Can I send DS to school?

He’s 4 - feels a bit warm so checked temp, temp is 37.5

its not a temperature temperature but it is obviously warmer than usual so not sure what to do! Please advise (sorry for AIBU, posting for traffic as need to decide ASAP).

I think if he's warm enough to warrant checking his temperature generally that would suggest he shouldn't go on in but I'm unsure what actually made you check him if he's only warm when cuddling. That's about as warm as you get.

Dashdotdotdash · 25/05/2022 08:23

According to the NHS, a high temperature for children is 38 degrees plus. I'd check it again around now and decide based on that.

Seeline · 25/05/2022 08:24

It really depends what his normal temperature is.
I can feel rough with that sort of temp and DS could be really ill. I know it wouldn't have any impact at all on DH.

DressingGownofDoom · 25/05/2022 08:28

Send him in but prepare for a phone call to collect him again, could be something brewing.

SlowHorses · 25/05/2022 08:29

So your DS has no symptoms and wants to go to school, but you have used a digital thermometer and got a reading within normal and want to keep him off.

Is that right?

what the…

nearlyspringyay · 25/05/2022 08:41

It wouldn't even have occurred to me to take his temp, send him in.

Quickquestiontemp · 25/05/2022 16:53

He’s come home with a temp of 39 and a horrendous hacking cough so I wasn’t as precious as some posters thought:

also 37.5 isn’t a temp which is why I sent him in, but it IS nearly a degree warmer than usual and therefore quite clear to feel he’s a bit warmer to the touch, so I’m not sure why people were querying that aspect. Going to see doctor tomorrow.

his teacher apparently told another school mother “DS ALWAYS has a cough”, which makes me feel like she thinks I’m somehow negligent and has upset me (he’s weak Chested but absolutely does not ALWAYS have a cough!)

I hope he's not too unwell. I'm not sure it needs to take up a GP appointment though, unless there's some underlying issue you are worried about? Probably a day at home tomorrow and some calpol and he'll be right as rain.

girlmom21 · 25/05/2022 17:15

Why are you going to see a doctor tomorrow?

Just give him some water and get him to rest. There's no need to see a doctor for a 39 degree temperature and a cough.

Quickquestiontemp · 25/05/2022 17:16

@WindyKnickers

He is really not alright at all, I am definitely having him seen as he is susceptible to croup etc and the cough sounds horrendous/he never usually gets temperatures and 39 is pretty high. It’s a private paedatrician if that makes you feel better about it 🤔 only on MN does someone say you shouldn’t get your child checked out if they are unwell.

Have you done a lateral flow test on him? Sounds like classic covid symptoms. I expect that's what the doctor will tell you to do.

Quickquestiontemp · 25/05/2022 18:08

I haven’t because his school says we don’t need to and provided they don’t have d&v or a fever, and feel well enough, they can come in. His paediatrician won’t ask for this either, and we don’t have any lateral flows.

they didn’t have space, I explained his symptoms and the reception called back to say he had made space for us so I have to say I’m going to trust him rather than people on MN re whether or not he needs to be seen 😉

It's a business, of course they're going to take your money if you're happy to throw it at them.

DressingGownofDoom · 25/05/2022 18:23

Hope he feels better soon Flowers

Mulhollandmagoo · 25/05/2022 18:29

My daughter currently has a 39 temp (very unusual) and a cough, just Calpol cuddles and a close eye on her, hopefully she starts to feel better soon, it's not something I would see a GP for unless it was going on for days and days or her temp went over 40. He will be fine, kids pick up all kinds.

Negative LFT too.

Quickquestiontemp · 25/05/2022 20:52

DS on his way to a and e with DH as he’s struggling to breathe. Amazing how things can change in the space of a day with little ones

HSKAT · 25/05/2022 21:23

Omg op, I hope he is ok!
I was one who told you to send him and feel awful!
Kids can decline so quickly but they also pick back up so quickly.
Keep us updated Flowers

girlmom21 · 25/05/2022 22:10

Fingers crossed he just needs a nebuliser or something. They'll sort him out I'm sure Flowers
