If you're not fit to work you take a sick day, don't see the need to mark it as a specific exemption.

HangOnToYourself · 19/05/2022 19:12

Did you actually read any of the articles on this or just the click bait titles? It's not for "period discomfort" it's for those who suffer severe, debilitating pain

lancsgirl85 · 19/05/2022 19:13

I think it's a good idea.

bridgetreilly · 19/05/2022 19:53

I think in general it doesn’t matter why you’re not well enough to work, if you’re not well enough you don’t work. But I can see why it’s helpful to have something like this for people whose periods are so bad they need time off every month. It makes it clear to employers that they have to allow it.

hopeful777 · 19/05/2022 20:14

Problem is there are lots of illnesses that may have recurring symptoms or even needing short term leave to be able to attend urgent appointments; I’m not sure why specifically women should get time off for period pain.. but I do agree employers should be more sympathetic/flexible to those suffering with severe menorrhagia.

Twizbe · 19/05/2022 20:16

What would be really good is if there was more research into WHY some women have such awful periods. That and what treatments can be done (other than masking symptoms with hormones)

Oh and doctors listening to women in pain and suffering rather than just saying it's nothing.

Spoken by a woman who used to have debilitating periods (thank you ablation)

MagnoliaXYZ · 19/05/2022 20:25

I think this is a bad idea. If a company has a choice between hiring a man and a woman of menstruating age, if there's a risk the woman will be off for three days every month, they're more than likely going to chose to hire the man. I think it will negatively affect equality for all women.

TinyTornado · 19/05/2022 20:27

Where this would be helpful is for where employers use something like the Bradford Formula on staff absence. This is where multiple short term e.g a couple of days a month is seen as more disruptive than a longer term absence and so someone would be more likely to face disciplinary actions for this than other conditions.

I have suffered from debilitating periods in the past. I would faint, have the runs, vomit for hours. The pain was debilitating, I couldn’t walk- it was the same intensity as contractions in labor. It would come on suddenly and I would get ‘trapped’ places as I couldn’t leave due to the constant vomiting (I got stuck in Costa once).

I had extreme anxiety about going into work when I knew I was due on. It miraculously cleared up after the birth of my son and I’m so grateful. I would have definitely welcomed a day off sick as it used to hit me every month and it was impossible to work with it (I couldn’t even hold a conversation).

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/05/2022 20:48

There are some women who absolutely do have debilitating periods and need time off. There will always be some women who have mild discomfort or no discomfort and will choose to take advantage of this. I do worry this may cause employers to be more reluctant to hire women. 2 or 3 days every month is quite a lot before you add in other sickness, time off to look after sick children and so on. It isn't necessarily going to make life easier in the work world.

shivawn · 19/05/2022 20:51

It's good for women who really suffer and need the time off. I get fairly bad cramps (although they're a distant memory right now thanks to pregnancy and breastfeeding) but nothing a couple solpadine can't take care of.

dolphinsarentcommon · 19/05/2022 20:54

I'd much rather real help was available and women didn't have to put up with it

RandomMess · 19/05/2022 20:58

DD1 suffers horrifically to the point she is pursuing a hysterectomy. Awareness that for some women it is debilitating is good.

For some it triggers migraines etc.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 19/05/2022 21:05

Ridiculous idea open to abuse imo . Of course there are woman that get terrible period pains my dd suffers badly . But can you imagine some people demanding 3 days every month just cause they can but others will just crack on . Tbh it should be treated like and other illness your not well enough to work you don’t work may it be period pains or a cold .

mumda · 19/05/2022 21:17

Period days
MIdwifery appointments
Maternity leave
Emergency leave for child care
Menopause leave

No wonder men want to transition.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 19/05/2022 21:19

Is menopause leave a thing?
