How much does your year 1 child do?

Not a TAAT but I’m wondering if I’m expecting too much from my own child after reading this thread.

I ask my yr 1 child to;

  • put used dishes next to the sink

  • empty her school bag

  • tidy her room/pick stuff before the robot hoover comes in

  • put dirty washing (not inside out) in the washing basket

  • sort put and put away her clean underwear

  • put away her folded clothes

  • she always forgets to mKe her bed but it’s not a huge deal

Sounds fine

I wish mine would do that I'm forever chasing up used packed lunch boxes ... never had a bed made by DCs until they were teenagers despite my asking 😜

Mine is only in reception but a early September baby so I'll answer anyway.

He does everything you've mentioned but does need a lot of reminding and encouragement. I think I could probably ask more of him and he'd be able to do it, but I just don't think he'd do it to my standards so it's not worth it 🤣 he's able to load/unload the dishwasher, and he can load/ unload the washing machine/tumble dryer, he can hang out washing or take it off the airer and fold it too, but I get annoyed when things aren't done my own way so I'd rather just do it myself.

Year 1, not 1 year old. So about 6.

Lol my heart skipped a beat then!

Year 1, yes, this is more than reasonable.

I read 1 year old too and was like what kind of 1 year old can put their dirty dishes next to the sink?!!!

Someone call Mensa.

RockAndRollerskate · 19/05/2022 16:23

haha I also read this as a one year old and thought I was good because mine could help empty the dishwasher and put dirty clothes into the basket.

But yes, for year one this is fine. If you do all of these from early on, it becomes habit/routine and not a chore so is just more likely to get done

1 year old?!?!?

😂

My year 1 child does all of these as well (though needs help with making the bed). If I ask hee for help with anything in else she usually excitedly does that as well (Eg dusting, wiping tables, putting laundry into the towashing machine, helping with the baby) but she doesn't really do anything else on a regular basis.

Year one DS (autumn birthday) without prompting will:

  • make his bed (this is the one he is most consistent at and generally doesn't need to be asked)
  • put clothes in washing (will definitely do this with underwear, but gets confused when other clothes are dirty or whether they can be worn again)
On request will:
  • tidy bedroom (lego in boxes, books on shelves)
  • empty the dishwasher with his 8 year old sibling (not knives). Anything that has to go on high up shelves is left on the counter for an adult to put away.
  • put dishes in dishwasher (but this is more trouble than it's worth at the moment, they are generally not rinsed or put at a sensible angle so I have to sort it out again later, often with dripping cereal over everything)
  • make himself a sandwich/toast (pre-cut cheese so quite easy). He will also pour cereal and milk for breakfast. These are when we are in a hurry, we mostly all eat together, but it's handy to have him grab his own snack/sandwich when we are on our way out to swimming or something.
  • water pots (his granny taught him this and he now criticises me if I put too much water in or get any on the leaves!)
-put underwear away. He doesn't have any drawers so all his clothes are hung up. I haven't got him to do that yet, but he can sort washing into piles (we set a box up for each family member and he throws clothes in from the other side of the bed - he has fun and the washing gets sorted).

He doesn't empty his school bag, but that is so I don't have a thousand pieces of scrunched up pieces of paper art everywhere.
