To want to KILL my DH

Bouncingturtle · 12/01/2008 10:28

Workmen resurfacing pavement outside with tarmac. DH goes outside and manages to step in freshly made tarmac and then proceeds to get it on kitchen floor! AAAAGGHHHH!!
Managed to get some of it off with hot water and floor cleaner, but there is still some tarry marks on my lino. And my mum is coming to visit!

BTW I'm not really going to kill my DH, after all I'll have to clear up that mess as well!!

So what I really want is some tips for getting tar off lino, preferably without using solvent!
And said solution will be applied to kitchen floor by DH!!
TIA!

(Posted here since I'd probably get more responses here )

Tarmac ???? bump!

psychomum5 · 12/01/2008 10:36

lol at not really wanting to kill DH cos of that mess........

as for tarmac......no idea, altho I find that nail varnish remover can remove more than it should (ie, varnish off my nice table[ngry]), so maybe you could try that??

goodluck with the non-dh-killing

cif is pretty good

colditz · 12/01/2008 10:48

Swarfega?

Bouncingturtle · 12/01/2008 11:43

Swafega - hadn't thought of that! That'll probably do it, my dad used to use that to get engine grease off.
I thought of nail polish remover but that's a last resort to be honest as it stinks!

I was given the tip by the man who installed my flooring (laminate though, not lino) that you can get it off with WD40 - worked for us!

You may want to try a small patch first in case it damages it.

discoverlife · 12/01/2008 11:47

WD40 or Diesel, then wash numerous times with soapy water to get rid of the smaell of the WD40 or Diesel.
Diesel, because that is what the workmen dip their shovels in to get rid of the stuck on bits when thay are doing the roads.

Ah, was just about to say WD40!!

Bouncingturtle · 12/01/2008 13:04

I shall tell my dh to use the wd40, don't really fancy siphoning petrol or diesel out of our cars!

He is suitably apologetic.

Thanks all for your advice, knew I could rely on Mumsnet!
