Is this a silly amount of money for our food shop?

Sorry - I know there have been a few threads about food shop bills but I am just astounded by ours at the moment and wanted to see if we are overspending and where we could make savings. We already shop in the likes of Aldi, Tesco, and B&Ms. We are a family of 4 - 2 adults, a teen and a toddler - plus a cat. We are spending in the region of £130-150 per week (circa £600-700 per month). This doesn't include anything like eating out or luxuries/alcohol etc - just the essentials really.

Are we spending a lot? Or is this about average now costs have risen?

Should have said that amount includes cleaning products and toiletries.

I am spending around £90-100 per week on just two adults and large dog (includes 3-4 bottles of supermarket wine) so I'd say that's about right.

whatatool · 17/05/2022 17:12

I'm just here for the slew of responses telling you they feed a family of 8 with loads of fresh veggies, massive salads and the most ethically produced meats for £50 a week.

TheMullerLightOwl · 17/05/2022 17:13

I don't think that's excessive - we paid £70 last week for 2 adults and a cat.

nearlyspringyay · 17/05/2022 17:14

Sounds about right to me. 2 adults and 2 tweens mine is coming in around £130 and that doesn't include the dogs food. Does include lunch stuff for DH but not me or the kids. I shop in Sainsburys.

ThatshallotBaby · 17/05/2022 17:14

Sounds about right to me.

wonkygorgeous · 17/05/2022 17:15

My online Tesco shop is £75 every five days. It used to be £60.

So I'm spending approx £420 a month for two adults. Three teenagers and two cats.

Didododo · 17/05/2022 17:15

We spend £120-140 (alcohol included) for a family of 2 adults, 2 primary aged kids so I’d say that’s about right. We don’t eat anything especially fancy and tend to use supermarket own brands. Don’t eat a huge amount of meat either.

So I’d say you are about right. Sadly, it’s a lot of money and definitely more than I used to spend.

Tiredmum100 · 17/05/2022 17:16

My food shop on Sunday was £140, thats for 2 adults, 2 dc and 3 cats. I

Spaghag · 17/05/2022 17:17

I would say that's right. We spend between £90 & £100 per week in Aldi but once you've added the odd top ups (bread, milk, anything forgotten etc) we're probably looking at more like £130.

4 adults (but 3 are at work all day & don't have breakfast or lunch from home), a 10 year old & 2 cats.

Moodycow78 · 17/05/2022 17:18

We're 2 adults, 2 under 5 and a cat and we spend about 150-160 p/w, don't think yours is high Tbh

PicniKTime · 17/05/2022 17:19

Are you still buying nappies?

I would say it’s probably normal 😬 just totted mine up. We are 2 adults, toddler (nappies) plus 2 teens half the week.

mine was £430 for whole of April. Mainly lidl with Tesco top ups. But as I said above the teens only here 50% of time. Which especially makes a difference with snacks!

I meal plan Monday- Friday and very rarely throw out food. Mix up nice meals (fish, steak, roast with all trimmings!!) , with the cheaper ones (Jacket pots/pitta pizzas/ spaghetti bol/veg and chickpea stews in slow cooker etc…)

lancsgirl85 · 17/05/2022 17:19

Thanks everyone. Looks about right then! It just blows my mind a bit that we are spending in the region of £7,500-£8,000 per year in supermarkets 😱

I try to keep to £100 for family of 5 plus cat but often have to remove things from online basket as realistically a shop is around £130 a week

waitingpatientlyforspring · 17/05/2022 17:20

We spend that but it does include alcohol. Ours is probably closer to £150 a week, especially when you add the odd top up shop and the cat food pouches that we buy via Amazon. Two adults and two teenagers.

Ducksinthebath · 17/05/2022 17:25

Sounds reasonable in light of current prices.

Wam90 · 17/05/2022 17:44

Ours is normally about £70-£80 per week for 2 adults and 2 children under 3 on an average week.
I started to do the food shopping online at Tesco because I easily spent £100+ in Aldi by picking things up we didn’t need.
Could you do this? I know it’s cheaper to shop around but it does reduce the temptation of treats/ things you didn’t need.

Wouldyabeguilty · 17/05/2022 17:46

I would be delighted with that amount. I seem to be constantly spending money on food.

lancsgirl85 · 17/05/2022 17:46

Yes still buying nappies, wipes etc. Also still buying formula milk approx twice a month as toddler is still in the process of weaning off it at night time. Maybe the cost will come down when we get her off that.

Multiple shopping trips always means more spending.

Meal plan and have a lost.dont impulse buy.
Keep a log of what's lurking in the freezer and cupboards.

Mellowyellow222 · 17/05/2022 18:03

I live alone - just en and the cat. My weekly shop is never under £60 and can be higher.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 17/05/2022 18:04

That sounds about right for what's basically three adults, a toddler and a cat.

Phyllis321 · 17/05/2022 18:06

Slightly different but I just paid £60 to fill up my tiny car. It was about £47 a few months back.

thefatpotato · 17/05/2022 18:06

That doesn't sound too far off to me. We spent £85 at the weekend for a weekly shop but that didn't include cat food or any cleaning stuff, or alcohol etc. I will usually spend another £30 at least in top-up bits through the week (for eg, an ice lolly after school, a snack on the go). Plus we will eat out twice a week, DH buys coffee and lunch daily.

I will say, the £85 was in sainsburys with a meal-plan list. We've just switched over from Ocado and I never used to meal plan, which was easily £130 a week plus the extras through the week.

We prioritise good food (lots of fresh stuff and the kids love berries) and I like certain branded pasta etc, but we only eat once a week and don't buy organic.

TheSnowyOwl · 17/05/2022 18:06

Family of five plus four cats. We spend at least £150 per week on our online food delivery. It does include most of the cat food, all the cleaning products and our lunches.
