really wouldn't worry about the reputation that hotdogs have; good quality hotdogs are good, poor quality hotdogs less do.

With a similar, but denser texture, and something your DS might like for a while, have you tried the smoked pork sausage sold in some supermarkets but also branded by Mattesons? It's great sliced into salad, in pasta, on a pizza, or toasted whole like a Scandinavian polse and eaten with veg or in a giant hot dog bun.
