I have been considering getting chickens. With my recent Google searches in mind Facebook has suggested lots of chicken related videos. One of them was of a woman who found that under her chicken coop was a mice nest.Mice of different ages all running around (actually some looked cute). She then went to explain how she got rid of them humanely. 99 percent of the comments were of people saying why bother should have fed them to chickens, set her dog or cat on them or my favourite pour concrete on them.
Also in news today a man who deliberately drove over family of ducks.
I have just recently had a baby so I am softer than usually but AIBU to think this is not normal human way of thinking? Are majority of people happy to kill (inhumanely) animals they don't like?

People generally don't care much about animals (other than cats and dogs). If they did, they wouldn't eat them.

orwellwasright · 22/05/2022 11:49

I think coming away from shite on Facebook when you're feeling sensitive is wise.

R00K · 22/05/2022 12:01

There's a world of difference between somebody making a (sick) joke and actually carrying out the act.

Yawn.

Smileyaxolotl1 · 22/05/2022 12:13

I think most people are ok with killing vermin but most want it done humanely.

Finalcountdowntoourtripaway · 22/05/2022 12:15

Imo people (not all) have become so entitled that giving thought /regard to an animal is low down on their priorities...
Quite sickening some things in the news that become our 'normal' to hear about.

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/05/2022 12:15

I don’t think it’s an uncommon attitude, no: “pest” control solutions including pouring boiling water onto ant nests; covering snails and slugs with salt, poisoning or glue-trapping mice and rats are all pretty mainstream.

I have occasionally caught two or more of our ducks squabbling over a live mouse or frog they’ve found somewhere and pulling it in every which direction like a tug of war rope and it’s strangely fascinating to watch, if a bit gruesome. I probably wouldn’t actively give them the mouse or frog myself, though.

Gizacluethen · 22/05/2022 12:17

Some people genuinely believe the earth belongs to us and every other animal exists for our own amusement.

Yawn.

This comment just proves you're one of those people.

a motorway locally had to be shut for a short while recently while a family of ducks and ducklings was rescued from the carriageway. Someone posted on the polices post about it that they should have been left to be ran over.

some people just have a twisted way of thinking sadly.

TenRedThings · 22/05/2022 12:25

Some people care about squashed ducklings and eat meat.

Boood · 22/05/2022 12:29

I care a lot about squashed ducklings, but I have to say I’d be entirely happy to set my cat on a nest of mice. Exercise and mental stimulation for her, rodent problem sorted for me, and a completely expected natural end for the mice. Can’t see a problem.

HikingforScenery · 22/05/2022 12:29

Most people I know wouldn’t think twice about squashing a mosquito, a spider, a wasp, etc.

im not a huge fan of animals in general myself, tbh.
I wouldn’t go around killing them but I’m not particularly bothered if I find out they’ve been killed.
Would try to help an injured/tired bee or call for help for an injured squirrel, etc but if they die, c’est la vie.

QuestionableMouse · 22/05/2022 12:34

Mice and rats don't stand a chance in my house or garden, with a Jack Russell and two cats. Can't say it's something I'd encourage though but seeing as next door have a filthy yard I'm glad to have some pest control.

Can remember a friend's dad bragging about swerving to run over wildlife on the roads. This was in 1999/2000 and I can remember thinking what a sick fucker he was. Got his comeuppance though cause he swerved to hit a dog on the road, crashed into an undercover police car and was charged with dangerous driving.

Georgeskitchen · 22/05/2022 12:35

I hate deliberate animal cruelty but humane rodent control is necessary. Most farms have cats to keep the rodent problem under control. That's nature.
As for the motorway police stopping the traffic for the ducks, well done them and shame on the disgusting specimens who wanted to run them over

100% this. I get so wound up when I hear the phrase "we're a nation of animal lovers" we're not at all most people like pets and think they like animals when the evidence is to the contrary.

I remember going to longleat and after the safari bit in the car park was a pulled pork truck with a massive queue. Baffles me how some animals are meant to be admired and others eaten.
