To think this was bitchy?

I was talking to my friend the other day because I’m relocating to a different area and the topic went onto food shopping and she asked where I was going to shop now etc… I mentioned that there was an M&S around the corner so I would probably get a few bits from there but generally just shop around in a couple of different places… my friend then stuck her nose up and said that I must think that I’m some sort of millionaire when I’m not buying food from there etc…

AIBU to think this was bitchy and totally unnecessary?

She does most her food shopping in Aldi/Lidl… I do like Aldi and would do most my shopping in there if there was one in the area where I live. I usually do most my food shopping in Tesco/Asda/Sainsburys and pick up small bits throughout the week in Waitrose because it’s the closest one to us, but would never do a full shop in there. She is not into her food… doesn’t cook nice food… just bungs whatever food into the oven most nights and prefers to spend her money on clothes etc. Whereas, for me, I don’t drink or smoke or buy clothes for myself or go out often (hardly ever), so nice food is my indulgence and something I put into our budget every month.

It really has been bugging me and playing on my mind ever since, because I really felt embarrassed afterwards the way that she turned on me.

It's not that bitchy. It's just a conversation.

KellyJonesLeatherTrousers · 17/05/2022 13:42

You’re massively overthinking this! It’s a comment a lot of people would make, YANBU to take it personally.

ivykaty44 · 17/05/2022 13:43

It’s not bitchy, but shows a degree of jealousy.

AryaStarkWolf · 17/05/2022 13:45

You're not BU unreasonable to be annoyed, it was a stupid and unnecessary comment but I'd just try to let it go really

GirlCrushxxx · 17/05/2022 13:46

Your friend 'then stuck her nose up'

What does that even mean??

10HailMarys · 17/05/2022 13:51

Sounds like a light-hearted joke in passing to me. Not bitchy. I wouldn't dwell on it.

Bunty55 · 17/05/2022 13:55

No not bitchy.. more a dig at M&S and their overpriced food which it is !

Windbeneathmybingowings · 17/05/2022 13:55

I know a few millionaires (living in London, anyone who bought a home before 1997 is probably a millionaire) - even some proper millionaires as in rich like a normal person cannot imagine, and none of them shop in M&S. Thats how people stay millionaires, they shop in Aldi! So I don’t really understand the point she was making?

Goldfishbowls · 17/05/2022 13:55

It depends on the tone. She could be having a little joke about it; or it could be jealousy and ‘who do you think you are?!’

whumpthereitis · 17/05/2022 13:57

Whether it was a joke or bitchy would depend on the tone and/or delivery, which you’d be best placed to judge.

Some people certainly can be strange about supermarket choice though, I’ve noticed.

Furrbabymama87 · 17/05/2022 14:02

If she's bitchy, then you're sneery. It reads as though she's not into food so she shops in Aldi and Lidl. As though they sell shit.

GirlCrushxxx · 17/05/2022 14:02

Yes , op, YOU sound the bitchy one!!

Seraphinesupport · 17/05/2022 14:11

i mean m&s is overpriced, ive had to use it sometimes but it is ridiculously overpriced, Also ive worked in food warehouses and a lot of the tins that we sent to places were often repackaged and then sold at double the price but are the same product.

Herejustforthisone · 17/05/2022 14:11

I’d say it was a sign of jealousy, rather than bitchiness.

This is a bit bitchy, though:

She is not into her food… doesn’t cook nice food… just bungs whatever food into the oven most nights and prefers to spend her money on clothes etc

but it’s probably understandable if you feel a bit piqued.

Justcallmebebes · 17/05/2022 14:13

I agree, you sound very sneery. She just made a joke. Can't understand why you would be upset by this?

yesthatisdrizzle · 17/05/2022 14:14

Buying some basics around the corner is going to work out cheaper than having to travel further afield to a cheaper place. It will cost you more to get there than it will save.

Just thank your lucky stars it isn't a Waitrose, or you'd never hear the end of it.😂

TimeToDecideX · 17/05/2022 14:16

Seriously! When did everyone become so sensitive to every comment in every conversation. You must be exhausted if this is how you go about life.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/05/2022 14:19

Sound like a silly joke. YABVU.

MozerellaSalad · 17/05/2022 14:31

M&S isnt a good shop for cooks
Cheap processed food with high amounts of sugar in pretty packaging
It's only good for the ready meal crowd.

When they changed from Waitrose to M&S at Ocado the calories in basic items like cook in the bag chicken shot up as M&S uses sugar to disguise poor quality.

DDivaStar · 17/05/2022 14:32

It's fairly well known m&s is expensive against most supermarkets, you're friends just being realistic.

MozerellaSalad · 17/05/2022 14:33

So if you like cooking nice food then I am afraid you wont be shopping at M&S

phishy · 17/05/2022 14:33

In my experience people who comment on what other people spend often expect that person to be generous to them.

Do you find that you treat her more to coffees, lunches, meals at your home, more than she treats you?

Not sure you should comment on what constitutes nice food if you can't spell mozzarella.

KyaClark · 17/05/2022 14:40

People actually asks questions like that?
