Cosy of living...increased in food, energy, petrol

Gmamaofboys13 · 23/05/2022 12:57

When will this end?

Every week things in the weekly shoo keep going up in cost. A loaf of bread from ASDA was 55p...now 70p, and that's happening with everything.

My gas and electricity has doubled, even though I'm using less.. it's more expensive to fill up my car.
What price increases others noticed?

Short answer...everything

Lima1 · 23/05/2022 13:00

I am in Ireland and it is gone crazy here. Normally DH does the weekly shopping but I did it this week as he was away. I went around the shops in a state of amazement/shock at the price increases. Its everything! I started in Tesco's but left and went to Aldi but it wasn't much better there.
I honestly dont know how people on tight budgets are managing.

EmmaStone · 23/05/2022 13:00

It will trickle down to everything as manufacturers are also suffering the increases. But I'm not sure where it ends, and suspect that may be why the govt is being quite quiet on the subject for now. We'll be due another utilities price cap increase in October, so there will be another big step up then. If the government provides the wrong kind of support, it could escalate into further inflation.

On a less serious note - I saw a fab bag while away in Spain - cost €129. The same bag here costs £169. I didn't buy the bag (in either country), but that's an enormous difference. What's causing that huge discrepancy?!? Import duties post Brexit?

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 23/05/2022 13:01

I’ve just done our weekly shopping. We normally spend £150 a week (above average income and allergies). Normally it would be £150ish, £100 pre- covid, today I carefully went through our full fridge and freezer and it was still £170. After half term I’m going to start shopping at Aldi again.

A big sign I’ve noticed is stuff on my local Facebook children’s stuff selling page just isn’t going even when it’s reasonably priced.

KangarooKenny · 23/05/2022 13:01

I’ve noticed that petrol is creeping back towards £1.70 a litre here.

danni0509 · 23/05/2022 13:03

I’ve noticed with Tesco lots of items I buy haven’t just gone up once, it’s every other week an extra 5/10/20p has been added.

Every blood thing 😫
Definitely noticed food going up constantly over the past few weeks especially. It's getting ridiculous!
I really feel for those on a low income who were already struggling trying to make ends meet before all this.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 23/05/2022 13:05

Bloody not blood 😂

junglejane66 · 23/05/2022 14:22

I know a lot has gone up. but petrol price rises dont really affect me as I only ever put £20 in

Sorry that's hilarious!!!

You do realise that £20 of petrol at £1.70 is not going to last anywhere near as long as £20 of fuel at £1.40!

So you're going to filling up more frequently. Of course it affects you!

There is no facepalm big enough.

Peradventure55 · 23/05/2022 14:34

@orwellwasright It's a joke

urrrgh46 · 23/05/2022 14:47

Absolutely everything! The 5p fuel duty drop has been wiped out as petrol is back up again anyway. Also we got plans and a quote for a loft extension in dec 2020/jan 21 or between lockdowns - can't quite remember exact month (had given birth nov '20!) anyway it was 50k. We didn't go ahead and are now thinking again about it. Revised quote by same person doing same work 63k. I fully expect the reason is increased costs across the board for the builder.

onthefencesitter · 23/05/2022 14:47

Bought a plate of duck rice at a food court (stall is actually a chain restaurant which has a stall in the food court)...used to be £10.50. Now its £11.50 and less duck.

We shop at Aldi, so i haven't noticed huge increases. Gas and electricity has doubled. TFL fares have increased but we only go to the office 3 X a week.

My taxi home was only £6, it hasn't gone up much at all, how is that possible with all the petrol price increases??

onthefencesitter · 23/05/2022 14:48

Also we are repainting the communal areas of my flat. The quotes for the same work have increased by a lot, we know as my DH is the director of the residents management company.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 23/05/2022 14:52

I’m a tight arse & shop in Lidl. Even that shopping has increased in cost, but reduced in packet volume! Shrinkflation and inflation all in one. Brilliant, thanks Brexit/Putin/Tories/whoever decided to shelve the 3 gen nuke power stations a decade ago/greedy shareholders (as infinitum).

onthefencesitter · 23/05/2022 14:52

@Gmamaofboys13 the independent bakery where i live has started charging £5 for a loaf of bread. I am not even kidding. my DH buys it once a week as he wants to support a local business and it amazes him that she can even charge so much. This is in north london so we are in the vicinity of some very affluent neighbourhoods but still...

Lex345 · 23/05/2022 14:54

I think the food and energy are the ones I am finding most worrying, as there is simply no alternative. Already very, very careful with the grocery shop.

I did enjoy the MP 30p meal story. Especially when 2 loaves of bread, 8 pints of milk and a sack of potatoes just cost £5.97. Hope they last 20 days 🙄

ifonly4 · 23/05/2022 14:58

I was somewhere a few days ago and realised they were charging £8.10 for 175ml glass of wine - that got us focused and we decided we didn't want a drink that much so left (and drank the water we were carrying!).

This is a joke, right? I know a joke like this saying that rising prices of petrol don't affect one as he always puts £50.00.

catscatscatseverywhere · 23/05/2022 15:01

I am so worried about rising prices that I am already feeling the effects of this stress in my body. My stomach and chest feel very tight and I know it's stress, because I am a healthy person.

A couple of weeks ago I bought fish and chips for 3 adults, from a place I have used semi regularly in the past. Total bill was up £9 from a prior identical order. We used to get a takeaway of some sort approx once per month. That won't be happening now. I can't justify it.

I am lucky in that I can pay my necessary expenses, but all "frivolous" spending is out. I genuinely don't know what people can do if they were already at their limit. I feel so bad for people in that situation.

Retail (and hospitality) are our biggest employers. We are a consumption driven service of economy. Our biggest industries are retail, hospitality and the City of London since we have lost manufacturing.

I hope the government is not hoping that the covid debt will be inflated away. Yes debt may be inflated away but this will destroy the man in the street.

BettySundaes · 23/05/2022 15:11

Butter up 20p this week and Sainsburys crumpets up from 35p to 50p. The cost of simple pleasures!
