To ask for your project managment salaries?

Careeradviceplease123 · 17/05/2022 20:52

I am starting a new role on Monday as an entry level project manager for a government project.

I was wondering what type of project management roles people have (tech/business change etc), how you got there, how salaries compare between industries, what type of qualifications would be best for me to get, do you enjoy your role etc.

Or any other project manmagment knowledge you have!

Sorry if this is cheeky, I just find peoples career paths really interesting - I hope this is the start of a career for me, I feel like I have only had jobs so far.

45k plus bonus for 4 days a week in financial services. No relevant experience, I didn’t want or ask for the job. I was an exec assistant that asked for a location transfer and perhaps that was a form of punishment?? I went off on mat leave and didn’t come back.

Sleepyquest · 17/05/2022 20:59

Oooh watching with interest! How do people get into this very lucrative role?!

Singlebutmarried · 17/05/2022 20:59

Project management consultant

850/day
750/day
600/day

Salaried it’s between 80-120k

but as consultant you’ve corp tax, no sick pay, no holiday pay etc to take into account.

FilthyforFirth · 17/05/2022 21:01

£42k, public sector. I dont wamt to say my exact job title but there is one level below me and then 2 above me and then programme manager. I've got both PRINCE II and APM which my work paid for.

The career progression is good and I love it. I changed professions roughly 3 years ago, so a bit behind where I would like to be. But grateful I didn't start at the bottom.

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 17/05/2022 21:01

Why is this in AIBU?

HelloCanYouHearMe · 17/05/2022 21:11

£48k private sector digital education. Hate it so much im moving to a public sector digital role for £42k with a much better pension, AL and sickness benefits

HelloCanYouHearMe · 17/05/2022 21:12

Meant to add, I have PRINCE, AgilePM, Certified Scrum Master and Change Management practitioner qualifications

1990s · 17/05/2022 21:13

Why don’t you tell us your salary first OP?

Invisimamma · 17/05/2022 21:14

Project management role in the third sector, medium sized organisation. My full time salary is £34-42k but I only work 4 days. I'm in my early 30s if that makes a difference.

I was in a development role, in project delivery and moved into management role fairly recently.

Before this organisation I was doing policy-type work for another charity. I'm a humanities graduate and did a few internships with government departments while at uni.

Lyricallie · 17/05/2022 21:15

41k kind of public energy sector APM, with APM and experience as an engineer. However hoping that goes up when I'm a PM rather than an APM.

Started as a graduate in a technical developer role (including on government projects) for 4 years, working up to technical lead for 4 years then moved into project management where I've been for another 6 years (but 2y on mat leave). Earn equivalent of approx £70k now (but pro rated down as I'm part time). Work for a big organisation in their financial services department.

For me my background on the technical side has been a really good basis for my project management (managing teams of people in the role I used to be in) so my top tip would be to understand the context of whatever project you're working on, it enables you to challenge the team a bit and not be at the mercy of whatever they might try and get past you.

Second tip would be to get as much training as possible in ms Excel and ms project - excel in particular is really really powerful when you understand some of the more complex features, I don't know if it's the same everywhere but it makes my job so much easier.

I've never done any PM qualifications, just learnt on the job. I would consider it for my CV if I planned on moving company (which I don't).

Same here!

Movealong14 · 17/05/2022 21:19

I work as a department head for an IT project management company, happy to answer any questions OP

Basilbrushgotfat · 17/05/2022 21:19

@Singlebutmarried whats the difference between a project manager and a project management consultant?

Movealong14 · 17/05/2022 21:20

We are also actively hiring business analysts and project managers if anyone is looking for a new role

Careeradviceplease123 · 17/05/2022 21:20

Mine is an entry level role, so just under 30k.

You would only pay those as a contractor.

As a consultant (e.g. big four, but obviously there are many many others) you are of course an employee of the consultancy.

Consultancy project managers start at £40k and go up to over £200k for experienced programme management (e.g. running a specialist £50M engagement including commercials).

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2022 21:32

I'm in Pharmaceuticals and our PMs get between £45k to £65k. We mostly promote internally so people have the technical knowledge but not formal PM qualifications before they start the job but we provide training so PMs can get recognised qualifications if they want.

December11 · 17/05/2022 21:34

I manage a PMO and change management functions centered around crm systems, occasionally manage projects myself too. On about 100k, car allowance, 20% bonus, stock and some other benefits. In addition to pm experience I’ve ITIL certs, scrum master certs. Industry is tech. It’s a very diverse and interesting career path in my opinion.

JohnNutLips · 17/05/2022 21:53

IT PM private sector - 65k. No formal PM qualifications - worked my way up in management roles after starting as an exec assistant.

jevoudrais · 17/05/2022 22:17

SofiaSoFar · 17/05/2022 22:18

You are being unreasonable.

Movealong14 · 17/05/2022 22:18
