To ask what you would think of a 5% pay rise in the current climate?

Would you be pleased to get this?

Or annoyed because it's below inflation?

Accepting because money doesn't grow on trees and something is better than nothing?

Would the type of employer make any difference? (Ie if it was in a struggling industry or not-for-profit where funds were tight vs a big profitable company?)

Just curious about people's views, and wondering what the "average" increase has been for people in recent months.

I work in higher education and would be delighted with 5%.

Mumwantingtogetitright · 21/05/2022 16:03

Thanks all for your views. Seems that most of you would be satisfied or pleased with 5%, despite it being below the rate of inflation.

Yes, I'd be happy.

It's much better than most people will be getting.

ilovesooty · 21/05/2022 16:16

When I left my paid employment to go fully self employed in 2019 I hadn't had a pay rise since 2012 and even that was a regrade, not a pay rise. If I were still in my role I'd be ecstatic to get a 5% pay rise.

ShinyMe · 21/05/2022 16:17

I would be over the moon. Public sector, haven't had a pay rise in several years, and definitely not getting one for another year or two, I'll be lucky to not be made redundant.

Starburst8 · 21/05/2022 16:19

I havent had a pay rise since 2017 so I wouldn't grumble at 5%

starlingdarling · 21/05/2022 16:21

I don't know anyone who's getting 5% or more at the moment.

Oblomov22 · 21/05/2022 16:25

I'd be very happy with that.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 21/05/2022 16:31

Would be over the moon with it! Just had a pay cut😕

MotherOfRatios · 21/05/2022 16:31

My current organisation which I'm leaving due to toxicity pay rise put the CEO has given herself a pay rise
The pay scale is at my current organisation do not make sense either it feels as though she pays you how much she likes you.

hopeishere · 21/05/2022 16:33

We're getting a consolidated £1000 I think so 5% would be great!! I'm actually going to work out on Monday what £1000 will translate to in my pocket per month. Fuck all I suspect.

balalake · 21/05/2022 16:33

I'd be surprised and say thank you.

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 21/05/2022 16:33

Well, another here public sector, so we had a take-home-pay cut from last month on what has been over a decade of pay freezes.

so I’d take 5%.

Pushkinia · 21/05/2022 16:38

In the past decade I’ve had a pay rise of 2% in total (public sector) so 5% would feel like I’ve won the lottery!

RewildingAmbridge · 21/05/2022 16:41

As above in the past 13 years I've had a 1.6% pay rise also public sector, so 5% at once would feel like Christmas

Bayleaf25 · 21/05/2022 16:42

Also HE and 3%.
5% sounds pretty decent (although admittedly still won’t cover the cost of inflation but I can’t imagine many businesses giving more than that at the moment)

LakieLady · 21/05/2022 16:43

I'd be delighted! I don't think we've had a rise of more than 2% in the 15 years I've been with this employer.

Staff on the lowest grades got a bit more. If they hadn't, they'd have been on below NMW.

Penguintears · 21/05/2022 16:44

I'm only getting 1% despite being a high performer and company profits increasing by 25%. I would be very happy with 5%.

yossell · 21/05/2022 16:46

There aren't going to be many places able to match 9% inflation with corresponding pay rises.

PinkBuffalo · 21/05/2022 16:57

NoSquirrels · 21/05/2022 15:35

Think I’m getting fuck all, so 5% would be delightful, frankly.

Same

RhythmStick · 21/05/2022 17:05

Think I'd say thanks, and be grateful for it.

Gazelda · 21/05/2022 17:08

Is this what you've been offered OP? How do you feel about it?

Mumwantingtogetitright · 21/05/2022 17:16

Gazelda · 21/05/2022 17:08

Is this what you've been offered OP? How do you feel about it?

No, it's what I have offered my staff. It's the best that we can do in the current climate but I know that bills are going up more quickly and that people will be feeling the impact of that. I just wondered what the general consensus was with regard to what's reasonable.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 21/05/2022 17:19

Got nothing for the last few years so would be utterly delighted. I'm also very dull so would put most of it into my pension contributions!

fyn · 21/05/2022 17:22

Everyone getting big pay rises is just going to push up inflation even more. This is why the Bank of England is asking employers not to do big pay rises. It will make the problem worse and last longer.
