9 hours sleep is too little for a 4 year old?

DD sleeps 9hours 15 minutes a night on average. No naps. She can do more sometimes but not often, this seems to be how she is naturally wired.
It's much less than her friends of the same age (so I hear) a I'm considering the possibility of ADHD due to this and a couple of other factors ie. AIBU?

I wouldn't jump straight to ADHD just on the basis of not meeting much sleep.

HSKAT · 22/05/2022 10:41

What's the other factors?

Like everyone else, some kids only need certain amount of hours.

again2020 · 22/05/2022 10:45

Thanks.

Other factors are seeming to have little sense of danger, always extremely active and the teacher said she wasn't the best at concentrating on a task and prefers to move from task to task.

It’s Mumsnet, all children are SEN.

she sounds 4 to me.

what time is she going to bed? Maybe she’d benefit from a stricter routine.

Sounds normal

Seems like a normal 4 year old tho op

DS never slept the 12 hours unless he was unwell

he would sleep around 10 hours he would never fight sleep either if he is tired he sleeps so a good sleeper just not as long as some children need

he sleeps more now they he is a rapidly growing teenager

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/05/2022 11:18

Sounds normal. Don’t jump to conclusions re ADHD. As a pp said all kids on mumsnet have a neuro developmental disorder or SEN - in reality they don’t. It’s natural variation

Op most 4 year olds jump between tasks. Please remember our expectations of reception age children in this country are ludicrous. Most European countries don't start formal learning until 7.

Sleep differs child to child .9 hours doesn't seem hugely unusual to me

Namechanger965 · 22/05/2022 11:58

Jumping from task to task is normal at 4. Some children will have longer attention spans but 4 is very young, in lots of countries they wouldn’t start formal education for a couple of years. So I wouldn't worry about that.

That amount of sleep isn’t ‘ideal’ for that age but if she doesn’t seem tired I wouldn’t worry. DD needs a full 12 hours but often doesn’t get it, she’s usually somewhere between 9 and 11 hours. She is under assessment for ASD due to other factors but the lack of sleep for her is more of a ‘switching off’ issue, she struggles to wind down and settle, particularly if she’s anxious about something. But again, this can be completely normal at this age.
