I’m currently on mat leave with ds and have dd 5 ,but now pregnant and on medication as sick 24/7 - it’s all day and all night!
im just dragging myself through the day, it is horrendous and I’m knackered and in bed with the kids at 7:30!
I’m due back to my pt job as a nurse in June. But I am wondering about getting a sick note? however they are really short staffed and I know will be very disappointed!
I think I’d feel guilty , but I seriously wonder how I would get through the two shifts a week feeling like this!!

How many weeks will you be by the time you go back ? You should be feeling a bit better by 12 weeks.

GarlicGnocchi · 17/05/2022 07:14

See how you feel at the time.

icecreamcart · 17/05/2022 07:20

See how you feel in june, don't panic. If you're not well don't feel guilty at all. It's not your problem that they're short staffed. If the rest of the nurses are bothered and can't cope with the workload then they can take time off too. Everyone has the right.

Applegreenb · 17/05/2022 07:30

If it’s HG then you might not feel better until 20 weeks or sometimes later.

i found my HG got worse when I was tired so over doing it will make you more sick. Also the same with stress so I know it’s hard but try not to stress.

HG is a medical condition you aren’t just pregnant. It’s life threatening and isn’t taken seriously. If your sick your sick. Most definitely use your leave as needed and try not to feel guilty.

If you are still not coping on the meds you have, visit the pregnancy sickness website. They can send you all the information you need, drug ladder to try. They are truly amazing and I can not speak highly enough of them!

People can’t just take time off if the workload is too much, too many sick days becomes disciplinary and then they look at losing their job.

What's the other option if you're sick all the time? Not good being sent home and then your workforce being short staffed.

WeOnlyTalkAboutBruno · 17/05/2022 07:34

Pregnancy related sickness absence is discounted for disciplinary purposes, is it not?

Gazelda · 17/05/2022 07:35

Can you wait to see how you are nearer the time?

In the meantime, are you getting plenty of help at home? Would the baby go with a grandparent for 1 day a week while eldest is at school to give you chance to rest?

She’s not asking about being sick because the work load is high she’s asking about being sick because she is suffering with pregnancy related sickness. Separately the workload is high
also pregnancy related sickness is a protected and should be treated differently from other sickness
Your employer must record any pregnancy-related sickness absence separately from other sick leave, so that pregnancy-related sickness absence is ignored as absence and is not used to your disadvantage e.g. for disciplinary action, dismissal or redundancy.

icecreamcart · 17/05/2022 07:41

@KangarooKenny even if she takes 6 months off sick, it's not disciplinary as it's one sick incident.

This surely totally depends on your workplace sickness policy.

At my place it would meet the trigger threshold for stage 1 of the attendance management policy.

(I should have clarified, obviously not if pregnancy related!)

ohidoliketobe · 17/05/2022 07:50

@KangarooKenny You could have 100 separate incidents of sick leave due to pregnancy related issues and legally does not count towards any disciplinary action.
www.citizensadvice.org.uk/work/rights-at-work/sick-pay/getting-sick-pay-when-youre-pregnant/
Sick leave related to pregnancy issues has to be recorded separately to allow fo this.
Its not a cse of not being arsed, HG is a debilitating condition which if left untreated or not taken seriously can lead to hospitalisation and in extreme cases growth concerns with the baby. Been there. Done that. Gone the fucking scars from numerous cannula for drips to prove it
OP, highly recommended Pregnancy Sickness website as per PP recommendation, there's also a HG support thread on here under the pregnancy section. Be gentle with yourself

AngelinaFangelina · 17/05/2022 07:52

Well if you are being sick constantly throughout the day and the medication isn't helping then you really can't go back can you, it would be impossible. I'd rather have someone signed off sick than at work but in the toilet the entire day and being unable to carry out any work and feeling dreadful.
See how you are feeling in June, hopefully it may have eased somewhat. Good luck!

Lazypuppy · 17/05/2022 07:55

See how you feel closer to thr time, and also just consider whether it will affect your SMP if you don't get full sick pay and it falls during your qualifying weeks

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 17/05/2022 07:56

What plans do you have in place for childcare when you go back to work?
Will you be financially able to manage if you still have to pay for that childcare while on sick leave?
Are you entitled to sick pay?
Is the medication from the doctors making any improvement?
If not have you been back for a different prescription?
Would it affect maternity pay for your current pregnancy, I think there's some rule about maternity pay being calculated based on your average pay during a certain period of your pregnancy and if you are on sick pay during that period it could reduce?

If you are too Ill to work then you can't work, but make sure you've considered everything.

Sorry if this is just a wall of text MN takes away paragraphs when using the app.

Av0bo55 · 17/05/2022 16:23

yes I will be and I had hg until 18 weeks last time
im due back to work when I’ll be 14 weeks

I guess I’m panicking about it ,but will just have to see how I feel nearer the time!
