To think DS sleeps too much?

DS turned 3 in January, as a baby he was a good sleeper and he was sleeping through from 7 months, although he'd still wake up at 6-6:30.

I try and put him to bed now at 7 although he hates sleeping in his toddler bed and refuses every night, so in the end he sleeps at about 8:30 in my bed. Sometimes he's still sleeping at 9am and if we have to go out somewhere I wake him up and then he falls asleep the pushchair. He is very active during the day and runs around a lot and doesn't seem tired.

But dies this sound like he sleeps too much?

No that's spot on for a 3 year old

ChickensandCows · 24/05/2022 12:58

Sounds fine but sort his bed out so he does want to sleep in there or you're making a rod for your own back ongoing.

God sounds lovely op.

Runorsleep · 24/05/2022 12:59

I think the fact that he is active means he is fine , if he was lethargic that would be a worry . He sounds like he’s fine. Does he eat well? I’m guessing he was formula fed, all of my friends who formula fed had sleepy kids who still remained sleepy when older and all my friends who bf had the opposite. Mine were all bf and it took them years to sleep through.
Enjoy all that sleep!

@Runorsleep theres no association that formula fed babies are better sleepers. I breastfed until 18 months. DD slept thru the night from 12 weeks, napped like a dream because we established a routine.

now at 21 months she sleeps 13-14 hours at night and naps about 2-3 hours during the day.

just saying for anyone else reading, it’s not necessarily breast fed vs formula that makes a difference

Yes I agree, my and my 3 siblings were BF and were always really good sleepers as babies/children/adults (lol) both min were FF and also were/are fantastic sleepers

RewildingAmbridge · 24/05/2022 13:13

DS was a bad sleeper , we swapped good toddler bed for a full size single around his third birthday and he sleeps like a dream now, doesn't want to get in bed with us (unless he's ill) , have you thought about changing his bed? Let him choose some bedding/a cushion etc and make a big fuss about his big boy bed, and start trying to shift his bed time earlier. DS goes to bed at 7pm and wakes up around 7:30am , he doesn't nap but will occasionally fall asleep in the car if we've had a particular active day.

Not to hijack the thread, but can I ask what routine you implemented? I have a 2mo who only naps in the day with a lot of coercion (feeding to sleep, rocking, carrier), and gets very cranky later in the evening. Night sleep is better, but don't think he's getting enough.

Feel free to PM!

Whoops wrong thread!

Marvellousmadness · 24/05/2022 15:13

He doesn't sleep too long
He goes to bed to late op!!!he is 3
Get some structure happening. And keep him in his own bed

No wonder he sleeps till 9 if he goes down at 8.30!?

Cinnabomb · 24/05/2022 15:59

@Calphurnia88 of course, but this is just what worked for us and it took a good few months to get into the rhythm. Some people find routines don’t suit their baby at all so each to their own, ours definitely needed routine and she thrives on it, but I respect others may be different.

we religiously followed wake windows (change depending on age) and based my life basically around her naps! White noise, dark room, even if contact napping then gradually began to put her down in her cot. I did feed to sleep for a long time but this hasnt seemed to cause problems. We also sleep trained when she was older which I would do again in a heartbeat, best thing we ever did but I know mumsnet thinks it’s the devils work 🤷‍♀️Might not be right for everyone but worked for us.

Beautifulmonster87 · 24/05/2022 16:02

Oh dear lord I am jealous. My 3.5 ds sleeps 730-5 every single day without fail.. sometimes wakes in the night and never naps.

Calphurnia88 · 24/05/2022 16:18

Thanks @Cinnabomb .

I've accepted that napping is something that I'm going to have to invest some serious time in. I've downloaded the Huckleberry app today which has already helped in terms of prompting nap times... Now just getting him to sleep she says whilst checking for the twentieth time if DC has nodded off in the carrier yet.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/05/2022 16:20

If you want to put him to bed at 7, you will have to wake him up earlier,

MissRainbowBrite · 24/05/2022 16:31

You definitely need to try and slowly shift his sleeping hours if you'd like him to sleep earlier in the evening. And once he's up for the day keep him up, no pushchair napping as that's why he's not going to sleep until late. You need to work on this now as when he starts school he will struggle if this pattern ingrains itself.
