To be really worried? DP gave kids off milk.

I might be over reacting and am willing to be told I am being unreasonable.

Dp gave the kids breakfast this morning, I was in the shower. I've come down to make a coffee, had a whiff of the milk and it stinks. My 4 year old said to me when I came down that the milk tasted yucky. But my other child appears to have eaten a lot more of his. He is at school and I am anxiously sitting here expecting a call any moment to tell me he has been sick or something.

It was fine yesterday but did not smell right today when I have sniffed it, I always sniff check milk even if I have just opened it (massively anxious about sickness etc) but DP is a little more carefree in that aspect I suppose.

AIBU to be worried (and a bit miffed with DP?)

They might get a stomach upset they might not, I wouldn't worry

Dilbertian · 24/05/2022 09:14

Probably OK. I cannot use milk if I can smell it at all, whereas others say it's fine and still use it. Other people's idea of milk gone off is a couple of days longer than mine and their dc are fine.

gamerchick · 24/05/2022 09:15

Probably nothing. It's not something I would stress about.

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/05/2022 09:16

There isnt really any way to know. They might get a bit sick, they might now. Really depends on the quantity and how off it was.

But a bowl of cereal really doesnt use much milk so I wouldnt be concerned. Even if they get sick, it'll be over in a day! Nothing to worry about.

Pootles34 · 24/05/2022 09:16

They'll be fine - it's perfectly ok to still use it, in the same way some recipes call for sour cream. I wouldn't choose to drink it personally, but it isn't bad for you.

FatEaredFuck · 24/05/2022 09:17

Yanbu to be annoyed with your husband, I woule be. Would he not listen to your kids when they said it tastes dreadful??

Having said that I wouldn't worry about them becoming poorly.

MagicTurtle · 24/05/2022 09:17

There's nothing you can do about it now so no point worrying. As pp says, they may get a tummy upset or they may be fine.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 24/05/2022 09:19

Well, worrying now won't change the outcome.

The likelihood is they'll be fine and if not, it'll be a slightly upset stomach at best.

JustALittleHelpPlease · 24/05/2022 09:19

Sour milk tends to be a more instant response! If it has been a little while then you are probably fine - even if they did react it would be "ejecting food stuff", it isn't something that will make them properly ill so try not to worry 🙂

SpaghettiSquash · 24/05/2022 09:22

They'll be fine.

Babdoc · 24/05/2022 09:23

Pootles34, recipes specify “soured” cream, not “sour”. They mean cream that has been turned by the addition of a little acid, not cream that has gone off and curdled due to pathogenic bacteria! You can buy it in supermarkets, it’s a safe product used in beef stroganoff for example.

JudgeRindersMinder · 24/05/2022 09:23

They’ll be fine. At worst maybe a mild upset tummy, which isn’t ideal, but there won’t be any lasting effects

MappyDappy · 24/05/2022 09:25

Thank you everyone thats really reassuring.

DH is always doing this - pushes milk to the limits and will drink it unless it actually has lumps in (I don't drink milk at all so I let him get on with it) - doesn't seem to make him ill.

AntonHeck · 24/05/2022 10:17

Old milk isn't dangerous. That's how cheese used to be made.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 24/05/2022 10:56

If you always sniff milk you are probably way more sensitive to it than your DH. It might not have tasted to great but won't do any harm

saraclara · 24/05/2022 11:06

My Polish relatives deliberately leave milk out to go sour because they like the taste of it!
So no, you needn't worry about the DCs getting ill. The same relatives have all so far lived into their late 90s!

darisdet · 24/05/2022 11:22

Extremely unlikely they'll be unwell.

MappyDappy · 24/05/2022 16:34

Hi guys thanks again for all the replies, so far, everyone appears fine and well, praying it stays that way!!

It did sort of smell like yoghurt to be honest

Even if does make them sick, oh well, no lasting harm done!

That's not what soured cream is.

Ejk1990 · 24/05/2022 16:50

I drink milk a few days gone and its never hurt me. I draw the line at chunky milk though 😅

Pootles34 · 01/06/2022 14:46

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 24/05/2022 16:42

That's not what soured cream is.

Not now, but that's how it used to be made - cream was left out and natural bacteria soured it.
