I usually take 30 mg Amitriptyline at night as I suffer with night time joint pain due to fibromyalgia and hyper mobility, in addition to poor sleep.

I used to suffer with terrible restless legs which the medication has eased drastically.

My prescription has been delayed and I have not taken the tablets for 3 nights.

Aside from an increase in pain, the restless legs tonight is almost having me in tears. It's like the very beginning of cramp constantly in my thighs, calves and feet.

Does anyone have any home remedies I could try? I have slept so poorly for the last two nights without the Amitriptyline. I'm exhausted and I I just want a comfortable night 😞

I took magnesium for it in pregnancy and it really helped.

It lasted a while after pregnancy and at that point I found alcohol before bed made it worse.

Sometimes I got up and stretched in the middle of the night. Touching toes in particular, stretching my back as well as legs was good.

Mine was linked to iron deficiency, as with some previous posters. Worth getting your ferritin and vitamin D levels checked. I also take magnesium supplements.

I take magnesium (you need to buy a good quality one), the warmer nights will make it worse, so I'm planning to also get the magnesium spray.

DH has an EMS machine. He places his feet on the marked foot shaped areas and electric pulses are sent though his feet ankles and legs. It has worked wonders, his legs no longer ache after gym sessions or long bike tides and it has sorted out his night time cramp and restless legs.

He fell onto a stone floor and placed the pads which come with the machine onto his badly bruised shoulder and received great relief and fast recovery.
The actual model we have is no longer available from Amazon, but there are plenty of others.

The machine is about the size of a robot floor cleaner therefore impractical to take on holiday, so he has also bought a small version, whose foot contact area rolls up and works well, though less powerful than our original. This one costs about £18, well worth a try, OP.

If you have polycotton sheets, or other synthetic material, change them for 100 percent cotton. It won't cure it but you will feel the difference.

Try a peppermint oil or gel, applied to your feet and lower legs.

I feel your pain. I take pramipexole for restless legs, and have been on the maximum dose for many years. I'll likely have to take a break from them at some point, and dread it. If I miss a dose, it's unbearable. I take melatonin at night, just 3mg to help me nod off, but sometimes taking an extra one or two can help when my legs are giving me extra bother.

I take pramipexole too at the max dose and have the same feelings of worry about when the time comes to take a break from them. I take gabapentin for another condition too which takes the edge off the restlessness.

I feel your pain, rls is a miserable condition 😢 xx

Just following on from what @CPL593H and @NailArtAddict said, DH takes quinine tablets at night, you can get them on prescription. Definitely helps, though not completely.

As others have mentioned, iron deficiency can be a cause (DH has this as a result of being in end stage kidney failure), so worth checking ferritin levels – you can have an iron infusion if necessary.

Well the restless legs are still here. I've been off work for 2 days now due to a combination of really heavy bleeding (I had endo surgery last year and got it all under control or so i thought so I'm gutted), poor sleep from the restless legs and now I have fluid around my left knee.

Put me in the bin. I give up!

I'm wondering if the restless legs is hormone related given the sudden bleeding?

Anyway. DH is WFH today so at least I have company. He's a good egg and will make me tea and rub my one fat knee.

Oh just got say despite months (and I mean literally months) of constant bleeding last year my iron and ferritin levels have been fine throughout. My GP said it was a miracle given the circumstances.

Magnesium!! My mum suffered terribly but magnesium cured it.

She takes a high quality supplement and uses magnesium oil on her legs at night.

I have MS and I have also thought before I would cut my own legs off to get ride of the pain and restless legs. I gave up amytriptaline as it made me groggy but magnesium spray is amazing. I would highly recommend.

deflatedbirthday · 24/05/2022 08:59

I will definitely be looking for some Magnesium. I'm beside myself with it now. I've got it this morning badly. I'm elevating my legs for the knee swelling but I cannot keep them still.

Having to watch shite TV to keep me distracted.
