To be miffed my kid needs a paid covid test to go away, when vaccination wasn’t possible.

Kid is recently 12. She had her first vaccine as soon as it was allowed for under 12s in April. But she can’t have her second until after she comes back from her school trip to France at the end of June, because it hasn’t been 12 weeks. It feels really unfair that I have to shell out £70 for a test when there’s nothing else I could have done. It’s a lot of money to me at the moment (my mum paid for her to go, and obviously I couldn’t plan for or choose the dates)

I know it won’t affect many kids, but it’s bloody typical it affects us. I swear we have fallen down every covid support crack there is. Just moaning, really. I’m getting the dirty end of the stick a lot at the moment, and it’s one thing too many today. It’ll only be her second overnight ever and we are both really looking forward to it (for entirely different reasons!) so I’ll find it somehow, but man I could do without it!

whatnumber do check this of course, but if Cyprus comes under the same umbrella as Greece you don't need a recovery certificate any more - from 1 May they've waived the lot: www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/greece/entry-requirements

@dementedpixie you can get childrens 8 weeks apart.

Only if they are at high risk of covid. It's set at 12 weeks between doses to minimise chances of myocarditis in that age group

LilacPoppy · 18/05/2022 19:30

@dementedpixie no you can’t book, however walk ins will do it 8 weeks as the 12 weeks is purely advisory.

whatnumber · 18/05/2022 19:40

@Puzzledandpissedoff thank you but Cyprus seem to have their own rules!

School said PCR, recommended a place for £70. I’ve since found a place for £39 and phone school to check if it’s ok. It’s a fit to fly test (but they aren’t flying). Tbh I don’t think school know what they are talking about. But it’ll be their boots on the ground, so it needs to be what they ask for.

I’ll look at the postal ones. Thanks all. I wouldn’t usually be bothered, but I’m utterly broke and it’s a big deal atm.

It's not about whether it's ok with the school, it's whether it's Ok with France, you can get travel tests for under £20.

dementedpixie · 18/05/2022 20:21

If school wants you to use a £70 PCR then they can pay for it! LFTs are also accepted and are cheaper

Ah, I see - I thought it would come under Greece, but that's why I emphasised checking

artisanbread · 18/05/2022 20:31

Took my 12 year old to France at Easter after only her first dose. You only need an antigen test taken within 48 hours of entry. We used Simply Test Me and it cost less than £10. You send off for the rest kit in advance, take it within the 48 hour window, take a picture of the results and email them. They sent us a certificate within 10 minutes (which nobody checked on entry to France!).

artisanbread · 18/05/2022 20:36

Send school the link to the official French travel guidelines and ask why they are insisting on a PCR test.

Can I jump on and ask how France view a 15 year old who has had the first and second that he was offered but no booster for that age group. Does he class as fully vaccinated as my 17 and 19 year olds have had 2 plus booster. This is also for France

dementedpixie · 18/05/2022 21:15

From reading the info only those age 18+ need to get a booster for France

Glad hoo posted this as it's all so confusing!
We are going Cyprus and France this year and I didn't have a good reaction to my first two vaccines so don't want the booster. I have also had covid twice (after vaccines) so don't feel the need to boost yet (maybe winter time). So I am classes as unvaccinated!
Cyprus says you have to have an in clinic test but France doesn't say that.
So France will accept the home tests then?

Aren't you classed as vaccinated after the two doses? That's what I've read any way

dementedpixie · 18/05/2022 21:41

For some countries if a certain amount of time has passed since the 2nd dose (often 270 days) then a booster is required to be fully vaccinated

dementedpixie · 18/05/2022 21:43

For France for example:

For travellers aged 18 and over, France will recognise you as ‘vaccinated’ for entry purposes if you completed your initial vaccine course within the last 9 months. If more than 9 months have elapsed since your initial course, and you have not since received a booster, you will be considered unvaccinated and must follow the rules detailed below

whatnumber · 18/05/2022 23:07

Yes Cyprus is 270 days/9 months for valid vaccinations.
I wonder if people are getting caught out. Not hearing anything on the news of people being turned away.

Yes, or at least it did in April.
