Were we unreasonable to let the builders park on the street?

We're having some building work done and the builders have been parking (two cars) on our street (no lines/bays just general open street parking). Neighbours have come round to complain at us.

We do have a driveway (from the garage to the road) long enough for two cars which the builders could have parked on, but in doing so they would block in our car (in the garage), and mean we have to get both builders to move their cars each time we go in or out.

The builders are only there weekdays and are gone by 4pm before most people get back from work, but apparently this neighbour was annoyed as they had a party and there wasn't enough street parking for all their guests.

Who the hell parks their car in a garage these days?!

GandTfortea · 19/05/2022 11:17

we give the builders our drive ,you know ,to try to make life easier for them ,fetching and carrying from their van …how on earth
did it not occur to you to do the same

StrangeCondition · 19/05/2022 11:18

If the builders were taking up parking spaces meaning the residents couldn't park then I can see why they could have been pissed off, bit cheeky of them to moan about it because their guests couldn't park though. What makes their guests more entitled to park there than your builders?

I totally understand leaving the drive free so you could get your car in and out

Tessasanderson · 19/05/2022 11:25

Yes you ABU. Whilst the fact is, no one owns the parking out on the road, you made an absolute choice to make your life easier at the expense of your neighbors. They will remember your neighbourly attitude in the future.

I had a similar situation recently. We had our drive extended to make life easier for all with parking. Whilst the work was carried out me and my son parked our cars anything upto 15mins walk away (Correctly parked) so that we didnt encroach into neghbours ability to park. That let the builders have whatever room they needed without making life to difficult for everyone.

Their party was on a weekday before 4 o clock?

Why not read all the OPs posts and you would find out!

Your neighbours are being unreasonable. No one has the right to street parking and sometimes things will happen in our neighbours houses that inconvenience us. Equally we will sometimes do things that inconvenience our neighbours. Everyone needs to just learn to rub along together, it is not like it is permanent or all the time.

We have an odd set up at ours where our drive way crosses another house. We had some stuff for new fences and a skip delivered which went about 2 feet past our land and slightly across the third neighbours house. It was a bit annoying for them for a week, I apologised for the inconvenience as soon as we realised. Their response was that it was no big deal, it won’t be there forever, the skip has to go somewhere and everyone has slightly inconvenient things going on sometimes.

The drama really is so unnecessary.

Leftbutcameback · 19/05/2022 11:47

This is weird - as a PP said they had a party during the week and daytime? If that is correct surely they could have asked you to move the vans for that one day and short period of time?

oioimatey · 19/05/2022 11:49

Why are people so weird? It's a bloody road. Honestly!

InChocolateWeTrust · 19/05/2022 12:07

Yabu not to park your car on the road and ask builders to both go on your drive.

Radical idea eh?

Seeline · 19/05/2022 12:19

So if your garage and drive are at the end of your garden is your driveway reached via a different road to the one you live on? Not the road that your builders parked on?

myuterusistryingtokillme · 19/05/2022 12:19

So it's ok for visitors to get home to take up parking, but not for visitors to yours?

myuterusistryingtokillme · 19/05/2022 12:20

Her, not get!
