Coaches kids getting all the awards

Pecially · 18/05/2022 23:36

Another kids sports team end of season awards thing and coaches kids dominate all the awards. Happens every year regardless of performance or attitude.
AIBU to think that fully grown adult coaches need to stop this awkward cringefest?

Totally. And if its football the coaches kids are always up front so they get the goals, even if theyre shite.

x2boys · 18/05/2022 23:43

Similar to teachers kids in schools then
Getting all the plum roles in the plays etc

Saz12 · 18/05/2022 23:45

Yep!

i tell mine it’s because parents notice their children more. So they get awards end of year, but rows every week.

RamsayEaster · 18/05/2022 23:55

When my hubbie coached my sons football team he never voted for my son for player of the year as it didn’t seem fair ( even though he was the best player )

Livercool · 18/05/2022 23:57

You should help coach the team. Give up some of your time and make the changes you would like instead of talking badly of the volunteers giving up their free time to provide coaching for your children.

purplepaintedpineapple · 18/05/2022 23:58

One of my sons teams, the coach made up a new award for his son as he didn't get any of the usual yearly ones. He made the trophy himself as well... 🙄

Kanaloa · 19/05/2022 00:03

That’s rubbish. To be fair that’s why I’m glad I don’t teach my kids’ hobbies, because my kids are obviously the smartest, most talented, and best looking kids on any team.

Funny thing though, I had a period of time where my daughter was at the preschool I worked at, and I never ever suggested her as star of the week or lead in the nativity or anything. It would have seemed obvious favouritism.

SeemsSoUnfair · 19/05/2022 00:05

Ds's team was the same, every year there were 3 awards it was the same son of coach who got the best player award every year for the 6 years ds was there. He was a good player, and although there were other strong contenders for the award everyone just eyerolled and let it slide (as you can never critise the saintly volunteer coaches 🙄). Then one year a new boy joined at the start of the season who was simply outstanding, his addition to the team won them the league and 2 tournaments that year. It was like suddenly having a professional footballer in the team.

Coaches sent out text saying the coaches son was getting best player again and parents challenged it as it was blantantly unfair that year. So new boy got the best player award but they made up a brand new award just for the coaches son instead 🤦🏻‍♀️. No one knew about it beforehand, they sheepishly announced it at the end, trophy was bigger and better looking than the best player award and barely anyone clapped as they were confused by wtf was going on, all really awkward.

ssd · 19/05/2022 00:06

Dh coached for years and couldn't have ds in his team as ds didn't listen to him😩

This!!

ProclivityForPyrotechnics · 19/05/2022 00:29

So things haven't changed in the 20 years I've been out of school. Angry

JacquelineCarlyle · 19/05/2022 00:15

This!!

Erm so I’m to join in on this madness?
this has happened for the last 10 years, I don’t think my one voice would make the slightest bit of difference. There are 8 coaches already (way too many) and some have been open about the main reason for volunteering to coach has been to get their kid selected for the steamed team etc.
to be honest it would be better if there were fewer coaches and more chance for other kids!

Why on earth would the coach feel the need to do this, I mean it’s embarrassing for the poor kid.
I just find it all really strange to watch grown ups be so petty 😣

DH has started helping out with coaching DSs football team. Not because DH is mad about football, particularly good at it, or wants his son to be a footballer, but because DS loves it, he takes him anyway, it's something they do together and the coaching has social perks in a village where DH doesn't know that many people.

DS is weirdly good at football. Amongst the top 2 or 3 players in his team, depending on what skills you prioritise (he's not a striker, but has nifty footwork, encourages other players, thinks ahead and actually passes the ball!). This is a fluke. We don't watch football at home, no one supports a team, we're not really a very sporty family. Yet somehow, football is DSs thing.

It's been a weird eye opener for me. Because DS is quite good we get an odd status amongst the football parents. They assume we care as much as they do! Everyone assumes DH is football mad and wants his son to be the best. We just want him to have fun.

I can totally see that, to parents thay don't know us (most of them), it might look like favouritism whenever DS gets selected to play matches, or gets an accolade. In reality it couldn't be further from the truth.

Petal12 · 19/05/2022 05:51

My husband manages both my kids teams. There’s no need for this at all. 3 awards, everyone votes.
1)Parents choice player of the year
2)Players choice player of the year
3) Most improved (decided between the manager and 2 coaches)
Before implementing the above and group votes on player of the match my kids were constantly ignored so my husband didn’t look as though he was favouring them. And yes big love to all the coaches/volunteers out there - they are sainted - I see first hand the amount of work and hassle that goes into it, not to mention the crap the kids give them sometimes. Speak up OP and suggest something like the above where the parents and kids themselves get a say

balalake · 19/05/2022 07:15

The coaches are probably glory seeking Manchester United supporters.

YANBU to dislike such favouritism, which does not help the children who are getting the awards as well as those who don't.

THisbackwithavengeance · 19/05/2022 07:21

Loving the suggestions that parents who complain should stop whinging and instead rock up and coach the kids themselves. Then presumably they can can then favour their own kids!

How about a system that is actually fair?

Plus my DCs don't do football but if they did, I'm sure the team would not appreciate any coaching attempt by an overweight, unfit woman who knows fuck all about football.

Pecially · 19/05/2022 08:10

😂Exactly this!
There are many things in life I volunteer for, but coaching a kids team is not one of them!
