The Magus by John Fowles. Set on a mysterious Greek island and full of intrigue, but also it evokes the place brilliantly. The ending is a bit....average...but the rest of the book is superb.

But the film is terrible - don't go by that.

Also anything by Daphne du Maurier (except perhaps 'Don't Look Now' if you're heading to Venice!!!)

What kinds of things do you like, romance, crime, historical fiction? My absolute favourites for holidays are Georgette Heyer, Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Sophie Hannah, but there's obviously a historical/crime theme going there!

Well obviously no idea what sort of books you like but i have just come back from a holiday and these are the ones I took:

Anxious People by Fredrik Backman - very good read, several unexpected twists.

Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord by Louis de Berniere - if you haven't read the prequel then probably incomprehensible but really weird even if you have. TBH I didn't enjoy it much and felt quite let down by the ending

Fresh Hell by Rachel Johnson - I had read Notting Hell and Shire Hell so was expecting to enjoy this a a bit of light entertaining froth but I dound it tedious and dull.

Sense and Sensibility by Joanna Trollope - a modern retelling of the Jane Austen. Really enjoyed this, some of the characters less than believable but still a good read.

Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld - excellent read. A real page turner.

Not sure what your preferences are but I usually read more serious books and then on holiday I get through a load of chick lit which is a guilty pleasure for me! Sophie Kinsella, Marian Keyes etc!

I like to choose books set in the place I'm going to. Just adds an extra something.

I just read The Rabbit Factor - translated from Finnish, funny and entertaining. In the Fredrik Backman genre.

One of my absolute favourites is a really random one - Just for the summer by Judy Astley. I take it on holiday to Cornwall (where it's set) every year - it's about a group of 2nd home owners in a small Cornish village and their teenagers - it's really cosy and I just love it for some reason!

i also love Elin Hildebrand books - they are mostly set on Nantucket (where she lives) and she's really good at drawing you in and making you root for the characters. The Identicals, The matchmaker and Silver Girl are all really good, but I've read about 20 of her books and enjoyed them all.

I usually reread His Dark Materials on holiday.
