Gel polish drilled off!

Hello - this is my first AIBU

I’ve been feeling pretty down a lot recently and one thing I’ve been trying to do is be kinder to myself and treat myself now and then.

for the first time I went to get shellac/gel nails. The woman in the salon said this would help me grow them and it has. But when I went back to get it off (booked as a soak off) and a new colour applied… she used a drill and drilled it off. There was no soaking! I said this at the time and she asked if it hurt and I said no and she said it was fine then.

I had 4 lots of gel Colour there over 2 months with it drilled off each time and after a really painful nail I asked for a regular polish. I got the soak off that day. And a regular polish applied.

Straight away I noticed one of my nails is extremely thin to the point it was constantly bending and it has eventually broken.

I've just taken the regular polish off all nails after 8 days and my nails are an absolute state. Different thicknesses all over with some dents, slashes and dimples and my right thumbnail appears to have a full layer of the gel base coat still on it. Plus’s they are horribly dry.

I've never had my nails done before so I just don’t know if this is a professional service or not?

AIBU to think I’ve been getting dodgy service?

I don't think any salons soak off now, the chemicals are harsh in comparison to a mini sanding machine.

what tosh

Only cheap Chinese type salons sand off.

Lavenderlast · 22/05/2022 21:40

Omg.

Honestly I’d stop messing around with your nails and book yourself in for a nice massage instead.

You can buy no more gel on Amazon, it softens the gel so you can scrape it off,you just need to lightly file the surface before applying.

Absolute rubbish. No decent salon would ever drill/sand nails off!

LadyPoison · 22/05/2022 23:37

I do file off my own gel nails with a coarse nail file but I only use my electric rotary drill on my toe nails.

I'm far too impatient to wait for the acetone to dissolve them and that has its own problems too.

I would never allow someone to drill my builder gel off. I get it applied to my natural nails and when I have it removed (soaked off) my nails are in brilliant condition.

They're an electrical nail file that roll against the gel not touching the natural nail the manicurist leaves 1cm before buffing the last of the gel off.
Sold as a manicurist kit.
Very popular.
Not a drill.

Whose nails are over 1cm thick? 😳

YANBU but this is sadly expected and not a surprise. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone getting their nails done for years and coming out of it with healthier nails as a result. It’s a lie to keep you coming back. I have however heard of many nail beds damaged, nails removed, infections, permanent ridges etc.

Bunty55 · 23/05/2022 00:59

Stay away from those salons where they wear masks. It's to stop them from inhaling the dust they create with those drills.

I always think they are sweat shops and the staff looked overworked and unhappy

I was told the same many time that shellac/ gels help the nails grow and keep them in good condition

Absolute lies in my case! Same as you OP my nails were paper thin and tearing apart.

I now leave them well alone!

It helps mine grow but I do have to use strengthener on them as it does weaken them, no matter how well they are removed.

And I only ever use places that soak them off.

polkadotneedsachange · 23/05/2022 21:08

When mine were drilled off they definitely drilled down to almost my natural nail and then soaked for short time then drilled again. My nails were so bendy it knocked me sick
