weekly food budget for a family of three

Realised we are probably spending far too much on food at the moment and would love to gage how everyone else is doing with it. Food prices have gone up so if you have a family of two adults and a child, what do you spend on your average weekly supermarket shop - food plus shampoos etc etc.

We spent about £100 to £120 a week, but that includes everything from food to cleaning materials, washing powder, alcohol, stuff for packed lunches for all of us. We don't eat out or have takeaways, buy food from garages etc, so this is for everything we use and eat in a week. We are also 2 adults and 1 teenager

BigMamaFratelli · 17/05/2022 10:42

About £120 a week for six people and a cat - that includes nappies and some alcohol. So I'd say £75-80 for 3?

PlanBea · 17/05/2022 10:55

We were £40-50 for two adults. Suddenly with a baby getting a tin of formula a week and with food costs increasing we now spend £70-90 😱

Twoweeksandcounting · 17/05/2022 10:59

We spend (I think) a lot as a family of three. About £120 per week, with the occasional extra bits from the co-op. That includes cleaning products, washing powder, dog treats, toiletries, etc.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/05/2022 11:05

Our shopping bill is a bit odd as DH works away most of the week. But our 'week' shop, for 2 kids, 1 adult is £40-£50. (Thats 4 dinners, 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches plus snacks). Usually Lidl. Weekend shop is £50-£60, for 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners for 2 adults 2 kids. That includes wine and beer. Usually Asda. Toiletries and cleaning sprays included in either.

Dishwasher tabs, toilet paper or washing powder can bump things up, because we buy in bulk every six weeks or so.

No pets.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/05/2022 11:07

2 adults a child and a toddler (but toddler really doesnt add much to our food bill)- between 100-120 a wk, main shop is 80 and top up is c. 20-40.

hgkl37bb · 17/05/2022 11:14

So between 100-120 is fine, right? Just doing the sums and a spreadsheet for DH

My household is 2 kids (around the age of 10) and one adult.
We spend around £70 a week. An extra £10 on weeks I need to buy washing powder/cleaning stuff/toiletries.

That's 7 breakfasts, 7 dinners, 5 lunches just for me (work from home) and 2 lunches for all of us at the weekend. Sometimes we'll go out for food which onvusoult increases our food budget for the week.

I could make it cheaper but we have a half side of salmon once a week which is £8 on it's own!

BeforeGodAndAllTheFish · 17/05/2022 11:18

*obviously

Madmog · 17/05/2022 11:23

I spend around £40 on two adults - includes cleaning and household goods and some toiletries (others I get separately when on offer in places like savers). Doesn't include alcohol or pet food. When DD is home (adult) then I guess it'll be around £55 for three.

riotlady · 17/05/2022 11:51

About £120 for us, I do tend to get quite a few convenience foods (precut veg etc) as I’m disabled and don’t always have the energy

Borisblondboufant · 17/05/2022 12:01

I spend £70 on the big shop and usually about £20 on a top up. We also have a cat and I have to buy some gluten free.

Borisblondboufant · 17/05/2022 12:01

That’s for all lunches, dinners and breakfasts btw

JustAnotherPoster00 · 17/05/2022 12:03

According to Lee Anderson MP £6.30

Zippidy123 · 17/05/2022 13:04

2 adults, 1 teenager, 2 cats and a dog. All meals eaten from home and we spent about £120 a week which seems ridiculous to me. I used to be able to do an aldi shop for £60.

Pinkflamingoseverywhere · 17/05/2022 13:26

2 adults 1 child, averages around £75-85 a week, including cleaning products / cat food etc.

Robostripes · 17/05/2022 13:28

2 adults, 1 6 year old and a cat. I budget £100 a week and usually spend most of it. Includes all food, toiletries, cleaning products, cat food - and usually alcohol too. Feels like a fairly generous budget, I don’t worry about what I’m adding to the basket.

Giraffapuses · 17/05/2022 14:06

2 adults £600 includes takeaways, cleaning etc and cat food.

Bloody Heck! I was refraining from commenting on here as we are 5 people and two dogs and I think we spend way too much. Reading that I'm feeling frugal! 😂

Giraffapuses · 17/05/2022 14:48

I know. If we were honest it's a combination of Ocado and our takeaways are actually eating out but delivered by deliveroo.

Tdcp · 17/05/2022 14:51

Ours is about £100 - £120 for 2 adults, DD and 2 cats. We all have pack lunches 5 days a week though as well.

Tdcp · 17/05/2022 14:53

I realised I used to do a shop for 4 adults for £100 a week 😐

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 17/05/2022 14:55

One adult and 2 teenagers (18 & 17) plus one cat. I spend around £60 - £70 per week on a big shop and another £10 - £30 on tops ups.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 17/05/2022 14:56

Oh and no alcohol I don't drink at all plus the DC only drink water.

Lacedwithgrace · 17/05/2022 15:11

We spend around £200, but when on a tighter budget managed around £80- usually one big shop and 1-2 top-ups of milk, fruit, etc.
£100- £120 is very normal, especially if you prefer higher end grocery shops rather than budget.
