Raheem Bailey

Posted here as I couldn't find this on any other thread. I can't add an link to the story but if you search Raheem Bailey you'll get the full story.

In short Raheem was bullied since September at his new secondary school which resulted in him having a finger amputated last week trying to escape from the bullies. He was bullied because he is black.

That poor child, what he went through. At school where he should have been safe. Where were the adults at that school? His mum went in the day before to speak about his bullying and was reassured they would handle it.

I feel the school has let him down and need to be held accountable. No child should be afraid to go to school. I feel all schools should be held accountable when there is bullying and it carries on. It is the job of the staff to ensure any type of bullying stops. I work in a school and know this is not easy. But some staff really don't care and see name calling as harmless banter.

I guess my AIBU is I believe that schools are as much to blame as the bullies when they are repeatedly told about a child being bullied and it carries on?

That poor boy

Pandarinio · 22/05/2022 11:58

If it was a workplace it wouldn't be acceptable so I don't know why it's tolerated from kids.

MoobsAreNotBoobs · 22/05/2022 12:22

This is absolutely heartbreaking. Poor boy and his mum. It will be interesting to see what the school investigation brings, this racial bullying has been going on since September! What had the school done to protect Raheem and deal with these bullies? Clearly not enough. There’s a gofundme set up if anyone is able to donate.

FindingTheImpossible · 22/05/2022 14:21

@Pandarinio I agree.

@MoobsAreNotBoobs I don't think the school will make the outcome of the investigation public. Hope I'm wrong.

Let down by the school but also the health service. The poor boy may still have his finger intact if he’d been blue lighted straight to a big hospital. The story is really sad.

Andromachehadabadday · 23/05/2022 07:43

It so upsetting. My dd was bullied, we tried everything and even moved her school. 9 months later the bully was moved to her school on a managed move. The new school said they could stop the move but wouldn’t allow the bullying to start again. It did. We went through it all again.he threw Scissors at her, threatened her. All sorts. Their class teacher was supportive, but the head banned her from discussing it with me. I went into school one morning to sort another issue and my dd was assaulted by him and needed an ambulance.

They were in year 6. The police got involved and he was actually charged. The school still didn’t really want to do anything. We had a meeting with the police the joint head teachers (who had a legal rep with them). It was only at that point they took action.

When they moved to high school he tried to start again. I went up once and the Head teacher and the community police officer had him and his family in once. It’s stopped and never happened again. So some schools are effective.

But I will never forgive those schools or teachers for what they allowed my child to go through while they kept talking about his rights to an education. His parents were a shitshow and hold a lot of the blame and I hope I never see them again.

She is 18 now and fine. But it was horrific.

Breaks my heart, every time I hear these stories. So many people letting kids down.

I'm amazed and sickend that we still have racism in schools. Surely that rediculous attitude should jave died off by now!

I'm white but a lot of my family are black. Reading stories like this makes me so sad for them, to think what they go through even now!

If i heard my dc even mutter a racist slur, I would hit the fucking roof. There is no excuse, we as adults need to stamp this out for the next generation.

Beck01 · 23/05/2022 10:08

Utterly sickening. I have followed his mum on instagram for further updates.

Racism is very common in society unfortunately, it’s no surprise that it’s in schools. But schools should have zero tolerance for it.

FindingTheImpossible · 23/05/2022 22:57

@birthdaytou I hadn't thought about that before but you're right. The medical staff would have known the longer his finger wasn't treated the greater the risk of losing it.

@Andromachehadabadday It is awful when your child is bullied at school and as a parent feeling helpless. My son was bullied as well but the Deputy Head was fantastic and really helped. It makes a world of difference having that help.

And for those who voted I am being unreasonable could you explain why?

IME schools are useless at dealing with bullying. Part of the problem is that teachers who do try to deal with it get no support from management or the Education Authority. Bullying in one form or another is endemic in our society and it starts in school.
I read this story today and it is absolutely heart breaking.
These days the bullies have weapons and phones. It must be absolutely terrifying to be a victim. That poor kid was in fear of his life.

www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/police-not-taking-any-action-26206187

So after 10 months in which staff and students were threatened to the point the school was closed and security was on site when it reopened and affecting Year 11 exam preparation, young children (and staff) were interviewed by police under caution in such stressful circumstances that one of the children was repeatedly sick, CCTV was reviewed and a very thorough investigation completed, no racism against Raheem was found.

The media, celebrities and people who jumped to conclusions have a lot to answer for. Many people, as seen here in this thread, projected their own issues which were NOT the case in this incident.

It was a tragic accident caused by the child wearing a ring and trying to climb a fence rather than waiting for a gate to be opened.

A very public apology is owed to this small valleys community.
