Would you walk across a field alone?

I do quite a lot of walking around my town, and one route involves walking across a field for 5-10 minutes.

I only do this during daylight and while it's usually quiet with no one around, there is the occasional dog walker etc.

But my friend thinks I am putting my line on the line by doing this, and says I am putting myself in danger. He said it's not safe for a lone woman to walk alone across fields.

I know there are news stories about horrible and unfortunate events, but they make the news because it's rare. AIBU to walk across quiet fields alone?

I do frequently, including after dark. The only danger I've ever considered, genuinely, is accidentally treading in cow shit. I honestly wouldn't think twice about anything else. I feel far less confident (although still confident) in a city.

Notimeforaname · 19/05/2022 20:42

Yes you can walk through a field. I have to all the time ,I had no idea some people would think by doing that I was putting my 'life on the line'.

I call it living and getting from A to B .

The alternatives would be to not go anywhere that doesn't have a path ..or to hire a male chaperone? 🤔

garlictwist · 19/05/2022 20:43

It would not occur to me to be afraid of walking across a field.

Baggyeye · 19/05/2022 20:43

No but I have an overactive imagination & am a wuss! I wish I could enjoy a country walk alone rather than only being happy doing them accompanied.

Skinnermarink · 19/05/2022 20:43

Yeah I probably would 🤷🏻‍♀️

GentlemanJay · 19/05/2022 20:43

I know a lady who's done the Yorkshire Three Peaks by herself and wild camped at night. In the middle of nowhere.

TheHatinaCat · 19/05/2022 20:44

I walk across fields and through the woods on my own all the time but it's very safe here.

Bitwornout · 19/05/2022 20:44

Wouldn't think twice about it, unless there were cattle in the field. I even run in the dark in winter. But I live somewhere where if I saw someone I'd know them.

userxx · 19/05/2022 20:44

Why would you not ?

Moonflower12 · 19/05/2022 20:44

I wouldn't be able to walk home if I didn't! We have a large field adjacent to our drive.
But I also walk across the fields, alone, and with DD (9).
As a PP said. Way safer than the lanes round here.

oioimatey · 19/05/2022 20:45

Yes, of course I would.

again2020 · 19/05/2022 20:46

Yes, all the time. I must admit I am more cautious about it as I get older.

As a student 20 years ago I wouldn't think twice about doing it on my own coming home from a club in the middle of the night 😬

Of course. Although I rather think I am past the age to be raped, and don't carry any valuables.

This has to be the daftest comment I have seen today. Rapists aren't concerned about the age of the woman - it's about the control. Unfortunately it can happen to anyone.

I watch all the time when out and about. You never know how quickly your surroundings can change.

shivawn · 19/05/2022 20:47

Yeah I would. I don't have reason to now but I used to as a shortcut to an old workplace.

NannyR · 19/05/2022 20:47

I would think twice about walking on my own through a field that had cows in it, but other than that I would have no problem walking on my own. I walk/hike a lot on my own rurally, often very early in the morning as I enjoy the peace and solitude and I've never felt in danger. I feel more at risk walking around where I live in the city.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 19/05/2022 20:48

What fellrunner (and numerous others!) said, although I tend to leave fields with cows in as I'm a coward!

I walk in fields and in woodland every day with my (small) dogs and would question why anybody wouldn't tbh.

ParsleyRosemarySage · 19/05/2022 20:51

Goodness, men want us all locked up in their homes don’t they?

Yes I have walked across open fields alone all my life, well since my memory has worked. What worries me is enclosed spaces, with little room for manoeuvre.

DramaAlpaca · 19/05/2022 20:51

Yes I would, and do, in the area I live in.

AnybodyAnywhere · 19/05/2022 20:53

I feel far safer walking through fields and woodlands than I do walking along some of the streets in our town..

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2022 20:53

Yes I do. I'm not bothered about cattle either.

LidlMiddleLover · 19/05/2022 20:53

I do it all the time I would feel more at risk on a street in a town tbh

Sunquench · 19/05/2022 20:54

No. My line of work doesn’t help either.

SO many weirdos about.

DogsAndGin · 19/05/2022 20:54

I walk my dog alone, through fields, countryside, woodland - in daylight. I try to find places I’m very much alone and often see just one or two people the entire walk. I’ve never felt in danger in the countryside, like I do in the town

Figgygal · 19/05/2022 20:54

Do it all the time with the dog
Lots of fields around where we live never not felt safe

SunscreenCentral · 19/05/2022 20:55

Yes. Of course.
