To buy a garage

Husband thinks IABU.
The situation is that we are always short of space and live in an expensive area. To move for an extra room would cost around £100k. We have a trailer tent that lives in our garage, and we want to keep it, but do not need to access it all the time. My plan is to buy a standalone garage for about £15k in a cheaper location near our house (the location is fine it's just a bit out in the sticks) and use that to store the trailer in (the trailer isn't that valuable but we do like it, and it would be fine to go get it when we need it). Then I could spend 20k converting the garage at our home which would be ideal for the extra space we need. DH thinks this is dodgy, I think it makes a lot of sense. (We don't have room to store the trailer on the drive either so that option is out) So AIBU and naive with my plan?

Sounds good to me. If you need a garage, do it. Is there anything else you would need to store that you'd want immediate access to? Tools etc?

I assume you haven't the room for a large shed for storage instead?

Sounds like a good idea. What would the cost be of hiring a suitable size storage unit for say, 10 yrs? If its more then it makes sense to buy garage. You can always sell it on later or rent it out.
Then convert your garage to extra living space.

Try local farmers etc via Facebook. Someone may be able to offer under cover storage. Local rates for undercover storage for a caravan range from £400-£550 per year depending on security.

Thanks for the responses - yes, the other option is to look at caravan type storage places, but I'll admit I like the idea of owning a garage and saying things like "hmm, I'll stick it in the lockup". I think it would be useful for other storage too, although we'd have to think carefully about security & insurance (I don't think we own anything particularly valuable though so probably not an issue). I'm glad it's not a totally barmy idea.

Just realised the first response was referring to other storage needs at our house - this is a good point as i haven't considered the bikes! We have a loft and a decent sized garden shed already, but might need to keep a small bit of the garage as a bike store (or maybe fit one in in the garden).

I’m out old house we did away with our integrated garage and converted it into another living room. It was worth every penny. We bought a big garden shed for bikes, lawnmower etc and it worked perfectly
