No you are not alone, dd is 4.4 and currently wearing age 6 tops! (mostly bought not long before xmas) The other day I was looking at her bending down and noticed a massive gap between her top and trousers - I think I am going to have to get her age 7 next time . The problem you will find is that all the lovely clothes stop at age 4-5 and get all grown up - I find it really difficult to get clothes suitable for her age IYSWIM.

Bouncingturtle · 12/01/2008 13:20

My friend's dd is 6.5 and she is wearing 9-10 year old clothes - she is tall for her age, in fact she's the tallest in her class. Sympathise with my friend as her dd gets treated as older than she is, which can be a bit annoying for her. Reckon she'll be 6ft when she finishes growing - her mum's 5'11 and her dad's 6'4!!
It'll be tricky when she's a couple of years older when she'll be needing teen sizes while still a pre-teen!
However, we've just bought some trousers from Primark for dss who is nearly 7, 7-8 and they were too small. Yet he is of average height and build.
It does seem to me that is the same inconsistancy in children's clothes sizes as there is in women's!

mumbear · 12/01/2008 13:21

My 6 month old is in 9-12 which are starting to look a little small! She has hardly worn them. Am not going to bother with 12-18 months just go straight on to 18-24. She can just look like she has shrunk a little for a few months!

catsmother · 12/01/2008 13:39

My daughter is 4.3 and I always buy at least the next size up, eg. she wears 5-6, or even 6 at the moment. Depending on the make, I have even got a couple of bits aged 6-7 to try and get some wear out of them and no way do they look ludicrous or anything.

She's always been tall, but isn't overweight. From what I can remember while she was still getting weighed regularly as a baby, she was always in the top 10% for her age ..... someone has to be !

Like Pinkteddy, I find the main problem is finding age-relevant stuff. I do not want to dress her in glittery cerise/black lurex things with "sassy" slogans which seem to be so popular for the next age group. You can find stuff but it means a bit more searching about and I daren't usually buy mail order because I always want to try stuff on first.

IME, I've always found that Next tops usually come up a bit short (for the stated age group) whereas their trousers are more generous (or maybe my daughter has a long torso and short legs ?). M&S seems quite generously sized but they're that bit more expensive, don't have a huge choice and I don't like a lot of their range. Adams come up very small too. H&M do a good kids' range - some of it noticeably "different" IMO, but again, I always have to get at least the next age.

TheIceQueen · 12/01/2008 13:41

You're not alone - I am often rather of friends who have children in the same size clothes for what seems like forever - while my DC fly through theirs.

DS3 seems to be the worst - he's in 1-2yrs stuff - and has been for about 2/3 months - but he's only 7 1/2 months old!

wotz · 12/01/2008 13:46

i think alot of shops clothes sizes are wrong. Who's average anyway?

dd1 is 11.5 and wearing age 13-14 or size 8 tops. At this age its hard to find things that look suitable for a young child rather than a teenager.

I have always had to buy 2 years above her actual age and we don't get much wear from anything I buy for her.

She is now in size 7 shoe too!

PerkinWarbeck · 12/01/2008 13:46

This does my head in too!
DD is 10 months. She is very tall, and also pleasantly plump, as she's not walking yet. She's been in 12-18 months gear for a little while now, and there's not much room left.....

One thing that helps is opting for leggings and tunic tops. Tunics are cut to be longer, so they don't ride up at the waist so quickly. and leggings look ok at 3/4 length (even if they were supposed to be full length once upon a time).

catsmother · 12/01/2008 13:51

Oh yes, tunic tops are very useful, and there are at least plenty of those about !

dinny · 12/01/2008 13:52

Cherokee stuff from Tesco is VERY generous (and cheap to replace frequently!)

wotz · 12/01/2008 13:55

I used to shop in Mackays they were good for sizes and generous on cut, but we don't have one near us anymore

I think children's clothes being in ages are hard for the shops to get right. I mean a woman's size 14 should be a size 14 and they can't even get that right. So what chance have they with children of such varying shapes and sizes?

My DD is 3 1/2 and has been wearing an 18-24 coat among other clothes this winter. Today however she is wearing an age 6 dress that a friend passed on because it was too tight around the torso for her 5yo. It fits DD great apart from that it is a summer style (but new to DD hence her insisting on wearing it) and the straps are a bit long but it looks fine with a cardigan. She is mainly in age 2-3 though.

bozza · 12/01/2008 17:15

Should also say that DD is still wearing a couple of her baby dresses as tunics with leggings.

cornsilk · 12/01/2008 17:24

I always have found that Next are on the smaller side - ds1 fits next perfectly and he is very slim and average height. My ds2 who is a bigger build always needs the next year or 2 up from next. I have found gap to be much better for him - wheras it hangs off ds1! Also m and s ( for school trousers anyway) more generous.

K20 · 12/01/2008 17:27

DD8 is in age 11 from M&S
I guess all DC's are different

My DD is the same she is going to be 2 in week & she has been in 2-3 years clothes for about 2 months, they fit but i think soon she is going to be next size up, she is tall & people who see her think she is at least 3 years old.

It is annoying i feel i have to buy clothes all the time, same goes with her little chubby feet, shoes are driving me mad, it costs a small fortune!
