Someone has superglued our entire carpet to the concrete floor.

Shamelessly posting for traffic but I'm very stressed and concerned.

We've saved up for ages to replace the carpet in out home. It's the original carpet that was laid when the house was built 8 years ago. We've lived here 5.

It's not our home, it's owned by a private landlord that used to be part of the council.

Basically, I've been and ordered the laminate and came back home. Thought I'll just lift a bit of the carpet to see what's under, more curiosity than anything. I've now discovered the entire carpet is glued to the concrete floor.

There are no carpet tracks, no underlay just the carpet and the glue. I've emailed the landlord to request they remove it but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Has anyone removed this before? It took me 45 mins to remove about 20cm x 10cm. The carpet downstairs is 33m squared

Please tell me there's a magic tool to fix this!

Have you permission from the landlord to replace the flooring ?

Singleandproud · 18/05/2022 16:45

Iron or wallpaper steamer on the carpet maybe with a tea towel inbetween to heat the glue and loosen it?

AbuelaGetTheUmbrellas · 18/05/2022 16:47

I don’t understand why you would remove the carpet if it’s not your house. Do you have the landlord’s permission? If so, shouldn’t he/she be responsible for replacing the carpet?

FourTeaFallOut · 18/05/2022 16:47

Could you glue that bit down again, call it underlay and lay down click-clack laminate on top?

Afterfire · 18/05/2022 16:48

It’s actually not that uncommon to glue carpets down. They used to ask when you booked fitting whether you wanted it glued or fitted using gripper rods etc! Providing the landlord agrees to you replacing the carpet I would go back to where you’ve ordered the new one from and explain and see what they suggest. They may be happy to remove it for you for a bit of extra money.

LampLighter414 · 18/05/2022 16:48

Asking the landlord to remove the carpet they own at your whim? Lol

stuntbubbles · 18/05/2022 16:49

Steam might do it, or something chemically. Or spilling something and replacing on insurance? But not sure why you’re paying to replace your landlord’s carpet.

ProfYaffle · 18/05/2022 16:50

I'm no expert but I'd guess that's carpet glue rather than superglue. You can get solvent to dissolve it though I've never tried it myself.

Snowiscold · 18/05/2022 16:52

Yes, why are you replacing the flooring? Have you got permission?

reesewithoutaspoon · 18/05/2022 16:53

Um I would be very careful. your landlord is well within their rights to insist you replace the carpet when you move and restore the house to how you received it. you cant just rip flooring up without permission. Same for decorating. Check you tenancy agreement

MayorDusty · 18/05/2022 16:53

You need a wallpaper scraper and heat but I'd ask whoever is fitting the new floor if it can stay down under a waterproof membrane.

LaurieFairyCake · 18/05/2022 16:53

Why would you replace a carpet that's only 8 years old.... ShockConfused

I've a carpet that's been down 6 years, looks new

Driftingonawave · 18/05/2022 16:54

Yes of course we have permission, it's a very long term rental.

I've never heard of carpet being glued down like this, I could understand around the edges but the whole thing is just a nightmare? Do people actually ask for this?

OhRiRi · 18/05/2022 16:55

Why are you spending your own money (which sounds like it was a lot for you to save so not an insignificant amount) to change the flooring in a house that you don't own. You could replace the floor and the landlord decides he wants to sell up in 3 months time.

Driftingonawave · 18/05/2022 16:56

We're the second tenants, it was awful when we moved in, stains I've never been able to shift. We've had it professionally cleaned last year and it looked good for a month then terrible again.

Why is everyone commenting on the fact that op is replacing flooring in a rental house and not actual offering any advice on their issue!??

Op I've never known a whole carpet to be glued in that way. I would ask LL for advice, I would think there is some kind of dissolver available.

Snowiscold · 18/05/2022 16:58

This makes no sense. Why are you paying for it?

Driftingonawave · 18/05/2022 16:59

It's more of a housing association I guess, they're not gonna kick us out ever as long we pay the rent.

@MayorDusty thank you for that suggestion!

Sorry, but this.

WombatNo12 · 18/05/2022 17:00

Landlord should do the replacement. Yiu rent, so this should not be your problem, you pay for maintenance & upgrades with your rent.

Have you read Mumsnet before, or…?

Hadalifeonce · 18/05/2022 17:00

Is it worth contacting a local carpet fitter? They may have some trick of the trade.

Bl00berryblues · 18/05/2022 17:01

Why would you be spending money in a rented property ?

If you replace with wood floor

The LL can request, you change it back to carpet at your expense

Just leave it as carpet

Thehop · 18/05/2022 17:02

Lay laminate over it.
