Pregnant for 9 months not 10

Ok, I am pretty sure I am being unreasonable but sure anyway!

It has always bugged me when friends have said 'it's actually 10 months you're pregnant for' with a sort of in the know grin. I had 1 in particular go on about it when she was pregnant that all of the world has had it wrong since we started recording these things. But it's not. It is 9 months. I have heard several other women saying it in different settings.

I get where her maths is coming from 40 weeks/ 4 = 10 months.

BUT most months do not stop at 28 days.

If that was the case 52 weeks/ 4 = 13 months I am not aware of a 13th month in the year.

22nd May to 22nd June you would say is one month away, not one month and 3 days. Those 3 days p/m over a pregnancy adds up to 27 days.

My LMP was October, my baby is due this July, by my count that is 9 months.

Yes I know little to be worrying about and yes I can get pedantic. No I do not and have not ever countered a pregnant woman who says pregnancy is 10 months IRL.

Youre not even pregnant for the first two weeks.

DropYourSword · 22/05/2022 08:38

I only ever count pregnancy in weeks. Counting it in months just doesn't compute in my brain!

SpiderVersed · 22/05/2022 08:38

The first two weeks you are “pregnant” you haven’t even ovulated, so it’s really only 38 weeks anyway.

Svara · 22/05/2022 08:38

It's only 38 weeks from conception (not LMP) to due date, and you don't even know straight away. If you added a week overdue it's still only 39 weeks, which is 9 months exactly.

SofiaSoFar · 22/05/2022 08:39

They are being thick to equate months with exactly 4 weeks. Did these friends go to school?

A month is 4.333 weeks long on average.

itsgettingweird · 22/05/2022 08:39

I've never even heard anyone say it's 10 months.

But I also wouldn't worry what others day. Just say X number of weeks or your due date/ month.

Youre not even pregnant for the first two weeks.

Crap, I had included that in my rant somewhere but must have deleted it! I deleted a good chunk as I was rambling 😂

Look if these women choose to be stupid, let them. We have many articles online and helpful guides to explain it. I just fear for their children, if they can't work that out the kids have no hope.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 22/05/2022 08:36

Youre not even pregnant for the first two weeks.

Then you often don't know for another two weeks.

Andromachehadabadday · 22/05/2022 08:44

I worked with a Japanese woman, years ago, who said that in Japan they talk about 10 months. Not 9. Which caused some confusion.

PrawnToast5 · 22/05/2022 08:44

Isn't it in reference to lunar months? That was my understanding of some people considering it 10 months

Cuckoo48 · 22/05/2022 08:45

A human pregnancy (38 weeks; you're not even pregnant for the first two of the 40) is c.266 days. That is nowhere near ten months!
I know when both of mine were conceived, they were both more or less on time according to due date and turned up around a week short of 9 calendar months.

Pandarinio · 22/05/2022 08:47

It's much easier to count it in weeks anyway. And most people I know have either gone over or under.

kittensinthekitchen · 22/05/2022 08:47

Yes! It's annoying.

Like when someone says "My child is 2.7 years old". They typically mean 2 years and 7 months, but writing it as 2.7 actually means nearly 2 years 8 and a half months.

Drivingmisspotty · 22/05/2022 08:49

I wouldn’t worry too much about it but is the ‘knowing look’ because they are talking about lunar months/menstrual cycles/ spooky feminine months that only women with their mysterious ways know about?

Irishfarmer · 22/05/2022 17:24

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that pregnancy is not 10 months. I thought I was going to be shot down. One who insisted on it being 10 months is an actual friend and i wouldn't say she's stupid a bit alternative maybe. Others I've heard on about maybe aren't the brightest buttons and hear 40 weeks.

I'm 38 weeks pregnant but had a miscarriage just before this pregnancy so I feel like I've been pregnant for the last 11 months...

Sorry you went through a miscarriage💖

I know someone who also had a miscarriage (she was about 5/6 weeks pregnant) she actively said she was 11 months pregnant. Not felt like it. That she WAS 11 months pregnant Confused

Georgeskitchen · 22/05/2022 19:31

40 weeks from LMP to EDC is how they measure it
But as we all know the baby will come when it's good and ready🤣

Toottooot · 22/05/2022 19:34

Maybe they are pregnant for 10 months of February’s 🤣🤣

IstayedForTheFeminism · 22/05/2022 19:38

I was pregnant for about 6738383 years with DS2. At least it felt like it.
In reality it was 41+3
(Or 39+3 if you allow for the "your not pregnant for the first 2 weeks. Which no one did when I had babies)

But yes. Pregnancy is on average (based on how the NHS count it) 40 weeks, or 9 months.

Thank you.
If I go overdue I can see myself having a "I've been pregnant for 11 months, get this baby OUT" moment Grin

Youseethethingis1 · 22/05/2022 19:42

Anywhere from 37 to 42 weeks is considered normal full term so it's bit of daft thing to discuss in absolutes anyway.

@AwkwardPaws27 sorry about your mc 💔I hadn't considered that. I had my last MC Aug 2021, 8 weeks in. Got pregnant again in October. No wonder I feel like I've been pregnant forever!! You're nearly there 😁
