parking - what's fair?

Myself and my partner live in a complex of flats and houses with allocated parking on the site. We don't have a car at the moment and don't need one. Most people who visit us get the train and there are car parks all around.

Some people who have just moved in have 2 cars and have offered to pay to use our space. Now, for me I would just say, what the heck, use it. However the people who want it and my partner are all very much on the lines of it being a paid agreement.

So, what kind of number do you think is fair?

If you rent, I'd just be a little bit careful. I honestly don't know the rules, but it could fall under a sub-letting violation?

I'd absolutely do it myself (I'm also a renter in a flat, with an allocated space), but I'd probably keep it very low-key. No paper trail, just a gentleman's agreement, and slide a tenner under my door once a week.

@ShadowPuppets That's interesting, thank you. £25 sounds fair, I was thinking in the region of £1 a day. I briefly met the people who have moved in and they seem very nice but obviously having everything written down and clarified is best for everyone.

@zingally I see what you're saying. I wasn't aware of subletting rules until today! Something to factor in I guess.

Some friends of mine sold their unwanted parking allocation, all legal and above board, for 10 grand....

It would be interesting to know how that would affect the sale price of their property.

Find out what on street permit parking costs in your area.

Likely to have knocked more than that off the value and something you cant do without the mortgage holders permission.

where I am parking at the station costs £25 per day so I’d find out what your local rate is and charge according. Also what if you have visitors?

Figstar4eva · 17/05/2022 19:47

I pay $25 a month for allocated parking in my apartment complex so I would say £25 a month

I used to pay £1000 a year for a parking space in London and that was 15 years ago.
